If Marty Friedman Played METALLICA'S Lux Æterna

  • What would it sound like If Marty Friedman Played METALLICA'S Lux Æterna? Lord Bradley Hall recently redid the solo from Metallica's new track, saying he was "underwhelmed" with the original. As I listened, it felt like Bradley was channeling the POWER of Lord Marty Friedman of MEGADETH. Exotic/Erotic scales, dynamics and level 666 creativity. The question is, what's the secret to becoming a LEAD LORD? I deconstruct Bradley's take on Kirk Hammett's catastrophe and breakdown the Phrygian Dominant scale he's using. Middle eastern and far east scales are a staple aspect of Marty Friedman's style and sound. Learn more about these unique note choices in my FREE course BELOW muhahaha!

Hammet’s solo sound like Hammet, the same thing he’s been doing forever, but then again, it’s instantly recognizable. That ‘new’ solo had some nice elements but not all sections fitted together. Sounded like an exercise instead of a solo…

    • @mylesbell8281

I agree 100%. It just sounds like a bunch of random sweep exercises that aren't really connected very well. I feel like it would have been much better if he just stuck to minor pentatonic with some slight deviation. I think it would also have been better if he had made clear sections to his solo instead of just busting all over the fretboard randomly 😂

I don't mind Kirk not using a lot of scales in his solos, but god damn, the solo from this song doesn't tell you anything, it's all over the place... The first half was amazing, ngl, he was connecting the guitar licks pretty good, but then, was all messy, not a messy stuff you could listen and still like it, but a really annoying messy stuff.
Can't believe how Kirk did amazing solos before and now that he has more musical knowledge and experience, can't make a solo sound like is connected.

The minute I heard that solo redone, my mind went to Friedman. Whenever I say " exotic" , I'm usually describing Marty. Now that said, let's give a shout out to lord Schenker for his subtle use of these scales as well. Listen for them, they are plastered all over his music. Time for you to open the vault on his playing and scales.

    • @cocobot90

Ironically Kirk has mentioned Schenker a bunch of times in interviews as one of the guys that fascinated and influenced him early on. (Although the "influence" part refers more to the fact that UFO, along with the Scorpions, apparently made him interested in exploring a heavier sound).

In my humble opinion, when it comes to art, it's all about the creator's feelings at the time of creating their work. It's not about pleasing people but demonstrating the creator's feelings at that moment. If pleasing people was the case, then people would go out of their minds and say "This is a commercial work. They go out of their way to keep their audience entertained, etc.". I'm not defending Kirk's solo on this song nor do I blame him. This actually reminded me of one of Dave Mustaine's interviews that I quoted below.
"Speaking of lead guitar, Dave, what’s your approach to soloing as a player and as a writer/producer?
Mustaine: When you live, breathe, and feel the song that you’re writing, the song pretty much tells you what it needs. I’m not a believer that a solo has to be shredding with a wang bar, though I think a lot of people do some really great work with that. I’m of the belief that a player like David Gilmour could do more with one note than some of today’s shredders can do with a dozen. On some of these solos that are ripping fast, you just hear rrrrrrrrrr. It’s like, “Man, come on!”"

Kirk Hammett is one of the most proficient Phrygian/Phrygian Dominant users in metal music. He was one of the guys who introduced them since they were considered flamenco scales earlier. Solos like the thing that should not be, blackened, and wherever I may roam use it. The reason modern Metallica solos are so pentatonic based is because they're improvised. Kirk was always a pentatonic player, but he mixed natural minor, dorian, major, and phrygian, so it was more creative.

Pentatonic scales is good sounding and a very powerful scale, using it doesnt mean youre are technically poor, its just a mode that a musician chose to develop and improve. The fact that Metallica still lives until today with so many followers and very high album sales. Metallca as a band captured the hearts of millions, maybe the lead part may not sound appealing to you, as a whole, the band created tons of songs that are undeniably good that many can relate and appreciate.

  • @JoJoRock197

Pretty sure Wherever I May Roam was entirely in phrygian dominant, including and especially the solo.
In Lux Aeterna, Kirk recorded an improvised solo that he thought matched the vibe and feel of the song. Music is feel first, complexity last,. If you want to write a good song, you leave your ego outside and keep it simple stupid.
If Kirk wanted to write another Creeping Death solo, or another God that Failed solo he would have; he just chose not to. So let's not forget that.

Back in the day we had punk and metal to get away from this elitist, white collar nonsense and it acted as a big middle finger to them. Now a days we are no different. It started with the late 80s virtuoso movement, then grunge was the new middle finger, then the internet came and we have a new wave of metal scholars talking about modes and stuff actual great metal bands never cared about.
