They've made the impossible, possible. Whoever had the idea of having BB-8's design into a hamster ball type droid and making it real instead of CGI. I'm giving them so many kudos for this amazing idea.
+Azizi Artair Do you even know how a design of a character starts out, I'll tell you ,most of the time with simple frikkin' recognizable shapes...... so yeah, I hope that you were being sarcastic like lego kid asked you.
I was there as this happened. You'll notice a cheer coming from the crowd which quiets down quickly, it wasn't us quieting down for the panel so much as it was thousands of people just standing there in utter awe of what we were seeing in front of us. Something we had all written off as being CG was rolling around the stage right in front of us. It was as if the entire room had been stunned and we were all unable to put into words what we were seeing with our own eyes.
THIS is what Hollywood's been missing, not just Star Wars! That genuine sense of "How the hell did they do that?" It's too easy to make it CG, so I'm glad JJ and team went with the practical approach. It just makes BB8 even cooler!
Oh my god, BB-8 is too cute... I can't. I want to hug it so bad. EDIT: omg my comment is literally 4 years old and I totally forgot about it until I got a notification now. Great times
The trailer was great, but the reveal of a physical, practical BB-8 was one of the best reveals of this panel. (Along with see Tony, Mark, Carrie and Peter on stage together again)
This is what filmmaking is all about to me, pushing the boundaries of what's possible and coming up with new and creative ways to cast an illusion. I literally shuttered when I heard him talk about their initial plans to make a CGI BB-8, and how disastrous that would've been, you don't have to try and convince me that that thing is really there because it IS actually fucking there. When you make your audience question how you did that, when they genuinely can't see the strings, that's when you've accomplished something.
+100percentgamer At the same time CGI is one of those film making effects that actually is pushing the boundaries of what we can do. Film makers have been pushing special effects since the beginning of film with masking and chroma-key. I think it isn't the effect that is the issue, but understanding how to use it effectively and knowing its own boundaries, strengths, and weaknesses.
When I saw the first trailer I thought, "This new ball-based robot is so obviously fake and CGI, it's not even believable as science fiction." Now they show the robot is goddamn real? What kind of evil magic has Disney concocted for this amazing feat?
***** My understanding is BB-8 is two robots, the head and the body. This is all guesswork, but I assume the body has a gyroscope system for mobility, and the head has a gyro-orientation sensor and wheels for maintaining balance on the top of the body. For the more advanced actions, I think they use CGI and practical tricks to get BB-8 to perform some of the more acrobatic moves that the physical prop isn't quite capable of.
I freaked out when I saw this, because when I saw the first teaser for the movie, I thought BB-8 was CG. And then seeing it being a real, tangible robot? Give that whole robotics team an Oscar.
+ILikeWafflz Watch a TH-camr by the name of James Bruton. He has 2 series where he is trying to recreate a working BB8 replica. He also goes quite in depth showing every step in making it. He has a mark 1 model and a newer mark 2 that is actually extremely impressive.
This was a good way to introduced BB 8. I remember everyone thinking the droid was stupid and unbelievable and then the reveal an actual working version of the droid live on stage. It's what sold me on the droid way back then.
I still get chills watching this a year later. This is what being creative and original is all about, and yes, I know now that this is from Abrams looking back at the late Ralph Mcquarrie ( RIP) designs.
I remember a few years ago, they sold small R2-D2 toys that reacted to what you said. I get the feeling that remote controlled toys of BB-8 are going to become something of a kid's dream. R2's still the king of droids but he's got a contender in BB-8.
Lucas The Hutt would be like: "REAL SETS!?" "REAL ROBOTS!?" "I would have done the sit in a chair, drink my coffee and let animators do the work technique." Jar Jar is a key all this.
***** I'll always look at Jar Jar as a lost opportunity. He could've been the Chewbacca of the Prequels. Just give him a more aquatic sounding voice, does not speak English, and when he talks there are no subtitles so you can only guess to what he's saying exactly by the reaction of the other actors. Also he's not clumsy granted he's not a badass either and he's fascinated by mechanical things hence the reason he's on the surface during the invasion of Naboo.
***** "Jar Jar is the key to all this" I fucken remember in the doco when Lucas says that. Instant failure alright. These new practical and real droids/armor/sets is the real key, CGI has its place but Lucas pretty much made CGI 90% of his films
The way I'm picturing this working is the ball is moved by internal reaction wheels and the head unit is a separate piece that cleaves to the body with magnets.
+Lundarigirl maybe that's what BB8 tells R2: "I came to take your place in the spotlight, you glorified trash can! Your time is up, has been! You just wait and see. They'll love me."
BB-8 was fantastic. When I was watching _Awakens,_ I thought, Okay, this is too fluid and expressive for a practical effect, but it has the physical look of a practical effect. I'm looking at BB-8 right now and I still don't understand how it works. Ingenious. If you can make something the camera can film and that interacts with its physical environment, it's almost always better to do it.
Love this little droid already. And I do believe they're genuinely creating this film with passion and love. I'm all too sick of the pessimistic critters who like to judge the movies before they've even been released. I'm looking forward to seeing this in the cinema. I'll try to keep my expectations low - although that's hard at this point - and just enjoy whatever there is to be enjoyed about it. Nothing is certain, but I do believe they're doing their best. For this and (presumably) all future Star Wars films, we'll have directors at the helm who started out as fans themselves. That should be reason enough to believe they love the opportunity given to them to direct a Star Wars film and that they will want to get the best out of it. But we'll see... I'm just hoping for the pessimists to be silenced by the results.
I don't know why she credited Bob as the guy who made BB-8 work on its own. Sure, he found the company that built it, but thank the genius engineers for bringing it to life!
"Discover the technology of what you're seeing right now." 1:52 such beautiful words. How often do a group of people "discovery" technology. Gotta love it!
The looks on the faces in the audience when that little droid rolled out must have been sooo worth all the other s*** the filmmakers have to deal with when making these films. For a world fatigued with being force-fed a steady diet of green screens and motion capture dots, we all simply assumed BB-8 was CG. If only because it was the first thing that had truly gagged the fanboys since "Return of the Jedi," this really was a magical moment.
***** Nope... no more than Darth Vader has competition. R2 D2 is Star Wars... the whole point was that he would be pivotal in every episode without seeming to be... and yet for this one some genius exec thought " lets make a new droid... the kids will love it " He does nothing that R2 D2 didn't already do.
***** They've created a problem for themselves... they've tried to replace R2 D2... but they can't do that. So now they have 3 droids that they have to get into every movie
+folsdaman actually, not really. When the inside body rolls, the magnets rotate with the body, and the body rotates with the magnet. I watched someone build one, and the only tough part about it is preventing it from wobbling (since electronic gyros are too slow for its huge size and mechanical gyros are much to small again, for its size) I believe the source of the video, if your want it, is wired.
I'm just applauding the fact that engineered puppetry arts are coming back. Would have been so easy to settle for CGI but they took it above and beyond. AWESOME and I mean AWESOME job guys! This just confirmed my attendance at release night.
i'm real glad they took the time to research and find out if its possible to make this practical and put it to use. They're obviously learning from experience that, that an all CG movie will be a flop and anger many fans, don't want another Episode 2: Attack on Green Screen again. Super happy with this. Also the toys are pretty good too, the one from Sphero, which is like 120 or 150, can't remember, is real small but works really well. Can't wait to see this movie, gonna be a great December.
Everyone hating on George Lucas for his CGI seem to forget he did the originals too. Sure, I prefer practical effects over CGI, but give him a break for crying out loud. We wouldn't have Star Wars without him.
Why are BB-8's beeps 'n' boops different here than in the final movie? His sound effects in the final movie are more pronounced and less advanced sounding. Feeling really nit picky here. I just got really exited with his little droid laughs and everything he seemed like such a spunky little bot but in the movie he's just like R2. Which I'm cool with, either way I'm cool. I just noticed it and went 'Hey'.
They've made the impossible, possible. Whoever had the idea of having BB-8's design into a hamster ball type droid and making it real instead of CGI. I'm giving them so many kudos for this amazing idea.
John Smith If that's true, they need to be commended. This is bloody witchcraft. Sorcery that's what it is.

Such an amazing design. Coolest new star wars robot.
12coco100 Thanks it's my face ^u^
Captain Obvious CG's are dumb. We have the technology to replicate all droids now. Not the intelligence but the skeletal and moving parts at least.
Now you are Captain Obvious. Ha.

*says droids have no gender. Calls it a he*
....
Regardless, I watched the movie last night, and it turns out it is confirmed to be a he anyway .-.
+Dylan Lyons (ZeroJab) No because English people call living things with no gender "He" :D
Consider me impressed! The fact that they made the effort to make this droid work and have something for the actors to work with is great. Huge props!

Nope. Although I keep thinking, "Did J.J Abrams base him off WALL-E?"
Yeah maybe he did

Inside the sphere is a weighted magnetic thing that stays upright, the magnet keeps the head on top. Wheels attached to the magnet make the ball roll.
+Owldude000 it's is actually more than that due to the fact that the head can move
independently... It's way more complicated than most people think.
+Abelhawk magnets, how do they work
+Abelhawk Gyro, Magnets and Wheels. It's actually not as magical as one might imagine.
This IS the droid I'm looking for :)
Love the sequels or hate them (jk everyone hates them)...
But still, BB-8 is the coolest idea ever ngl
I'm just applauding the fact that engineered puppetry arts are coming back. Would have been so easy to settle for CGI but they took it above and beyond. AWESOME and I mean AWESOME job guys! This just confirmed my attendance at release night.
BB-8 makes me sooo happy!! I just love this new member of the Star Wars family. Roll on December!!!!
Am I the only one who likes the sound for BB-8?
Magnets...polarizing depolarizing ...shit I don't know.
Awesome!
Kristi Brown hell yeah..crazy
SI FI
Magnets, how do they work?
I think this is sorcery myself, disney has clearly delved too deep in to the blood arts :/

SI FI Magnets were my initial guess as well - I can't wait to find out how they did do it; so fascinating.
bb8 is hands down the best character in the trilogy
Why don't you just shut up
Pulkit Dahiya shut up, i will not
Rip R2
The way it fidgets around, looking back and forth at the audience is so adorable
i'm real glad they took the time to research and find out if its possible to make this practical and put it to use.
+Ben Ray
This is from almost a whole year before the movie actually aired. It was still in the process of editing.
Right you are. I just thought it was weird. I love Bb8 as a character and loved the film!
+Ben Ray I heard him say his name in the form of whistles a few times within the movie
+Ben Ray he faked his accent in the film, just like Boyega. so here you're hearing his normal voice.
+MobiusBandwidth I agree. I prefer this voice better.
i know it might sounds strange but i really wish that bb8 would be real, and be my companion!!! he seems like a friend for life^^
Video at 0:52 says it all. look at all their jaws hanging wide open. Its just amazing they used a real robot instead of CGI.
Looking back and realising R2 and BB8 got more screentime here together than they did in the movie
