    About Us.
    I share our organic homestead, called Byther Farm, with my loving partner, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
    We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Monmouthshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
    We keep hybrid chickens and also have breeding flocks of Jersey Giants and Australorp chickens and Aylesbury ducks. There is a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
    I'm currently exploring permaculture farming as a way of life.

    My Aunt got diagnose d with Hashimoto when she was in her 40s. She was addicted to sugar and would eat a can of sweetened condensed milk at a time lol - legend. Her baking was amazing. Brownies to die for. She nearly died from this before they found the problem. She died last year at age 93! This thing can be overcome for sure.

    You still make me smile even when you feel like poo! Hope your getting on well now and look forward to the new batch of duck eggs. That’s the one critter I’ve yet to raise. Those and goats. I may try ducks for the slug control in the garden and for harvesting for meat but not sure I will go for the goats. Hahah.

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ducks are great for slug and snail control as long as you can keep them off your plants, because they will control those too! Our first girl was particularly partial to the young growth of onions. Two years in a row she managed to get into the veg garden and eat all the onion tops. She is no longer with us (she broke her hip in December) and I will miss the jovial frustration of Mrs Warne eating the onions again. We don't want goats here, mainly because we don't have the infrastructure for them, but also I'm not sure what we'd do with them. I'd rather have sheep to keep the grass down as I like lamb, hogget and mutton.

    Hope you feel better soon & good for you deciding to do some seeding. You can always try to place a bit of chicken wire on top of the tray to keep the cats off o.- My cat enjoyed laying in my window boxes...and pooping in my compost garden beds too... lol I feel as though either I plant roses with thorns in those boxes... or put an uncomfortable barrier around :)

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The chicken wire over the top is exactly what I did! Then I firmly shut the door because the cold weather was coming. Monty is not very impressed with this, but as soon as it's warmer the door can be opened and I'll need the chicken wire covering.

    👍 I have hashi's too and honestly didn't know the icky painful spells was related to hashi's. I drink green tea w/turmeric, ginger, honey and coconut oil (originally for goiter, that did get better) and thankfully the painful days/spells are far and few between.

    Liz, I'm so sorry at your comment about not wanting get well's or prayers or kind sentiment from your viewers. As we are a world away (many of us) and you wouldn't want us on your doorstep in any case...our words and affection and cyber hugs and love is all we can give. And it is I dare say a valuable thing in that it shows that you are held in high esteem. I imagine that your comment is triggered by the fact that you are one of those people who goes into a cave (figuratively speaking of course) to heal. Don't let this desire make you block people out. I'm just stubborn enough to send you love and good wishes inspite of what you said! And I'm so so happy that you got seeds planted! That's a good medicine on any day! Cyber hugs for one of my favorite TH-camrs!

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dolly, my main reasons for not wanting them is that I am trying hard to not acknowledge too much how I feel and that it's only a couple of weeks ago that I received lots and lots of well wishes about the cold that I had. I am certainly not shutting people out, but I do find it slightly embarrassing to be poorly again so soon after the cold. Thank you for the love, good wishes and cyber hugs, they are enjoyed and much appreciated.

    Hoping for a speedy recovery Liz!! I suffered with a thyroid condition called Graves disease as well! It can be very disruptive to deal with! Much Love! ❤

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi April, I think Graves is the opposite side of the spectrum to hypothyroidism, where your thyroid is over active (is that right?), I gather it's almost more of a problem than being underactive. Are you on meds? Is it under control?

    • @aprilsutterfield3635
      @aprilsutterfield3635 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Liz Zorab - Byther Farm Yes, you're right Liz. Graves is over production of the thyroid. It has several symptoms including palpitations, lots of energy, sweats, irritability and others. Those are the symptoms I had. I had an operation to remove 80% of my thyroid gland at 26. It's kept my disease under control for 20 years, although I am starting to have issues again. My thyroid gland continued to regrow and currently i have large goiters pressing on my esophagus.

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well that's no fun April! Will the docs be able to sort the goiters?

    • @aprilsutterfield3635
      @aprilsutterfield3635 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Liz Zorab - Byther Farm Well, that's the sticky part. I have no health insurance. So until the goiters cause issues with my breathing I have to endure them. It has to be a life or death situation before they'll operate. Give thanks for the National Health! They may have issues but y'all are luckier than American's by a mile!

  • @kirstenwhitworth8079

    Oh, I am *_so_* very sorry you are going through this.
    I, too, have\had Hashimoto's. It went undiagnosed for at least 18 years, and turned into goiter. My thyroid was removed about a decade ago, and it's been a nightmare ever since. I just got a new doctor who cut my thyroid hormones by 1/3 in December; now I am ballooning up, gaining weight, lack energy, can't catch my breath, and feel just awful. They never test all the hormone levels, just TSH. Life is miserable at the moment.
    However, you have inspired me to make an appointment for next Monday with my doctor. Thank you for that.
    My peas are coming up, but none of the lettuces or other cold hardy seeds I planted in January have - but I haven't planted anything since. I need to get cracking.

    Sorry you aren't well. I definitely understand. I have fibromyalgia and people thing I'm crazy when I tell them my hair hurts. Isn't it odd what can hurt when you have a chronic pain condition? Also I saw that you're in Monmouthshire!!! How cool. We'll be retiring in the valleys below Brecon Beakons so I'm excited to see gardening in the area I'll be in! Though I won't be homesteading, I still hope to have a nice back garden where I can have at least a kitchen garden along with room for my pups. Love to you from south Texas US (for now).

      I know! I'm so excited. We have 4 years as his daughter wants to finish school here and go to uni in Wales. I really think the cooler weather and the food quality (here in the US they allow so many chemicals to go into our food and organic is double and triple the cost of conventional) will really help with my fibro. I'm so ready to go. Texas is lovely but it's HOT!

    Got some rubbish of my own that wipes me out. I find veg gardening very therapeutic. Bit further north than you but need to get cabbage kale sprouts in after next cold snap due this weekend. Sounds like the right decision about the eggs.

    My heart to yours.
    I crashed yesterday after a beautiful week of travel for a son's wedding, getting married ourselves, and getting some chicks for our flock, as well as the not so wonderful time of falling and breaking my elbow!
    Baby steps are still momentum!
    I'll be *slowly and carefully* planting for a couple of days until the rain comes.
    Be well, my friend!

    • @mikaylastrong7622

      Just got 2 leghorns and 2 black sex links. Last year my daughter gave me 6 hatching eggs, 3 of which developed. Then I incubated 4 more, 2 of which gave me chicks.
      Unfortunately, I got 4 roos and 1 hen. Lol.
      The 2 big boys are going to freezer camp, and one of the smaller will join them soon.
      The chicks are all pullets (I hope!), so EGGS!
      I'm slowly growing my flock, and have nearly convinced Mr. B that we need a meat flock.
      The elbow is not a bad break, and my lupus made is swell long enough to set it quickly, so no cast.
      Thank you for the congrats!

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I will leave it where it is, I think picking it off would take way too much time and it will just become incorporated into the soil in the raised beds.

    Sorry you aren't feeling well and happy you got your seeds planted. My 16 yo daughter was diagnosed with Hashimoto's back in August and we still can not get her meds right. My husband, one son and other daughter all have it as well but it seems well controlled with their meds, but for some reason my 16 yo is really struggling. She definitely got hit the youngest and the hardest with it. One reason why I want to start gardening is that I want cleaner food. I so suspect modern food is messing with our health in so many ways. Right now my daughter is on a gluten, diary and soy free diet. It is really hard and doesn't help with her depression that whenever she goes out with her friends she can't eat pizza or what have you with them. For 16 yo old girls, hanging out with your friends is so important! Anyway, this is just to say that I understand how tough Hashimoto's can be!

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Faith, it took about 2 and half years for my meds to get sorted to a stable level (and that was in December - just 3 months ago). Sorry to read that your daughter is having a tough time with it, hashimoto's can be a stinker!

      Faith R - there is a pizza crust made with oil, baking powder & ground quinoa or buckwheat. Oh pinch of salt. She can make it at home & have her friends over. It can be made light & chewy with wait time 15 minutes before baking & crunchy crust if put in oven immediately.

      Hello Tracy and welcome, I do take painkillers but I tend to wait throughout the day and take ibuprofen or paracetamol before I go to bed (because pain always seems to be worse at night). • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an autoimmune condition that attacks the thyroid in particular and gives each person with it a different set of symptoms, but they usually include brain fog, fatigue, pain, cramps, hair loss, cold intolerance, heat intolerance, tiredness, depression.... the list goes on and on.
