  • This is the first of a series focusing on making the gears for the Harmonic Analyzer. This video from Bill Hammack shows an original Analyzer developed in the 1890's that I will be attempting to duplicate.

    I picked up an old lathe 16x60 that didn’t come with all the gears I’m in need of and have been searching all types of ways to produce my own, happen to come across your channel. I like the direction you went with this and of course everyone will have a different variation on tweaking processes accordingly to there interests and learned experiences and I enjoyed watching. Thanks for uploading

    I am glad to see you come back with another video. I am reasonably certain that is the same rotary table they sell on ebay. And they sell the dividing plate kits. Harmonic analyzer sure has a ring to the name.

    Paul, I noticed your hat. My grandfather used to have property across the Peshtigo river from Mr Trecker back in the 30's. Thanks for the memomry jog. BTW nice informative video. So much of this knowledge is being lost or going into the underground if you will

      Thanks, Corey,
      I have learned a great deal from some of the You Tube creators that have been at it far longer than I have (Kieth Fenner, Adam Booth, Kieth Rucker, Randy Richards, etc.) Quite a few have K&T horizontal mills and really love them, so a couple years ago, I had the hats made as holiday gifts for them.

    if you run a marker across the mandrill and then run that indicator you had centered across it, should make a line you can line your saw against

    For manual gear making one wants to use a dividing plate. Round holes with a conical index are accurate enough for most gear applications. I'm pretty sure most people that make or made gears will use the dividing head to make the dividing plate that will give them all of their gear increments. Check out this guy's vid.

    Do more than 1 at a time, c-mon... also, I would think about wire edm'ing these and running like 6" long bars unattended at night then throwing on lathe and slicing up... I've done jobs like this before.

    • @maxrunout2989
      @maxrunout2989  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you're way ahead of me. The first series of gears I have to make all have different tooth counts. 20 of them between 6 and 120 teeth. Another set is all 120 teeth and I will do all of them at one time. See later videos in this series to see how I automated the process of making a single gear. I can start it and walk away. Thanks for your comments.

    Harmonic analysis. I'm sure more than one of us viewers is still interested. Hoping you are too.

    • @maxrunout2989
      @maxrunout2989  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I am still working on the harmonic analyzer and should be able to post a video on that subject after the holidays.
      You posted another comment regarding the wiring of the safety cutout switches that I am not able to reply to for unknown reasons. The wiring arrangement you suggest should work. You should test it, though to be sure that tripping any one of the switches immediately stops all motion. Good luck with your project.

      Thanks, Fred. I do subscribe to Clickspring, although I have gotten somewhat behind on viewing. I am pretty excited about this project. The top of the analyzer will probably have to be an aluminum casting. We need to have a chat about that.

    Hi Max. I wonder if you've seen one of these:
    th-cam.com/video/JvJPjugtenI/w-d-xo.html
    I used to teach Fourier stuff at a University, and this was my best ever skip-find, in pieces in the rubbish (trash). I didn't even know what it was when I found it, and when I put it together and realised how relevant it was to my teaching (noise and vibration) it was really exciting.
    Obviously making videos is not my thing!

    • @maxrunout2989
      @maxrunout2989  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Mark. No, I have not seen one of those analyzers and did not know of their existence. I was excited when I ran across Bill Hammack's videos because I had no idea that any kind of mechanical device that could do Fourier analysis existed. Now I find there are at least two!
      I encourage you to do as Bill has done and make more videos about your find. I have just started to do this as well and just stutter and stammer through my videos, but a lot of folks seem to enjoy them and it is a pleasure to share what I can.Thanks for bringing your find to my attention.

      OK, that does it. I am going to invest in an "ah filter" for my microphone. One that also works for "uh". Just watch out for words like upward, they might sound a bit strange.

    • @danielr82
      @danielr82 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love your information, but all of your UHHHS and AND-UHHHs are killing me. You have more of those than the actual content in your speaking. They make it very difficult to listen to you. I'm not going to stop my subscription to your channel, nor turn off the bell. As I said I love your videos. I can as much out of your videos if I simply turn the sound completely off.
