    Regardless of what they say, govt employees can ALWAYS be recorded under the 1st amendment free press protections. There's tons of caselaw on it across the country. Always record your interactions for an unbiased objective record. Some states require notice to the other party. Essentially tell them you're recording and if they interact with you they consent. Referred to as a 2 party consent state.

    I have a DOT box. Triangles, vest, light, magnetic tail, brake lights, fuses, fire Ex, tools... but for inspection the fire Ex has to go into mounted bracket I can’t get to easily. (But that’s legal). :(

    I do D.O.T. annual vehicle inspections at my work. The trucks I see that are the worst are the "local" kind of guys. They never go out far enough to go across a scale. Then they just let things get worse and worse. I did an inspection on a truck (it failed), come to find out I did the last inspection 4 years earlier.

    Can I make a suggestion when your chaining down a load... I noticed your hooking on the outside of the rub rail on the trailer. Its better and will save you any questions by any dot later on if you can get the hook on the inside of the rail. I drove over the road and had a officer make me redue mine. Said the reason being was if for some reason you get side swipped the rail will protect your chains and straps from coming off vs being on the outside can make the load come loose. Otherwise keep up the good videos.

    I did the prep for bit inspection probably 5 or 6 times, they also want to see your daily equipment inspection, maintenance records, your maintenance schedule for PM and driver logs or time card if within the 100 mile radius to prove hours of service, it's always the paperwork that would get me, most inspectors would use this as a teaching moment and not a gotcha and write you up moment, you will probably see the same guy in 2 years, so follow through with the "advice" he's going to give you, good luck with tomorrow

  • @lilmster5191
    @lilmster5191 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Electric drums you are supposed to check the trailer pull away with it unplugged from truck. (Yes if the truck is off it shouldn't feed power to the trailer) You run the risk of feeding more than 12v to your drums if your truck is putting a power charge to your trailer battery and then the battery puts full 12v to lock the drum up. This will fry your magnetic in your drums. Newer trailers have resisters in the battery box to prevent this from happening. Also the code say the trailer brakes need to hold its own weight.

    Sorry for all the trouble you have to go through, but especially down in Texas there are so many shady CDL drivers that stuff like this is necessary. It's common to see log trucks and dual tandem dumps that you can tell shouldn't be on the road from a mile away. But I say if all the pain in the ass inspections you do over a career help you catch a potential failure that could save a life, isn't it all worth it? I appreciate true professionals like you Sir who take this serious, and to those that don't or are in a rush and become complacent, I invite you to come assist with the body removal on the next fatal accident involving a truck I run.

    When I owned my tow trucks, in addition to annual state inspections by a licensed truck inspection location, the county I had authority to tow for required a separate inspection by them.
    DOT would come out to do SURPRISE inspections, which in most cases wasn't a big deal.
    The county tow authority inspection was a bother as they wanted to impound the truck until they finished which could shut you down for the day.
    One thing to be aware of is if you move or change business address, you must do it in person. Evidentially, you must be some type of a risky person??

    One correction I want to add, you do not fall under CDL rules if the tow vehicle is under 26k and the trailer is not over 10k, therefore you can legally operate your truck with up to a 10k trailer without a CDL. If your truck is rated at 26k and you pull a 10k trailer you can legally run 36k without a CDL! On a side note, I run a dually 3500 rated at 13,025#, I buy new 14k trailers and have them de-rated to 12,900# before I register them in order to stay under the 26k GCVWR and avoid the CDL requirement. I do have to pay for tonnage up to 26k on the truck plates, about an extra $200 in WA state.

      I do not know what state you can drive a "combination" of 36K with out a CDL. That has to be a typo.
      Some states like mine ( TX ) allow a farmer to carry over 26001K without a CDL but you have restrictions like distance from the farming land and can not go over interstate lines and IIRC up to 34K last time I checked.
      His dodge is a class 5 rate vehicle and he will most likely need a CDL for any heavy duty trailer

    Section 34601 CVC (G) "(G) Vehicles never operated in commercial use, including motor trucks or two-axle truck tractors, with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 26,001 pounds, when operated singly, or, when used to tow a camp trailer, trailer coach, fifth-wheel travel trailer, trailer designed to transport watercraft, or a utility trailer, never operated in commercial use. Vehicle combinations described in this subparagraph are not subject to Section 27900, 34501.12, or 34507.5."
    That's very clear. If you don't charge for delivery fee then I'd say go for it. There is that less than 8001 lbs unladen weight. I have a regular cab and chassis, and I don't know where to look for "unladen weight." "Unladen is a CHP term," where I think the industry term is "curb weight" or something like that. So, over 11500 lbs but less than 8001 pounds with a bed over 9'. I don't think an engineer with masters degree in grammar could dissect that sentence without proper conjunctive adverbs. So, if there was a such thing as rule of law, instead of abuse of discretion, which has no punitive deterrence we could feel safe in this grey area. I spoke with CHP MCP people and they said they had hardline inspectors that will, without any burden of proof cite you for commercial use regardless. I always thought they had the burden of proof, so I guess the citation is based upon suspicion, and then they can investigate and see if you were never mind, who the heck knows, it's really a bitch for part time entrepreneurs who want to do a side job now and then.

The random drug test is absolutely wrong with giving them that power, you shouldn't be giving them that option. The more power you give them the more they feel that they can break your ball's when ever they feel like it. This is just a clarification for everyone who doesn’t understand how the entire weight rating system works
    When he says 19,500 for his rating on his dodge he means the gross vehicle weight rating, not combined weight rating.
    His gross combined weight rating is around 37,500 ish pounds meaning his truck, trailer, plus his load cannot weight over 37k no matter what trailer or load he is pulling.
    37,500 pound = gross combination weight rating
    When he says 19,500 plus 7,000 he means VWR and TWR,
    VWR = 19,500 pounds
    TWR = 7,000 pounds
    So with that specific truck and trailer he is only good for 26,500 pounds before he is over weight.
    26,500 pounds = his CWR “combination rating”
    37,500 pounds = his GCWR “ gross combination weight rating”
    Witch means his 5500 is still good for another 11,000 pounds. But he would have to switch to a different trailer with a higher TWR to utilize the trucks full potential.
    If he had a trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating of 18,000 pounds he can legally pull his max rating.
    Also I need to clarify that just because a trailer is rated for 18,000 pounds doesn’t mean you can put 18k on the deck, to calculate that you would need to weight the trailer “tare weight” and subtract that from the TWR
    For example -
    5,500 pound trailer “empty”
    18,000 pound “TWR” =
    12,500 pounds is all someone could legally put on the deck of a trailer.
    Oh and on top of all of that even thou someone paid for a 45k tag on his truck he will still get a ticket for being over 37,500 pounds, DOT officers know or will lookup the GCWR of that truck, just because he paid for it doesn’t mean he can exceed his 37,500 gcwr.
    If anyone has questions feel free to ask.

      @@VBELTandSON I was just using what you said about your enclosed trailer, I wasn’t using the gooseneck in that last comment.
      I wasn’t trying to be a key board warrior last night I just wanted to share with everyone and go into more depth about how the weight rating system works. These are all things that I had to learn the hard way, I am in Southern California running a small trucking company with the same truck your using.
      Correct me if I’m wrong but your 5500 GCWR is 37500 pounds, witch means your truck trailer plus your load cannot exceed that rating, no matter what trailer you have behind you, no matter how much weight the trailer is rated for.
      Like I said before I’m not trying to be a key board warrior I just don’t want to see you get busted by that one chp officer that had a bad day at work and decided to take it out in you and your business, because you and I both know CHP will do that sometimes. It’s not often but it happens.
