This the the perfect ending to an incredible story. So many little details helped this sink in even more, and I'm bawling. My grandpa lived to be 91 years old and never got to see the Cubbies win the World Series. All the heartbreak, the ridicule and the unwavering hope paid off. What a hell of a journey. Hollywood couldn't write a better finale, and this is real life.
My grandfather was died at 87 4 yrs before the red sox won in 04. Technically he was alive when they won in 1918 but not like he watched it or really was cognitive to the fact at 5.
If only Steve Goodman could have been there to share in this victory. He was a lifelong Cubs fan -- and he's the one who wrote this song. He died of leukemia at the age of 36 in 1984. Try to think of him when you hear this.
If they ever make a movie about the 2016 season, I'm envisioning the 'fade to black' and this playing as the credits begin to roll. I can't help but smile when I watch this :)
@@kgrace1985 I'd say a montage sets up history, which includes the black cat, the goat, Steve Bartman, etc. Maybe pick it up with the new ownership and signing/drafting the boys. Either way, I'd like this song to play as the credits roll :)
What stuck in my craw when I watched the victory rally in Grant Park that day was that NOBODY, not even Brett Eldredge who led the crowd in singing it, mentioned Steve Goodman. Every time I go to a Cubs game that they win, I look towards the heavens and smile as I sing along with it. If only he knew how much his song means to the Cubs fans...and if only they knew more about him.
This song was written by Steve Goodman, who also wrote "City Of New Orleans". Best friend to John Prine. Died much too young of leukemia that he knew would kill him early. This was one of his last songs.
He wrote this song out of spite because his previous Cubs related song, "A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request" was deemed to be too depressing by Dallas Green, the owner of the Cubs at the time. It is a great anthem for Cubs fans, but it was in fact made sarcastically.
@@TB-gp7kx I met Goodman and saw him several times towards the end of his (and the beginning of my) career. He was the most dynamic, entertaining and talented performer of the 20th century folk scene--sorry, Bob Dylan & Woody Guthrie, "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request" was truly autobiographical. He wrote it 3 years before he died (of the leukemia he had suffered for 16 years) and played it live on WGN-TV barely a year before he died. Dallas Green & the (then) Cubs' owners & managers thought it was merely bitter & snarky and banned it from Wrigley. Little did they know it embodied the extent of his love for the Cubs---what comes off as bitterness was really the desperation and disappointment of what was until then basically unrequited love. Hilarious--but true (at least before 1984, from 1985-2016, and again till now) and bittersweet. Those of us who are both Cubs & Goodman fans feel it deeply even as we laugh. "Go Cubs Go," however, was written not out of spite, but more as (IMHO unnecessary) atonement. The Cubs were on the cusp of becoming contenders for the first time since WWII ("...the last time the Cubs were in the World Series was the year they dropped the bomb on Japan...") and needed an inspirational but catchy song to be played before radio/TV broadcasts and at Wrigley for fans to sing. They reached out to Goodman (the natural choice) and he graciously made lyrical amends. What an outrage that Brett Eldredge never mentioned Steve when he led the 2016 Grant Park victory rally crowd in singing it! It was far from Steve's best work, of course, but ironically the only song he both wrote & sang to become a hit. (The massive succcess of Arlo Guthrie's cover of "City of New Orleans" was what enabled Goodman to become a homeowner; "You Never Even Call Me By My Name," co-written with John Prine, was a country megahit for David Allan Coe; and Steve's cover of Michael Smith's "The Dutchman" reached the top of the folk charts, such as they were back then--so much so that most folk music fans back then assumed he, and not Smith, wrote it. It's still the definitive version).
