I wish I could see you two in each others vlogs more. Great chemistry, but I get so much perspective from each you individually. When you're together, it's even better.

I took a couple of linguistics classes in university and it reinforced the "music is a language" analogy. It definitely has to do with immersion at a young age - after the age of 7 it becomes more difficult to learn a new language.
I always compare studying jazz to learning a second language - at first, you do have to learn grammar, syntax & vocabulary; but the real mark of being fluent in the language is when you are not translating from one language to the other but thinking natively in it.
    Great hang captured on video!

Bob is the man! These two together result in some educational gold. Really would love to see the Bob Reynolds band play over in the UK!

I'd love to see the Bob Reynolds Band ~same personnel, with Shaun & Ruslan~ as at Baked P., play the Kimmel show here in the US...under the political blurb or banner-line, of "Jazz [or maybe, Fusion...] Is Good For You".
      Or some such.

I just love Bob! I had the great honor to talk to him for an hour after the Puppy's show in Bologna early this year. He was so humble, down to earth and honestly caring about our conversation. We also chatted about you, Janek! I think you two make the perfect musicians/teachers/great humans duo. Hope to meet you in person one day, maybe have a little jam! take care!

Very nice comment [in a sea of, well...shall we say not all the best all the time]. Was bowled over that Bob rmbr'd my name, not all that common {Dion}, as we were leaving...at the Baked Potato in Los Angeles few weeks back. The introduction had been quite before the show. I got the same warm, humble, friendly vibe you mentioned...is what I go out of my way to spread around everywhere I go.
      So, much noted and appreciated.

IDEA; Janek and Bob live stream Q&A with intruments for demonstration purposes. Things like showing us theoretical concepts over two different grooves... Live!

More of this please!!! I probably would fall in the camp of asking (myself) complex theory questions too often. It seems important to remember that pros like you and Bob are thinking about the feel of certain intervals over specific chords (which have specific names and belong to specific modes and scales. But all of that gets processed and internaslized, i.e. the theory doesn't need to be recalled mid solo). I would love more content with insight like the minor chord 9 thing. Kinda like a shortcut to finding/ describing/ playing what we love about our favorite music

Was thinking about Kirk Whalum and his emphasis of the 9th as Bob was speaking and then he brought up Kirk!!! Kirk's playing was a great way to reverse engineer or deconstruct my way of playing. Really great clip watching the two of you speak. Need a longer version!

With regard to the E min pentatonic stretching across Emin and Fmaj7.
I know shorthand is the name of the game for swiftness sake, so that point is not lost on me, but if you'll indulge me. Isn't E min pentatonic ultimately just touching on the notes of F Lydian which is the actual, long form, template for the IV chord which is what the Fmaj7 represents In this example (iii-IV ) Are we missing the forest for the trees?

Started playing Trumpet at 9 then bass at 13. I'm 36 now and don't think about scales at all when I'm playing. I use scales to warm up but I honestly feel like if you are thinking about scales when you're writing music it's probably going to end up sound like you're playing scales.

Great camaraderie and sympatico re the philosophy...and the well-taken knowledge from experience, delivered. [Conversation~ about conversationality. Some good examples, metaphors!]. Friendly, and just down to earth, while drilling down quite insightfully.
Should be nominated for a "Tubie" [just watched the Emmys tonight sorry...], in
    the 'Fun-In-vLogs' category.
On the In-and-OUT Janek, go for it. Wife Sue & I are trudging the road to perfecting the physical part of existence and immortality as much as probable, but we lo-v-v-e IN-and-OUT. The last great American Burger. And as a videographer friend used to say..."Hey, 'ya gotta ingest some fast food every once in awhile, case you should get caught somewhere where that's all that's available...your body won't reject it and die on you!"
Now…the brain...basically a pattern-recognition machine and control surface for life
support activities, [Some other time maybe we can talk abt 'who's' controlling the control surface] but there's so much more in play than that.
Take playing Bob's exceptional tune Rise And Fall...
No way can a brain by itself work fast enough to make all those calculations and decisions, let alone split-second mind-ear-fingers co-ordination...then thematically collate the billions of connections, finally, plugging all of this into heart and soul at the cosmic level such that it can [--optimally] move a being to tears, awe, longing...all those diverse emotions.
Straightwire communication. Divine Carrier Transmission~ in some circles it's called "duplication". I don't 'intellect' you...hopefully I 'feel' you. I am [for just a moment]...you.
There is a brain required in the loop, yes, but only as a switchboard ; there's much more going on...the so-called [infinite!] data warehouse --all the knowledge of the Sages Of The Ages might just come pouring in at the exact moment needed thru a 6th or higher, dimension. And we get to ride along. As both delivery personnel ^and^ witness/participant.
    Unbelievably cool.
Just try to "cause" THAT to happen by force, by bearing down.
Which is why I'm so happy that both of you hold, share and walk/talk the 'letting go of thinking' premise --at least when it comes time to make music. Good for balancing your checkbook and so on, but ought we let it run the whole show? I don't think so and neither do those Sages, if one is paying attention.
About being obsessed with theory. One of my mentors some years ago often pointed out that what he called 'perennial students' [my term is knowledge stockpilers...] keep voraciously packing it in and in so doing become marvelously equipped.
For a world that no longer exists.
Haha, I remember my first important big chord discovery --not a Gm9, but an augmented5.
I stuck it in everywhere I could find a hole for it.
    Wonderful tag-team-talk guys, wonderful vid.
    Luv'n'Cheers, Dion

Hello ketchup drinkers. In re-reading thru this chaltroll ~really good stuff folks, btw!~ I re-read my own comment [bet I'm not the only one on the planet who does that] and it just popped that there IS a short-er form for all that wonderful wordification abv ^ ^ :
      'The paralysis...of analysis'. Just sayin'.
The 'Motormind' is, in the overarching view, is what's killing us as to rapid progress across the boards.
