I feel online communities tend to either OVERHYPE or just plain HATE something without having that nuanced discussion about what worked and didn't work. It happened with "Velma" and got so bad that people compared it to "Puss in Boots; The Last Wish" even though the two productions couldn't be any different other than being animated and one actually caring for the medium and the other just being trash. This leads to series and movies being so overhyped people hate it out of principle, or so overhated you wonder what was there that caused so much vitriol.
The cartoon/animation community is notorious for this we we seemingly normalized having a hyperbolic mindset that accepts having toxic tendencies. You CAN call out a show's weaknesses and strengths without having to have wish death upon those that created it. It's like people forget that at the end of the day we are all just grown-ass adults fighting over cartoons. We should learn to hype responsibly and accept that not everyone will love or hate the same thing and THAT'S OK.

My first experience with toxic fandoms was when I was about seven, way back in the mid-90s. The original Star Wars trilogy had just been re-released on VHS and everyone was raving about it, especially on the playgrounds of schools across the country. Like many kids that age, I'd both watched and loved them, but the enjoyment was soured when I told my classmates that Return of the Jedi was my favourite. All of a sudden, I was a laughing stock by everyone else, who evidently had all agreed that Empire was the better choice. And that kind of "let's gang up on the one guy in the group who thinks different to the rest of us" is something I've unfortunately had to see (either done to others or be on the receiving end myself) in every other fandom I've been a part of 😟

I think a lot of the hate on Steven universe comes from those of us who watched it from the beginning. We were so excited and loved the show and loved everything that it was building up for, we were very emotionally invested and were not knowing what to expect. And one thing that the show did a really great job of is making us really hate diamonds. That’s why a lot of us did not like the redemption arc. Because they made literal space Nazis and then told everyone that they have to forgive them. Then you re-watch the show and see them only ever punish people who have been abused in a striking out because they have been hurt but only ever forgive people who just spout hateful rhetoric. That’s where I think a lot of the justified hatred for the show comes from. It’s not the show isn’t good, it’s that it is so good and yet it has underlying themes of forgiving genocidal Nazis and people who are bigots and giving them a second chance instead of giving those who need a second chance. It’s like getting a beautiful and delicious dessert, and it taste great but then having an awful aftertaste that makes you violently ill later.

      Yeah.
      It was a mess.
It just felt like someone took the playground philosophy of “forgive and forget” and actually tried to apply it to things like genocide, Coercion and straight up abuse.
Which was either seen as malice or, by most people, insane naivety from the creators who bought and sold it so eagerly.
Rise of the TMNT also had a similar issue with the character of Baron Draxum. However, unlike Steven Universe, the one good thing was that they could actually defeat him.
But dear lord, his presence in season 2 dragged him and Mikey down Big Time.

Steven Universe came out at around the same time that I started questioning my gender, sexuality, and my place in the world among other things. It really helped me learn how to accept myself for who I was and how to recognize when I needed to ask for help from others. I figured out pretty quickly that fusions were a metaphor/symbol for relationships/love being expressed in a relationship and it made me feel so much more comfortable and happy with the show once I figured that out. The fusions are not limited to characters who are romantically attached to each other, they also happen to show different kinds of love. When Steven and Greg fused in the movie, it was a show of familial love. When Ruby and Sapphire fuse, it's a show of romantic love. When Steven fused with himself after the White Diamond showdown, it was a show of self love. So on and so forth. But it also shows things like when relationships go bad or how it's normal for some people to just not want to be in a relationship while also expressing that the love is still there, even if it's not being expressed in the conventional way. Peridot, for example, has shown interest in fusion before (asking questions, running tests, etc.) but doesn't wish to be fused with anyone else. She has also shown her interest in romantic relationships (shipping charts and stuff) but she actively avoids becoming involved in anything like that. And it's perfectly fine! Nobody gets mad at Peridot for not wanting to fuse and instead they all respect her decision and let her express her care and love for others in her way. Lapis Lazuli and Jasper are the prime examples of a toxic/abusive/unhealthy relationship because neither of them actually cared for each other and instead had separate goals that directly opposed each other. Jasper wanted Lapis' strength in order to kill Steven, but Lapis wanted to have someone to take her anger out on. Who better than the gem that's actively trying to kill the kid who just freed her from her 1000 year imprisonment in the mirror? They both attached to each other because they both wanted to cause pain and suffering, but that is not what a relationship or a fusion should be based on. After Lapis and Jasper unfused and they went their separate ways, Lapis expressed that she never wanted to fuse with anyone ever again because of how badly things went with Jasper. At first, she even refused to develop any sort of connection to anyone other than Steven. Lapis was aggressive towards everyone who wasn't Steven because she was afraid of what would happen if she got attached again. At the end of the story though, Lapis is now friends with the other Crystal Gems and she has been learning from them that it's okay to love and trust others who have earned it from you. There's so much more that I could go on about but I'm sick and I'm running g out of brain cells.
The point I'm trying to make is that the entire show, every single character present, every theme, every episode, the very essence of the cartoon Steven Universe is healing. Healing wounds, physical and mental. Healing relationships. Healing past traumas and misconceptions. Healing from mistakes, both your own and others.
The very soul of the show is healing in every sense of the word.

The Velma show plotline, forced integration thrown into the marketing (honestly I get cynical when the marketing prioritizes diversity because it is way too often hot air and clout chasing), and jokes are groan worthy but I had the same idea about the animation being not bad. Like, the show is bad, but the animation would be a big refresh if there wasn't so much other stuff to suffer through. For Steven Universe, you didn't know Garnet was a couple of non-binary lesbians (or at least the closest they could get at the time by making them technically rocks with she/her and they/them pronouns and just that being their whole species) until like 50 episodes in. But the further along they got the more the show managed to cover new, very important topics and even troll the censoring squads in other parts of the world with Ruby in a dress and Sapphire in a suit. All while never once announcing it as the main idea of the show, because the main ideas if the show were overcoming trauma and a deconstruction of love and loss, as well as growing up. That and learning that someone you build yourself around wasn't a great person until near the end of their life, and that leaving a place of abuse still has an aftermath on new people they meet and even those after they pass away.

The animation is decent and stood out for an adult animation, but it's not amazing enough that it's gonna change people's opinion about it. When it's blended with very shit writings and directions, everybody will crap on it as well. I am actually very surprised that there is a lot of people who didn’t like Steven universe usually the people I’ve been around literally worship the show personally I kind of dislike the show but instead.. it’s kind of for personal reasons that obviously isn’t intended to be related to, But the reason why I don’t really like the show, is because at least for me I get bored really quickly like I’m only able to watch like two episodes of the series until my brain literally just dries into itself I thought it was just kid me being biased but even watching the series while I’m older it’s still just painfully boring to me.
This is where I give out a bit of criticism for this video.
wanted to add just because of Velma has good animating doesn’t automatically mean that it’s a good show I’ve watched many cartoons that have astonishing animation yet Hot garbage writing.. good animation doesn’t efficient if a show is good or not:/ also the thing that you added where you feel like some people like to review in an echo room (basically meaning that they don’t want their opinions to be contradicted) kind of contradicts your own claims because you refuse to actually show face value to why these opinions pop up in the first place which kind of gives off a bit of biased energy. also I can tell that you don’t actually watch the reviews you just assume that they’re being ignorant so I watched some of the “ignorant” reviews that you showed in your video and they actually give a good reasons why they don’t like the show.

Game of thrones (i havent seen) suffered same. it ended so bad it just lost the entire water cooler talk it had. i dont even wanna start it cause of how bad it ends.

It shows off what he's thinking and feeling and has heavy psychological horror elements mirroring "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem".
He's teaching empathy by instilling his own fear into others.

It's so refreshing to meet someone who sees things through the same lens as I do. As in, acknowledges the flaws of a show but also moves past them and values the good things more. People really should be more.. idk, optimistic in their approach to life, it saddens me to see how many folks are filled with vitriol and are ready to mercilessly thrash everything they don't like. Hey, chill out maybe? There is no such thing as a perfect show/album/book etc, because a) it is all purely subjective, b) perfection is something to strive for, but also something that should never be achieved, for if it were achieved once, other creators simply wouldn't be able to compete with it and we would not get any more content.
(sorry for mangled grammar, it's 6 a.m. and I'm hungover)
As for the unsubstantuated hatred towards an undeniable masterpiece, I, as a long-time hardcore Homestuck fan, shall bring up exactly this thing, Homestuck. It's a long-ass (about 8.000 pages, if I recall correctly) webcomic with one of, if not the most complex, complicated and mind-blowing plots of all time, with about a hundred characters which of whom has a clear purpose for the plot, and many of whom have compelling stories and character arcs.
Of course, if you take something as complex as this, it would never escape its fair share of controversy. Is this character handled well or badly, was this subplot necessary or not, oh no, I expected this character to do that instead of this, oh no my OTP is ruined etc. Keep in mind, Homestuck fandom would never be so infamous among the Internet for its toxicity if it wasn't comprised of stupid spiteful teenagers, and stupid spiteful teenagers are rarely able to accept and understand a piece of art as a whole, to really analyze what they read and move past the percieved flaws. So yeah. There was a shit ton of toxicity, heated debates, hatred and haters, death threats from one middle-schooler to another etc. It was only natural that, when other people on the Internet looked at this shitshow, they were quickly to judge and criticize the comic itself even though they had never read it.
Yes, Homestuck is not perfect, it's far from it, because no thing this complex can be perfect; it's like a gemstone - the bigger it is, the more flaws it will unavoidably have. But it is nonetheless a ground-breaking (nay, medium-breaking) multi-faceted masterpiece with hundreds of layers, and it takes years of re-reading and analyzing just to get a gist of it. And understanding how genius it is despite its many flaws, learning to look *past* them is what made it possible for me to see other pieces of art in the way I do, appreciating them and accepting them as a whole. Webcomics such as Tragedy of Fortuna or 17776, shows like Steven Universe or Infinity Train, visual novels such as Ace Attorney are ground-breaking in their own ways, they bring up moral and philosophic questions, they make you think and re-value things in your life and how you look at it, and this alone should be enough to forgive them some underexecuted character arcs here and there.

FINALLY,,, a take I can actually agree with.. I Can accept that the show does have it’s flaws, but when it came to writing it was like fighting tooth and nail so Steven universe wasn’t allowed to have the ending it wanted due to being canceled and given a short amount of episodes to wrap up the story. I know it’s not the satisfying ending we all wished it would be, but maybe things would have been different if Rebecca could actually write the ending she probably intended.

It's funny that you just watched the show, cause I also just checked it out very recently, just this month actually!
It's honestly a really good show! It has a few flaws but like... literally no series is perfect imo.

9:17 Content creators make those video essays picking apart shows of movies for the $$$ (they don't care about the actual content). Hate is a very powerful emotion and getting people riled up and angry is a proven strategy for getting those views and actually getting a viewer to sit through an entire video essay (viewer retention) even if it's a form of media the viewer has no interest in. Not saying it's right, but it works very well and worked historically. It's the same tactic politicians use, news channels use, leaders use to wage war- find an "enemy" and manufacture outrage to get what you want.

I’ve loved steven universe so much as a kid I’ve sometimes said to myself it’s in the big three of cartoons network shows alongside regular show and adventure time after I watched the entire show people say it has problems such as that some characters don’t deserve an immediate redemption or it was rushed but I have accepted that’s what other people think and I do think it has some flaws but it is what it is

So, I thought the "hate" for Steven Universe came from a mix of the dislike for its fanbase, the ending to the original series, and the Future continuation. Never heard of the universal hate you mentioned because most I've seen talk about it seemed to like the series outside of those things.
This is coming from a dude who's seen a handful of the show tops, so take my words with a grain of salt. Just wanted to mention it because my nosy ass watches videos on these "bad" shows often, and it usually ends up being mere aspects of them that the Fandom rightfully dislikes that certain people use to shit on the show entirely. It's like a youtuber making a video about how one episode screws up and someone in the comments going "yeah I never liked this show it sucks and if you like it you suck".

I was under the impression that people loved it. Its full of gay characters and Trama and fusion and shipping and it has movies I couldn't get in to it because of the kitten fists but other people liked it and that was fine. It wasn't getting in the way of me enjoying MY shows. and unlike Naruto, Homestuck and Undertale it wasn't over saturated with posts to the point that my thread on a forum gets pushed to the 3rd page and never read. So I let it run around and do its own thing in the back ground just like Yokai watch or beyblade or Splatoon or Fortnite or TF2 or Halo or Wander over Yonder or Pound Puppies. the shows people loved but I never gave a shot.
Its just its own harmless thing.
As for toxic fandoms I much rather say toxic fans. every show has them but there is no show where the whole fandom is toxic .
any time you say "All" be prepared to be inaccurate there are always acceptations You don't have to let those people in your life. .

  • @dudotolivier6363
    @dudotolivier6363 ปีที่แล้ว +5

A Toxic community is, both :
1 - a community of fans of a specific media that cannot talk to each others on a specific subject without insulting each others in all the possible ways, going often to very hard.
It's often due to the questionable nature of the specific subject from the main media in question, even if small in appearance or actually is small.
It's always a big battle between the side who disagree and the side who agree on if the subject is fine and good, or bad and ugly. For most of the time, it's a ridicule and extreme situation were people battle for a thing who isn't bad and dosen't matter but on which people complains on it.
In these case, the people who complain are a minority and it's them who are in the wrong.
But there several occasions where the subject, even small and insignificant in apearance, is really bad and ugly that the people who complain about it are right and the people who protect and support the subject are a minority and in the wrong, often because they haven't analysed truly deeply the subject and what the latter can give as symbols and messages, and remain on the surface levels who seem to be positive while in reality it's negative.
And since there several subjects inside a same media, there numerous battles as such.
It's even hard when the two side are in a equal position. (the Sonic community is a prime example of it)
2 - a community that complain and destroy completely a media, or a part of him, due to a single element, or some, of it, and don't take into account and forget about all the others elements of the media.
A media can have few bad and quesionable (or not) elements in it, but are few and very scarces compared to the others neutral or positive elements he have along too.
Because of that, the media is underrated, mocked and destroyed completely completely undeserved unfortunately.
However, as said too, a single element can seem looking nice, neutral or good in surface levels, but in reality be completely bad, insulting and reduce highly the quality of the show so he impact more than we think this latter in negatives ways.
And as such, as mentioned before, here the toxic community have right to complain about and to battle against the few people that protect the element thinking is good while haven't really analysed it deeply and remain in the surface level view.
The three show in the thumbnails/Title screen/shot/picture of this video are good depictions of that on differents degrees of both these two definintion of what a toxic comminuty is : (what follow if the general consensus, see universal one in some case, about each shows. That I just relay/retransmit here. Not at all my personnal view of them, I prefer to precise that at the start)
    - Steven Universe : nothing wrong, a great, amazing showthat remain good and keep its quality all along from the beginning to the end. Have yes some weakness, flaws, clumsy moments, and he Epilogue Series, Future is questionable on some points (but all the complains we can made about are due to the behind the scenes probles following the Wedding episode between Ruby and Saphire in the main series, so we must slide and pass on it), but the ultimate consclusion, while not extraordinary (like all show conclusion should do btw in fact) remain correct above the ok line.
    And it's that who matter.
Overall, very, very few people complains about it and the whole show is positively regarded and view as he deserved.
    - Legend of Korra : A show who begin with undeserved complains even before his diffusion, who rise and manage to prove itself despite questionable yet medium things thoughout his duration, and who end up completely deserving theses same complains by becoming uncanny and unwatchable in his last straight lines, in his very last second after a season that was just only shit on his titular characters thus the rest are well treated (ironically).
A good and correct show that became bad by supressing all the good elements that made the titular characters great, likable and identifiable toward many, and reset it entirely and making it another complete different person who become restricted to a small groups of, targeted, people but failed at what it's mean to give because it's symbolic don't make sens in any kind of way and being aslo irrelevant int he same time.
While it's sad how the second show and the entire ATLA franchise have turn out overtime, being fallen at the end of the second series and who never rise again since, it's sadly a truth that the introduction of LGBT stuff and the total, yet useless and not understandable, conversion of the world of the franchise into a rainbow world have signed her death warrant.
The franchise always manage to do and go without such things, being woke, to introduced and put things like that, wasn't on the decline and always had a good run at the season 4 of the second series, have any need to include such things, or never feel to be such world, and anybody on earth from the public and the fanbase don't expected, wanted and asked such stuff onscreen.
Why changing and putting such stuff thus everyone keep watching it as the same level as that was lawyas the case and judge why they see correct without any need of somewhat addition to pick things up ?
Every LGBT stuff that the franchise have did feel hugely woke and forced, and the representations in question are badly, see lazily, handled, and every cases have failed to be above the correct line. All are more insulting to the rainbow community than they are mean to be.
Even if we are technically in a 50/50 equal battle, the complains side is sligthy bigger than the other side who protect the show, thinking because it's LGBT representation that must be positive.
But people who complain have right, that become a mess of a show and who ruined itself and impacted highly badly most ofthe entire franchise itself including the first original show, because it's not because an LGBT representation is a LGBT representation that she's good and positive by any means.
As far I'm aware, there post racists, bad depictions and positives, accurates depiction of specific ethnies. The same thing go for the LGBT depictions.
There are bad LGBT depiction, even if the will at the start was well intentioned, and the good LGBT depictions.
And sadly, every Korra's cases fall into the first category.
And today, most people reconized and agree that the show did terribly wrong and no more is good that he was before. It's not he's underrated at this point, but reconized how he is currently as he is in reality.
The best thing in such case, it's even to not attempt or try something. And everyone will be happy.
(what they did to her hairs is also a good important element in the controversy the final season have created, but that apart another big suject and I already said a lot here).
    - Velma : this show is universally regarded negatively and badly as he deserved. Everyone agree on that.
This Scooby-Doo show (who don't display Scooby-Doo itself) is bad, and suck in everything he want to be. Everything is bad and badly handled, th plot, the characters, the jokes and matures/adults elements.
It's a show who deserved any defense, reconition so he's good at nothing.
Every moment is a pain, the story pass more time on the triangle love plot, that everyone don't care because it's the mystery plot everyone want in a product of the franchise, rather than the mystery plot itself.
The show and the characters are unlikable, the jokes are bads and everything insult and shit/poop on everything at the biggst level : the LGBT comunity, the differents ethnies, the psychological aspects, etc... the list go on.
There any question or discussion to made : it's a 100% bad and dirty show.
So, Velma is at the complete opposite of the spectrum compared to Steven Universe, while LOK is somewhere in the middle.
Whatevers, I think that was a good thing to put the things clear about the subject, about what is what, put things in order. Since it's a very important and sensible topic, and since we must do everything at possible to maintain as lower as possible the toxicity between people, because such thing can lead sadly to accidents if anything to prevent them is made.
Otherwise, that was a good video !
