I moved to Sunderland from western NYS in 1973 and loved the Nail!!! My favorite band around that time was the James Montgomery Blues Band. They would end their night with an encore performance of The Train with James wailing on the harp. OMG! What great memories! Thanks for posting this.
I lived (still do) a few towns over and the Nail was a favorite destination. I turned 18 in 1974 and the drinking age was 18 at the time. I had to sneak in before that. I wasn't much of a drinker so that wasn't my concern but turning 18 made it much easier. great times!
Was at The Nail all the time as a UMASS, ahem, "student". Dixie Dregs, King Sunny Ade, Muddy Waters, Toots and the Maytals, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Max Creek, Total Electric Living. Made out with a bunch of girls in cars in the parking lot there. Good Stuff. I had two stints at UMASS. I came back in September 1985 to start the second stint only to find my old haunt gone. I could still hear the music and smell the beer-soaked wood.
FYI: There's bonus material at the end of a 1982 Neighborhoods tape (Blue Wall at UMASS), with Echo and the Bunnymen tacked on. I recall the Echo show was shot with a single camera, BW video, by a friend (Allison Marx now Allison Strine) at The Rusty Nail. I worked for The Union Video Center back in the day and the Hoods/Echo tape got heavy airplay on our little two monitor cable system in the Student Union. If you look for the " The Neighborhoods (Tim Green - bassist) The Blue Wall early-1982" here on youtube, you'll find the Echo footage there. -Actually there's a direct link via Echo & The Bunnymen - Live in Sunderland (1981). Great audio quality!
There were two knots of parties at The Nail. The parties you cant remember and the parties you'll never forget. Often ended up there Thursday night thru Sunday night some weeks. The entertainment was tops.
In 82 saw both the Go Go's and Billy Idol. The next year I saw the Go Go's at Boston Garden and Billy Idol at the Music Hall in Boston. Rusty Nail shows were ten times better!
Among others we saw The Searchers in '83, The Average White Band on a Friday AND a Saturday night, warming up for an American Tour and the sad end of McGuinn, Clark and Hillman, Gene Clark having gone his own way and Chris Hillman wearing a button "Can't we just get this over with?"........George Guttler
I did one of my first light shows for a band called Bratt there...their mgr came in to watch...saw the lights and wanted to know who set them up.....guess he was impressed...did their lights for yrs after that full time....
Robin Trower, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and of course Fat are a few of the bands I seen at the Rusty Nail. Connecting Point how about doing something on the Woodrose Ballroom that was in South Deerfield seen many bands there as well.
Was lucky to see the Ramones and Johnny Winter there, with my lifelong friend and band mate Mikey. Unforgettable memories.

went there MANY times and have always been grateful to have had my youth in that era.
Saw Muddy Waters, Matt Guitar Murphy, and James Cotton at the Nail in '81-'82. Didn't know that I had it so good.
