  • Little known NBA and rock trivia for you guys. The quality of Queen's studio albums suffered in the 80s mainly because Freddie Mercury took up professional basketball under the name "Kelly Tripucka". Mercury, I mean, Tripucka was a solid small forward/guard with a mid-range game that allowed him to average over 20 points. On a related note, I considered naming this video "How to Save Energy for Offense 101 with Kiki Vandeweghe". Still waiting for the DVD to come out. December 13, 1983.

kelly tripuka was a great scorer, and he was *the man* for the pistons at the start of their rise to eventual nba dominance in the late-80s/early-90s, and this season he even managed to get them into the playoffs...but the team really couldn't get to the next level until they traded him for adrian dantley. dantley brought way more hardness, and he had a strong low-post presence that allowed laimbeer to get away from the post on offense, and up to the top of the key where his great shot could be utilized, and also as an outlet to swing the ball to isiah thomas and joe dumars for outside shooting/penetration.

Wow, thanks! I had never noticed the Mercury resemblance before.
BTW, with 35pts he was the 5th leading scorer in this game. Amazing.

This was the 186-184 triple overtime game which is still the highest-scoring regular season game in NBA history. Interestingly, Tripucka made the free throws which tied and broke the old record (March 6, 1982; San Antonio Suprs--171, Milwaukee Bucks--166 in triple overtime).

Pistons and Nuggets had some amazing offensive players in the 80s.
Alex English is one of the best offensive forwards ever.

Kelly Tripuka, great scorer. His name also roughly translates to vomitting bile three times, phonetically.

Right!! If it was my name, would change the pronunciation to: Tri-puck-a. I guess it doesn’t bother him.

No courtside seats, no photographers near the baskets. It makes the court seem so much more spacious. I imagine cause they didnt have computers then they needed a lot more statisticians on the sidelines to catch all stats.

Tripucka was really fine scorer/shooter. Not strong on D, like Aguirre and Dantley. But they had more of a post up game than he did.

Mick A I meant Kelly, Aguirre and Dantley were all a bit lacking on D.

@Ben DC4L wow tough question. Maybe dantley??

He could. Solid shooter, scorer, decent on break. No defender, fair rebounder at best, but ... has a lot of company there.

I'm sorry but the defense in this era was absolutely pathetic. Modern NBA All-Star games have more involved defenses than this.

The nuggets of the 80s were similar to the suns with Nash, all offense and run and gun with little emphasis on defense.

Lol you gotta understand that the 3 point line is still fairly new around this time. Many defenders played their man within 2-3 feet meaning the defence seems weak on the perimeter however it’s extremely tuff inside.

Yea defense was non existent away from the basket THEN!! BUUUTT a few seasons afterwards NOBODY from today would be averaging the same PPG during Late 80s-Early 2000s as they are now...BET!!!
