      100% true.
After playing Metallica for months, Rust In Peace in general was hard, but ok to learn. But, when we talk about Dave heroin days, I just can't learn a LOT of Killing/Peace Sells/SFSGSW riffs. Always there're a "easy" song in the album like, Mechanix, Peace Sells, In My Darkest Hour, but Dave almost lead in rhythms, it's crazy. Black Friday and Wake Up Dead after the spider chord is just impossible for me.
I still struggle in some Justice riffs, but if I put the time that I'd needed to learn Holy Wars, for sure I would have already got the entire Justice mastered. And I still can't do 100% Rust In Peace. That's my experience playing these wonderful bands.

@@1otherside to play mechanix at the same tempo, as clear and do it the entire song through, requires serious rhythm and endurance skills. It’s insanely fast, yes far simpler than a lot of the other songs I agree. But still incredibly difficult to match the record, however like you say, the other songs from that first lineup period and sfsgsw are just mind blowing when breaking them down to try and learn. Dave really is the thrash metal riff god.

Muscle memory. Same with yngwie, bc a guy that old normally shouldn't be able to shred like that😅
And of course technical efficiency plays a huge role. Kiko is the perfect example, he puts as little strain as possible on himself, hence why he doesn't regress technically. Of course he will naturally get slower, he won't be able to shred like 20 when he's 80, but he sure as will be the best 80 year old in the world😂

Chris Poland was perfect for Megadeths early thrash days in the 80's, but Marty basically gave them their most iconic sounds like Rust in Peace and Countdown, Kiko is very good with coming up with solos and replicating Marty's/Chris's play style. So in a way they are amazing in their own ways.

Not necessarily. For me, I ventured far into heavier music in my late teens to mid 20s and now Im tired of complexity and a lot of it just for complexity’s sake. I find now that a hardhitting and well written song is just better. Its harder still, to do both complex and well written at the same time. Both metallica and megadeth have accomplished this.

Nothing against Metallica. They have a lot of good stuff, James is a great song writer. Even load, reload etc have good moments. It's the uninspiring part why people call them too simpler or boring. And a lot of this is due to Lars.

I appreciate both. Particularly pre-Black album Metallica. Dave wanted Megadeth to be Bigger, Louder, and Faster. And 2 out of 3 Ain't bad.
My biggest problem with Metallica is, and always will be Bro-Dude James stage presence, and Lars. Nothing specific about Lars, just Lars. He bugs the everloving crap out of me.
And just before somebody jumps in and decides that I'm just picking on Lars, Dave is no angel. Far from it. Some of the stuff he's said in interviews and whatnot over the years, I flat out can't defend. But I can separate Dave the guy, from Dave the Songwriter/Singer/Guitarist.
Megadeth has had some fantastic lead guitar players, and I constantly see this debate about "Who's the best guitarist Megadeth has had" and it's a silly question. Dave is the best guitarist Megadeth has had. A) He was the Lead in Metallica, prior to the split, B) Watch the interviews, not just with Dave, but with Kiki, Marty, Chris (Poland/Broderick) does anybody here really think that he had no input into the lead parts, and/or can't play them himself?
And yes, I will gladly take the Man behind the kit banging on the skins in Megadeth over Lars. I don't care which one, they've all been better.
I don't hate Metallica, I don't think Dave is some kind of god, or that there was ever really a fight. Whatever it is that makes music appeal to one person, and not to another, Megadeth does a better job of making me *feel* something, overall. So they get the nod.

Recorded Megadeth are probably better, they certainly create more complex music and have had more talented musicians in the band. Live there's no competition; Metallica destroy Megadeth. I find Megadeth a little boring to watch live and Dave's voice doesn't hold up well (seen both bands live many times over the last 30+ years). All that being said I still think MoP is the most important metal album ever and Metallica probably hold more places in my top 20 songs than Megadeth do. Marty is probably the most important guitarist Megadeth ever had and, honestly, if you look at his body of work he's done far more than any other guitarist Megadeth ever has, even teaching the legendary Jason Becker as a teenager. I believe Dave has said in interviews that Marty's playing encouraged him to become better, more exploratory and cleaner as a lead guitarist which I think shows over albums after RIP.

I agree. Megadeth made more albums while Metallica went on 3 year long world tours. Megadeth is cool to see live as its insane to see them flex those solos, but once you've seen them, you've seen them. Metallica is a monster live and sell out everywhere they go. Ive seen megadeth play 4k seat concert hall before, and play for half filled amphitheaters. But I loved megadeth putting out albums virtually every two years, seemed every time you turned around they were dropping something new. Mad respect to metallica, its great they sold out all those shows, but I prefer megadeth's vast library.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. No doubt Megadeth have always had the superior musicians when it comes to skills and mastery. Metallica have always emphasised more melody and emotion with their song writing, and live, yup, as a live unit they've always been superior at that. James has a superior voice too. With all that said however they are brother bands; one brother is the ginger, more complex one, the other the more commercially accessible, melodic brother.

I love them both but since load Metallica lost their edge in just my opinion and my music taste changed as I explored more bands. The key to Metallica's success is they evolved their sound to be more accessible and it paid off. Dave tried accessible with some degrees of success. Risk and super collider were failures to capture a different audience but they evolved the band's sound in my opinion. It's all good music to different ears and metal would be a different place without them both 🤘

Best Megadeth guitarist: I really like Kiko and I love following his behind the scenes videos. He really knows how to connect with the audience. I love his work on the Dystopia album and the constant soloing; that gets my heart pumping. However, there is a grittiness and command over the music that Marty has. I love the sounds/effects that Marty provides. The music sounds like it was born with him (of course he did write many of the solos).

Ive always had more of a connection to Metallica's music. It just makes me feel more, gets me going more. But from a guitar-players point of view it is more rewarding getting a Megadeth riff or solo dead on. Dave's solo have very little story to tell or feeling while Kirk's solo's you can sing along to and really fit the song. Marty on the other hand has the best style of soloing in my ears to this day. Other then that James just has the best metal voice and lyrics ever. Dave's voice takes some getting used to and wont click with you after one listen. I mean just look at the sales and you know who is the better band, their music is just reaching out and grabbing new fans every day while with Megadeth it takes a while. But i would say every fan that loves Metallica will almost certainly also love Megadeth. ( just wont buy the albums hehe).

    • @choronzon69
      @choronzon69 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

More sales doesn't qualify as the better band, what criteria are you measuring "better" here? The Beatles have sold more than Metallica, but I wouldn't say it's due to the Beatles being a better band. Metallica sold more than Megadeth because they were more melodic, catchier, anthemic and accessible. They also developed a large following in the underground before breaking into the mainstream years earlier than Megadeth did. James' better vocals played a huge part in that as well. Megadeth have *some* melodic songs however overall they're more technical and aggressive, and Dave's vocals are snottier and thus not as accessible. In fact they're polarising. 😂 They're distinctive and suit Megadeth but they're simply not as strong as James'.

As long as the actual music is full of talent, passion, and innovation; there is no better band. It’s just preference at that point. What I did was play it over and over, to the album version without singing a word, so I could play the riffs in my sleep ya know? Only then, when the vocals AND riffs were seared in my head, from listening and playing it over and over did I try singing over the top. 🤘

To be frank, Dave has more overall technical talent. Just a statement of fact. But Metallica has better music. Period. Megadeth has nothing in their catalog that makes me headbang like Battery or Harvester of Sorrow. No metal group has more relatable and more sing along songs than Metallica. I’ve never minded or cared that Dave was the technically better one. He got back on track and got his own band, and that’s great.
Edit: and while Dave dwarfs James’ guitar skills, James dwarfs Dave in vocal skills.
