During the years 1945 and the early 60s communism was harsh, untill Gheorgiu Dej cleansed the party of foreign elements such as Ana Pauker.
Then imprisoned fighters were freed, their leader stopped fighting, the Church was not AS opressed anymore, and the life quality got better.
From the early 60s to middle 80s communism was a good thing.

Just because Communism improved doesn't mean that it was successful.
I don't know about the history of the Romanians, but I do know that even though Khrushchev was leaps and bounds of a better premier of the Soviet Union than Lenin and Stalin, that he still did terrible things like have people dissatisfied with his reign put into insane asylums to be subjected to experimental treatments like shock therapy to "fix" their dissatisfaction with Communism.
It wasn't a pretty picture.
