    I totally disagree with your opinion of Altaïr's personality. I thought his early game depiction was one of the best ever shown of a dude who's an arrogant jerk. His descent into questioning himself, coming to see his enemies as human beings, and his transformation into a serious yet humble professional is one of my favorite heroes journeys in the franchise.

    • @Desmond9100
      @Desmond9100 5 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      Yes. Altair actually has an arc, plus his look with that outfit, missing finger and half hidden face is awesome

    • @hypercynic
      @hypercynic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Altair is one of the worst characters in gaming history. To claim he's got any form of character arc or anything interesting about him, you must not even be familiar with mediocre character writing, let alone something interesting and well developed...

    • @homersams9015
      @homersams9015 5 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      HyperCynic look it's a """cynic""" who claims he knows a lot about good writing 🤔. No one claims that Altair is a masterclass in writing, however his transformation from the start of the game to the end is subtle and interesting enough to merit acclaim.

    • @jasonblalock4429
      @jasonblalock4429 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Also, even if Altair's arc in AC1 is a bit weak, he's really redeemed in AC: Revelations. Seeing how the mistakes of his youth resulted in a life of regret was pretty powerful.

  • @PsychoWerekitsune
    @PsychoWerekitsune 5 ปีที่แล้ว +290

    I've been saying this for years. The original AC came out during that awkward period where every game was going for that ugly, washed out, "realistic" look. Its controls we're clunky as hell, and both, Altaire and Desmond moved like they were drowning in molasses. While sequels restricted your abilities to some extent, you still had almost unlimited freedom with how you explored and where you went.
    If any game would benefit from a full remake, it'd be this one. I'm not sure why every other game has been re-released and upscaled for modern systems when this is the one game that needs, and deserves it the most. It would be amazing to run around Jerusalem with a more modern engine, just sayin'.

    5:50 You want a new and Complete experience from the 1st Assassin's Creed? Well if you do here is an interesting fact: One of the game developers said that the original Assassin's Creed wasn't supposed to have a hud, minimap or anything on the screen. That's right it's just you and the game with no hud elements on the screen! How you are supposed to play this then? Well the developer said that if you play this game in such a way, it feels like you're actually becoming an Assassin. You don't have a map or any hud elements. You have to rely on your instincts and your senses, hence WHY this game is so repetative. For example, when you begin your investigation into your next target you are supposed to gather info, but I don't have a map so how do I find it? The bureau assassins actually tell you some valuable hints where to seek info. You climb the Syncro Point, and search your surroundings, or you can walk around town and listen to town criers to hear if they have the info you need. This way of playing the game is not perfect obviously but it's really interesting nonetheless.

I do miss the amazing visuals and gameplay of the series but I can no longer find the interest to go back to the franchise

    Honestly I've never understood the hate directed at the "current day" portions up until AC 4. They provide some calm between the action, having a game that is nonstop action all the time is just exhausting. But most importantly I love how the conflict between the tempelars and assassins is an ongoing struggle throughout history still going on today and the modern day is an interesting side story in addition to the historic one. In AC 4 it got weird with the game development stuff and I haven't played any of the later ones so I can't say how it's done there. I've heard its removed completely, is that true?

  • @domenicomarzolla3045

    Let me first say that I will never forget the awe, excitement and curiosity that I felt when, in 2007, from my horse I stared down for the first time on the city of Damascus from that hill; I think we could all somehow "feel" that it was the beginning of a new era in gaming.
    I disagree with your characterization of Altair. He wasn't a blank slate at all, he was just of few words and you had to listen carefully to his interactions to catch his personality. In reality he had quite a coherent and interesting character arc, going from a testosteroney, arrogant, overconfident ass at the beginning of the game to a wise, soft-spoken leader at the end. His every encounter with Al Mualim, the Assassin chiefs in the cities, the targets and even the build-up quests characters show his evolution. In my opinion, Altair is probably the best fleshed-out character of the whole series, if you take into account the Codex pages in AC2 and the memories in Revelations.
    The game on the overall did was mostly a tech demo to showcase what Ubisoft was capable of and to kickstart a new franchise, so it's fair that one wouldn't want to replay it, except to relive the atmosphere of the Holy Land.

I know it's probably not gonna ever happen, but I would really love for them to come back to this particular game and just. Redo it all. Altair is super interesting when we see him in Revelations and in the novels as well. The setting would look so stunning with modern graphics standards (it feels a liiiittle washed out looking at it now), and just seeing how they could overhaul the gameplay and quests with what they've learned... It could be so much better. They'd probably have to retcon stuff though and again, realistically they'd probably never do it :'/ I would be so jazzed if they ever did though.

    Honestly this game had my favorite combat at least up to Revelations, and more than Ac 3/4/R and Unity/ syndicate (havent played the most recent two). It was skilled and nuanced if you were good at it. It can feel like nothing but defending and countering. But if you're good it can be pretty fluid. Using timed strikes to get faster and more impressive kills, dodging to take advantage of a heavy attack from an enemy, throwing enemies into each other to make openings or into scaffolding to kill whole groups. And of course, a well timed counter to kill foolish attackers. I just wish the free running/climbing were more fluid (although honestly Revelations had my favorite climbing) and the crouching and cover mechanic could be pretty awesome. And the crowd cover mechanic would be good. But this game is still fun and I still enjoy playing it

    you focus on the completely wrong things about the game. what a lot of people dont understand is how ur literally just not playing it right. for example, combat is played completely different in this game. there's many things u don't know. for example, when a enemy taunts or becomes scared u can run at them out of ur combat and assassinate them. which is how it's supposed to be played. u also r cringy asf. u also focus on things that are meant to be a pain, all collectibles are annoying so just do it. as for the bugs, it was main in 2007. which u can look past due to the amazing dialogue and narrative. u talk abt how its boring to speak to others and follow the story but its because ur making the game a chore. the atmosphere and vibe are strong ofc sure like all other assassins creed games but what makes this game shine as one of the best for me, is the story and how u actually play as a assassin in the creed unlike the other games. just because the mission structure and seem tedious doesn't take away from the fact that all 10 templars are unique and every last word they mutter is intriguing. if there's problems with the flags. DONT. DO. IT. u shouldn't want to skip cut scenes, u should embrace it. u make it tedious with ur urge for better gameplay but that's just because ur to dull and dense to figure out the game. u didn't even touch on how the parkour in this game is arguably the best we've seen from any game period as long as u go in depth. sure, it doesn't give u a step by step tutorial abt side and back ejects and how the game is perfectly sculpted for the most satisfying movements based off ur choices but that makes it all the more special when u find it urself. u jus never did. I bet u didn't even find the secret room in the modern day that teases even origins. the thought in this game was tremendous and the fact u called it below average makes my blood boil by ur ignorance.

    I’ve never had problems one hundred presenting Assassin’s Creed 1. The only thing I did have problems with were finding the flags, I would usually have maps online to show me where they are, and they did usually come in handy but while going through the story I would accidentally get a couple of flags, then when I went to get all the flags achievements I wouldn’t know where they are or I would think that I already got it but then it turn out that I didn’t so then I’d have go through all the flags again to see with one I missed. I love Assassin’s Creed game but that always pisses me off with I why I rarely one hundred percent that game! You bet you’re ass I’d definitely 100% if it’s remaster or redesigned!!

    AC1 was the first thing I saw Kristen Bell in. It really weirded me out when I saw her in a movie years later and finally remembered her being in AC1 after like half an hour. There was just something eerie about seeing the same face just not 3D modeled anymore. I doubt it would bother me as much now, though, since scanning voice actors' faces is a bit more commonplace.

    Not surprised to hear this rating. I absolutely hated the first Assassin's Creed when I first played it because I felt like I couldn't do anything after losing all my powers, Metroid style. Also the reason for it was duuuuuumb. Losing my equipment fine, I'm not allowed to use that stuff anymore because the boss said so, I can accept that. Forgetting how to do certain moves though? That's just ridiculous. Anyway a few years later I came back to it and actually LOVED the game! I ate it up and blasted through it in a few days and then immediately charged into Assassin's Creed 2. About 30 minutes into the second game I was thinking "Man, now that I have this better version AC1 seems pretty bad huh?"
    I respect the first game for starting the series and it's unfair to judge it against the games that built on what it began, but I can't help but feel like it's pointless now with how good the sequel was.

    While AC may have been, and probably will continue to be, buggy as all hell I cannot help but look past that as I just found the base game and story enjoyable. However, the latest releases of Origins and Odyssey, are just not for me. Everything I loved about the games are completely gone in Origins and Odyssey, not to mention this new protag they just threw in with not much explanation. In my opinion, Origins suffered in the fact that the game opened in the middle of what seemed like act 3, with no information to go on, and Odyssey made you play the whiniest spartan every imagined.This isn't to mention how little the cult leaders mattered in the end in Origins. And why are we going to Vikings? Origins ended with Julius Caesar becoming the "father of understanding" or the origination of the Templar order, and Odyssey took us back to Greece. I'm just restarting AC 3, and I realized by an accidental pause when some pop-up was up, that Altair ain't even the first ancestor, there's some guy named Aquilus back during the time of Rome. Also, you may have encountered bugs for side missions and challenges like flags and Templars disappearing, in Odyssey, I had a Cultist bug-out on me. Now I can't ever complete the main story of Odyssey, unless I decide to do the entire agonizing 30+ hours again, and hope the same cultist doesn't glitch out again.

      Honestly that would kinda suck. The only real things that should change about it are the updated smoothness of free running, and crouching, maybe the walking/running assassinations they introduced in 3. Its combat is still among my favorite in the whole series because it rewards skilled gameplay and tactical thinking as opposed to the kill combos of ac3/4 or the parry heavy Unity combat. And I kinda like how air assassinations are still possible but you have to do that yourself, not just stand above them and press X

    I never understood why people hated the flags in this game, they usually involved lots of climbing, jumping, sometimes a small puzzle to work out how to get to them. What I didn't like was having no way of knowing where they could be without checking every single alleyway and every single rooftop of every building in every town and city, miss 1 flag and it's goodbye achievement. Map markers are something which has been added in later games, but they went overboard in recent titles, some exploration is good Ubisoft! Regardless they were never "mindless" collectables like I see in many other games where you just check every corner, which involves no gameplay just busywork.

    When this game came out, it was a blast. I have the PS3 version and, honestly, I really enjoyed it although it was far from perfect (I played it and finished it in 2015, years after its release). Upon beating the game, I also wished there was more done on the Miles' part of the story (or lack thereof) and gathering the flags was quite tedious. While I never look at walkthroughs to complete a game, I did it to get all the flags since I was getting bored of just wandering, hoping to find a flag while the beggars and drunk guys are being annoying af (not to mention going through the fucking cutscenes everytime!!!) Still, considering it was the first of the franchise, I still think they did a fairly good job at it. I would have at least given it a "play it" rating, but then again, I didn't have the glitch problems and all. Maybe the PS3 version is better on that part despite not having achievements.

Then Ezio came along and I absolutely adored Assassin’s Creed 2 and the next 2 games. Assassin’s Creed 3 was okay but with a shitty ending. And Assassin’s Creed 4 came along with its stupid boat that was absurdly overused and it was downhill from there. The modern day sections have never gotten good. It's like they know making those bits interesting is beyond them with the crunched time frame they're always working under, so they just...don't bother.
    11:31: Kristen Bell? All time great? Wow, dude. I mean, she's not a...bad actress and she's definitely pretty, but there's, easily, 100-200 better actresses. A looker, but definitely not a phone booker. Probably a 6/10 in terms of performance skill. (For just three examples of, definite, phone bookers: Thelma Ritter, Helen Mirren, Bette Davis.)
