    Sam Rockwell chooses roles based on his passion for the character. He is not in it for the money, that's just a bonus. That and his incredibly unique personality, borderline insanity, is what makes Sam Rockwell so great and yet so under the radar.

      I know I'm late to the party with this video but your comment is absolutely Sam Rockwell in a nutshell. He's amazing and it's a shame that he's so underrated. He's fantastic and I don't think there's anything he can't do - sing, dance, etc (I've yet to see him sing but it seems completely possible.).

    First fell in awe of Sam in Box of Moonlight (with Turturro). Great soundtrack too. Then Safe Men (another early favorite, with fantastic supporting cast & cameos!). Moon was brilliant, heartbreaking. And don't forget his earlier role as Jimmy in The Search for One-eyed Jimmy! So many brilliant performances (big & small) since the early 90s. Agree with comparison to Gary Oldman.

    He is the Gary Oldman of America. People talk of Daniel Day Lewis also. But I think only Gary Oldman and Sam Rockwell are one of those truely transformative actors, even more so than DDL, even though DDL may beat out the other 2 with skills and charisma. Another one is Joaquin Phoenix, especially in his demented and sardonic roles like Joker and The Master.

    I have always loved Sam Rockwell. I feel like your ordering of all these pics tend toward the banal, which is depressing when you obviously intend adulation of this actor whom I only have mixed feelings for his recent award because he can't just be one of my esoteric secrets ever again, despite also knowing if the awards were expressly about ability, and they are absolutely not, he more than earned his place for his panache at embracing the dangerous weirdo I can't help but recognize as a killer instinct and animal magnetism, charming for his fearless all in hokey pokey now I want to join in. Although I agree with some of your descriptions of him, Confessions... and Matchstick... are head and shoulders above most of his pics for standout reasons, not inarticulate crowd pleasers or completely unnecessary Christmas themed movies where De Niro phones it in, and for what? Because he acted in The Intern, as an overly polished too perfect set up as this devotional widow. Just answer me this, does a feel good movie hold your attention or does the vacuous, perfectly aligned domino trail plotline EVER make you wish for more? If I had to pick a straight role from Rockwell that at least understood the word juxtaposition and the necessity of conflict and touchingly despicable fallability, the only role and pic that conjured any interest in this category was his role as a girls' basketball coach, resuming the roll as a coach I believe, but first from a devil may care failing bus boy, alcoholic and lackustre father who plays against his own daughter's weaknesses. The De Niro movie was worthless. Mr. Right... Yes. He IS eerily charming, although it feels necessary to note that the character is a reprisal of his voice acting role in the animated series on Netflix, F is For Family. He is quite fuckable except for the very GLARINGLY, desperately age inappropriate "relationship" between him and Anna Kendrick. Is it a plausible scenario? Yes, of course. If it can be fucked, someone will try. Is it interesting? NO! Not even slightly. Can a wolf kill a sheep? I wohld sincerely hope so or else that wolf isn't a wolf any longer. Altogether it felt at every moment to be grooming behaviors for a totally intentional, preplanned, statuatory rape. It felt predatious, like a Lolita fantasy pasted into a pic meaning to be an irreverent, dark rom com, but hinestly even the reference at all to Lolita feels too generous. Frankly, despite whatever dynamic I am supposed to believe between them I could not, never able to even once ignore the cacaphonious pairing. Can't an actress who at least appears to be an adult be cast, rather than what is psychologically tantamount to taming, not even a cat, but a kitten! Cast a tiger who I can believe would have at least the ability to resist, as Kendrick was supposedly portraying, and honestly, at some point cause his heart to actually flutter. All zi could read was unsympathetic teenage angst and quite unrealistic tantrums. Give me substance! A real woman, also falliable, but instead with any kind of substance, I beg! Can't the female lead also have any real motivation, or forgive me, but do you expect me to WANT to relieve Amelie in all "love" stories? Have you actually seen Bonnie and Clyde? Did you know IRL she was the one who pushed the violence to the extremes, above and far beyond the instincts leading her beau. But take the cake! Without hyperbole, I was ONLY thoroughly bored with Seven Psychopaths, finding it to b one of the least creative movies I have ever seen, made with the apparent expectation that the cast, including the miracle and fact that Christopher Walken was well and alive to in this case add all the flavor and pizzazz of a potato. The script wasn't anything more than an afterthought having secured the talent. The random and excessive gun violence, with little modulation, couldn't do anything additive in this flim and felt soley more like a sound engineer should take the credit for turning the gunshots from off to on. It was crap! Neverthless, have you even seen Fosse and Verdon yet on Hulu? Wow! If ever another human's life were lived to be written into screenplay for Rockwell, and Rockwell alone, the life he revives of Bob Fosse was tailor fit to him! I could feel the flesh of this character's deeply disturbed version of marriage, fatherhood and how to cast a show by making a sexual buffet of your team. He was fuelled by compulsion and dexidrine, the brilliant artist and the loser unable to find any meaning in relationship, with what looks like Axis II Narcissim, and an extreme case of Attachment disorder he hoped to control with a host of addictions. Michelle Williams is no lightweight in this and rises to the occaison, giving more credit and respect to a real women that was not recognized equally, nevermind her contribution, role and talent. Both suffer, until their daughter too emulated their behavior, poor self-esteem, and addictions, treated very coldly and used between both parents. It's riveting! An uncut gem I will asperse you have yet to see is Rockwell in Jerry and Tom. Made a touch flashier and given adequate marketing this film could have been a dark classic. For what it is and appears to have meant to achieve, it's perfection, including the William H Macy cameo.

    • @kinvoya
      @kinvoya 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Paragraphs are your friends. Regarding Mr. Lucky, Sam Rockwell is 15 years older than Anna Kendrick. Not a big stretch by Hollywood standards. She has a little-girl vibe about her but she was 30 when they made this movie. Her character says that she has a graduate degree so I'd say the character is supposed to be somewhere between 25-30. She's hardly in the Lolita age range. I'd say Sam Rockwell's character is supposed to be about 10 years older and Sam has always looked and played young. I think you are projecting a lot onto this movie.
