    Just installed these along with the BB harness into my LP. They are 100% completely as described and and advertised. They are the cleanest set I have tried. From North ms hill country blues to mr crowley they just kill it. That being said, the bridge is so clean that it sometimes does not break up the amp as fast as others do. Not a bad thing as you want plenty of versatility but i would invest in a clean boost pedal to go along with them like a TC electronics mini spark if you play a lot of high gain music.

      Sometimes you pay a bundle, but still don't get much tone. That's where knowledge comes in to the picture. Check for PAF reviews, like in GP, other mags. Talk to other players, check in shops and try out many. There is a lot to choose from. Dave Hunter an indepentent writer reviewed a bunch recently, within the last year, and they are on youtube, so you can hear what is available, and decide for yourself. Find someone you trust and listen to what they say.

      Athens, while I agree that the true haters should just be ignored, there are two areas that you need to rethink:
      1.Some of those who are being critical of the product's price/performance ratio have points that have been carefully considered & deserve to be read, whether or not you agree. Not all critique comes from 'haters', so don't dismiss every person who doesn't agree with you.
      2. Don't fall in the trap of blaming the less fortunate for their lot in life. One day the world may just humble you without you asking for it. Like it or not, all it would take for you to end up in their position would be for you to develop a serious chronic illness, start to wrestle with mental illness, or have a loved one disabled in an accident. The line between having a life that allows you to afford these pickups & a life that does not is a very fine line indeed (especially if you live in the USA).
      p.s. In case you are now judging me & making assumptions, FYI I can afford these pickups, and may get a pair to try out.

    Too pricey for us normal folks, but it is nice to hear pickups and pots with an actual range of sound using the tone knob. With most tone knobs, I'm used to settings like clear (10), mostly clear(7-9), and mud (0-6).

    • @ecmproductions11
      @ecmproductions11 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there are multiple things that goes into a tone knob ; such as a capacitor is, the nah its self, and of course the pickup set up and running from, try doing some alternate things.

      That's why I like my Made in Mexico Cabronita semi-hollow telecaster. Even the MIM "Fidelitron" pickups are just sweet enough and give enough dynamic control over picking and tone that all I need is a single volume nob, heck for that matter most of the time I'd rather use my EBVPJr. which has an even greater taper range... These pickups remind me a lot of great Filtertron pickups. Great clarity, plenty of growl, and special kind of sweet spot tone that lots of us are looking for.

    There are plenty of good PAF clones available nowadays. I have found these Specs do work best: mismatched coils, unpolished alnico bars, handwound patterns, matched sets and a builder that has heard actual vintage PAF's. The rest: type of wire gauge, type of alnico, waxpotting, output and looks are a matter of taste

    According to the doyle coils website these pickups can be purchased as vintage unpotted or lightly wax potted. Which ones are in your guitar? Let me also ask you if the vintage unpotted ones wouldn't be unsuited for some hi gain applications.

    Les Paul has so many awesome recordings that most people have no idea about. His music is still too odd and extreme for today. Most people wouldn't want their tone to sound like his cause they aren't going for a crazy clean tone. Just the idea of truly clear and articulate pickups makes me want these though. I'm sure they will retain their value also so it's an investment too. Viva la Les

  • @johnzane4610

    I've been a long time customer of Tom Doyle; in 1978 Tom installed his prototype hand-made bass pickups in my 74 red wine 4001 Rick ........ In some 40 odd years of playing I have never heard as powerful yet defined bass as what Tom built for me...... not only did he install his pickups, he shaved down the neck to Jazz Bass specs and matched the paint exactly. He also changed the pickups and bridge on my 1971 Gibson EBOL bass and set it up so I can use tape wound strings too make it sound like an upright....... my only regret is that I didn't have him make me a custom bass. Yes, Tom charges more but think of the money lost through buying guitars and then tire of them and then loose money getting rid of them. One last point, Tom WAS Les Paul's confident, co-inventor and dear friend; if it were not for Tom I doubt Les would have made it to 94 @@@@

    These sound good to me. PAF style are the best sounding in my book, and these are close. I have Seymour 59's in my LP copy and am satisfied with their sound. These Doyle coils sound more clear and bright, and more organic (what I'm hearing on the demo) I couldn't justify a high price though. I'll take a little less tone for a better price because most of the audience would never notice a cheaper pickup if it is adjusted/tweaked right. (pole pieces included).

    I don't know why people complain about the price for great tone!!! And these do sound good!!! And what's the alternative to get your les paul to sound like an original 58-60 LP????
    Has anybody seen the prices for original PAF'S and PAT. pickups lately??? Last time I checked they were going for about 1,000-1,200 bucks a piece. Let's face the reality, Gibson makes a pretty good pickup. But these guys like SD, Throback, Sheptones, to name a few. They are doing us a favor not a diservice. Expensive? Yes absolutely. But you can get real close to the sound of an original LP ($250,000). With the right pots, and caps too, of course...

      I don't disagree with that. I have sets of High Order (cheapest hand wound), Throbak SLE-101's, Skatterbrane PAF replica's. Tone isn't always about the cost. All the original PAF's sounded different. The factors were the winding 7-9k and magnet type AII, AIII, AIV, and AV. Also if it was a short or long magnet. The most important factor is matching a particular set of PAF's that sounds good in your guitar. For example, I know that SD seth lover is an excellent PAF replica. I had 1 set in a les paul that sounded great!. I bought another set and put it in my SG and it sounded dull and uninspiring. You have to find the pup's that sound good and match the instrument. I have 59 style pickup replica's loaded in the SG made by High Order and the guitar kills. All the boutique winders use slightly different wire and magnets in their builds. And it's this that makes the biggest difference in the sound. Just because a pickup is cheaper doesn't make it the best choice and vice versa.

    Better to buy used if you are knowledgeable about LP's, prices can vary according to many factors, the least being long neck tenon joint, or buy other guitars.Silvertones, Danelctros, Kays,...you save a bundle over the price of a new guitar at a shop when you buy used.
    Proof: was in Manhattan at 47/48th st. at several shops there, and LP's were at least 2 thousand USD, back in early 2000's flametops, standards, but always cheaper buying used.
    I left with a Thinline Tele, all mahogany body, for 300 USD(Fender-Squire) changed the neck to a Fender fat "c" shape, and it's a keeper, lighter than a LP, plus now I own several LP's, flamed tops, all modded to meet historical specs. to go with all my other collected gear, amps, pedals, and on, and on...but guitar collecting is habit forming like heroin or meth. or anything that eats money and isn't always redeemable.

    THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS TO NOT POT THE PICKUP but nothing says they aren't. Too bad that doesn't sound like PAFs at all. Go check SD pickups for the real thing guys

    • @BramClaes
      @BramClaes 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There is no such thing as the PAF, because they were very inconsistently made. Output greatly varied, and a variety of magnets were used (alnico IV being the most common). In short: situation surrounding the PAF pickup would be like modern day Gibson making different varieties of burstbuckers, the 498t's, etc... and sell them as one and the same pickup. Ergo: trying to capture the sound of the original PAF is a fool's errand, because "the" PAF sound doesn't exist

    • @khurai111
      @khurai111 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      No there is. The sound varies sure.But there is a constant character that doesn't change. It cannot be obtained with varried output or magnet. It's just the potting

      It's sounds pretty close to the real deal to me (at least through the speaker setup I'm using and TH-cam). I've heard loads of vintage PAFs but they're not all the same. I much prefer most Gibson pickups to Seymour Duncans. THe real thing that causes a PAF to sound like a PAF is age. You can artificially age a magnet or use less winds to match the sound of a particular PAF. As far as wax goes, it all depends on the amount, coil winds and magnet makeup. I guess what I'm saying is, it all matters because it's a formula. Oh and also there are some PAFs that don't sound all that great because the winding was never consistent

    Sounds as good as most boutique paf pickups. Its extremely expensive which no way on earth the price tag could be justified!! At yhe end of the day he is using the same material the rest of vintage correct pickups do and all he is adding is his experience of working with Les Paul and that is not the excuse for such a big price jump. More importantly he is not winding the pickups himself! Poor Les Paul, if he only knew how they try to make money out of misusing his name!!!!

      mmoris1360 I feel the same way, they sound like boutique humbuckers to me, to my ear the Lollar Regal has more of a single coil sound than these pickups.

    While these sound great, it doesn't do much for the buyer unless you are showing a comparison to another pickup(s). And $500? Good luck with your 3 sales.

    I can't stand the Snake Oil being pushed out there.
    Les Paul HATED Hi Z pickups. He used Lo Z PU's because studio gear was the same impedance and recorded better. Look at his own Les Pauls in his day. They are low impedance SINGLE COILS.
    Another $500 set of pickups that sound just like the other few hundred PAF's out there. Save $350 & buy a pair of '59's

    They're only overpriced by about 100%. Sound good but there's plenty of competition out there from Bare Knuckles, WCR, David Allen, etc., etc. Took 40 years to figure out what he did to begin with?

      A million thumbs up. Fuck these twats. Play hard, play with your heart. Les always loved the tone of a high impedance humbucker. Thats why he never used one, and all his 'special' Gibsons were single coil low impedance instruments. Fuck you (video guy).

    Great pickups from the 50s and60s are the greatest cuz of two reasons, great craftsmanship and materials, and natural aging process, they can get closer or equal the first one, but aging is not for sale... 500? What a rip off... These are goodPUPs but not better than any Dimarzio , Duncan , etc....

    • @mmore
      @mmore 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is true. But you can buy aging as well I guess! Seymour Duncan antiquity!! Or at least that is what he says.

      +gatitavelosa I wish I liked Duncan pickups (for my own playing), but I haven't been able to find one that I've jumped for joy over. They sound really cool with other players but I could never find one I'm like "YESSS" over. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong direction. Dimarzio I've seemed to like a bit more but, again, same situation. It's freakin' weird.

    • @ShotGunRoleModel
      @ShotGunRoleModel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had nearly every major brand and quite a few of boutique pickups in a massive amount of my guitars. I'm not going to have a pissing contest as to how much I've spent on pickups. For some sounds, I think Duncans sound cool; they're just not the sounds I typically go for or like for myself. Sounds great often with other players, though. That been said: I do like some of their telecaster pickups. I was considering getting a pair before I looked into [another company] I liked more. And, for the record, they cost just as much. Tone has nothing to do with money; it's a personal preference.
