    Word of advice, to feel the texture of bubble chocolates (and their intent)is to allow the chocolate to sit a the top of your mouth and just melt. No all foods are meant to be chewed down and gulped instantly

    The snow snack is huge in French Canadian parts of Canada, we have this huge snow festival and everything. Our way of making it is a little different, we lay the snow out on a sheet, drizzle a long line of maple syrup on it, then take a popsicle stick and roll it over, homemade maple popsicle type beat

      It's also extremely common in Ontario as well. But, it's always with fresh, hot maple syrup that's just been made. Every maple syrup farm I know does it and every maple syrup festival I've been to makes it.

    At a 'Sugar-bush', a place where maple-syrup is harvested and prepared, you will get a treat of fresh maple-syrup poured onto snow to cool, then wrapped around a stick. I like putting mine in coffee or tea, but you can eat it right off the stick.
    And yes, I am a Canadian. I rarely have the Vachon cakes on their own, I prefer to have them with a bowl of ice cream. Glad you enjoyed.

    • @mspicer3262
      @mspicer3262 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SaltyandSweetSnacks a grove of sugar-maple trees is a 'sugar-bush', it's where all maple syrup originates. The trees are tapped in the early spring, when there's usually still a lot of snow on the ground.
      The raw sap almost looks like water, it gets boiled to remove the water, and you have syrup left. Trips to the sugar-bush are a staple of Canadian schools. I was in grade 2 when I first went on a field trip to a sugar bush. I was expecting something else, apparently, because I voiced my displeasure that it was "just trees". My mom was one of the chaperones who helped the teacher maintain control of thirty-five 7-8 year olds. Good times :)

    The way we do maple syrup on the snow in Canada is that you heat the syrup up and cook to "soft ball" stage from candy making. Then pour on the snow. Cooled down, it stops cooking and firms up to become a soft taffy texture. Then you roll it up on a stick and eat it. You don't actually eat the snow.

    While it is true that maple syrup on snow is a common tradition in many parts of Canada, it's also true that eating snow from outside is not the best idea, even if it's not directly off the ground, especially if you're in an urban area. As it falls the snow does capture a significant amount of pollutants from the air, so even though it may look fine you're still basically eating concentrated car/industrial exhaust.

    A lot of Canadian snacks had their origin from the UK (although now made here)as we have a close relationship and we are still a part of the British Commonwealth (former colonies that didn't fight them in a war and still stay close, lol!).Canadian chocolate generally has a higher(butter)fat content and less sugar/corn syrup than in the US. Our smarties predate M&M's so when the US Smarties(chalky /sour/sweet) came to Canada the" Smarties "brand already existed. So the manufacturer renamed them "Rockets" here - same candy/same packaging - get them at Hallowe'en!(BTW - if you ever receive a box of Mackintosh toffee -it's a slab of sort of hard toffee- chill it first and then smack it hard on a surface to break it into small pieces,easier to suck on as a hard candy and you won't break your teeth. People are always getting it in their "Canadian" packages and always confused!

      You don't often see Cherry Blossom as part of Canadian snack reactions (and you should). I never cared for the cherry inside goo but I loved the exterior chocolate shell (nothing like it) As a kid I always found the packaging cool. Another one you sometimes see but should see more often is the Eat More bar, or Eat Me as we used to call it and you could also make the pejorative by folding the wrapper. Very chewy not too sweet, a different taste of chocolate, I wouldn't mind one right now.

To make maple butter you simply boil maple syrup until it gets like caramel then you beat it with a stick repeatedly to add air to it, same thing you'd do to make butter and thats it. You can often have a huge breakfast at the sugar shack too: pea soup, eggs, pancakes, home fries, sausages, baked beans, deep fried pork rinds. Covered Bridge is my favourite brand of chips, but they are a smaller company and they aren't always easy to find outside of the east coast.
