- The cast and creatives behind Severance sit down to unpack the fourth episode of Season 2 "Woe's Hollow" for Inside the Episode. In this edition, they detail the intricacies of filming outside of the Lumon headquarters and MDR's character development.
Severance Season 2 - New episodes Fridays. apple.co/_Sever...
In Severance, Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in “work-life balance” is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself.
In season two, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe.
Season 2 reunites its ensemble cast of stars including Emmy Award nominee Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Dichen Lachman, Emmy Award winner John Turturro, Academy Award winner Christopher Walken and Academy and Emmy Award winner Patricia Arquette, and welcomes new series regular Sarah Bock.
Severance is executive produced by Ben Stiller, who also directs five episodes this season in addition to directors Uta Briesewitz, Sam Donovan and Jessica Lee Gagné. The series is written, created and executive produced by Dan Erickson. Severance season two is also executive produced by John Lesher, Jackie Cohn, Mark Friedman, Beau Willimon, Jordan Tappis, Sam Donovan, Caroline Baron, Richard Schwartz, Nicholas Weinstock. Im glad they didnt drag out the Helly/Helena thing.
IKR people commenting constantly their opinions left and right. I had a gut instinct it WAS Helena all along. Anyway, I am glad as well!
What if Helena being introduced into Lumon and all this ORTBO fassade was just to facilitate Mark impregnate Helena? That's why Mark was most important to them.
This show is really good at keeping things moving. Every episode is like a season finale. Any other show would have had the helly thing and mark reintegration be a season long arc.
@@jacobg2662 A lot more shows could stand to go watch The Vampire Diaries and how it has consistently relentless pacing.
@ It's okay to have an opinion. That's the beauty of the show. I wanted it to be Helly R., but how do they bring her back after revealing her outie is an Egan?
That Milchick actor is so darned good. Dude seems like a kind, friendly person in real life. There’s nothing about his attitude in this video that should be off putting.
And I still feel my skin crawl when he laughs at the evil of lumen, he’s just so good at it.
He is indeed a very sweet guy, that’s Mr. Milkshake for you
Even in the show, he plays an extremely well role as simultaneously having the facade of a warm and protective supervisor whilst you can just catch a glimpse of a hardliners enforcer, which makes it all the better when that comes out, like in the end of the episode
He’d never admit it but I think he does care about the Inies also don’t think he’s a fan of Helena
@ I mean… he did say he considered the innies his friends to a few of the outies. I do think he means it yeah.
There was that scene with mark’s innie where he said he’s not severed so he has to carry around what he does at work to the outside world, and he says it in a regretful way.
He just knows how to make his eyes kind.
This one really certified Irving as the GOAT. My god, he definitely have a wild outie!
let's eat it!
Honestly, I think his outie will pull just as hard for the innies as his innie. We saw him obsessing over stories about Severance gone wrong and of course his dark vision of the elevator. Now he's about to wake up in the wilderness surrounded by terrified Lumon employees, to be informed by a self-righteous man he was fired. This outie is about to take the whole operation DOWN. Pineapples won't save them this time...
@@minetruly I actually think the paintings of the elevator are actually Outer Irving trying to seed his subconsciousness, by painting the same thing over and over and over, in order for it to manifest to Inner Irving.
@@minetruly it seems likely they must have some third mental state they can put people into, otherwise the outies would have had to consciously be taken out to those starting locations at the beginning which feels like a stretch
“Helly was never cruel”
I bet Helena only felt regret for being cruel because she felt like she might’ve blown her cover. She’s was probably happy to let her guard down and finally rip into poor Irv in an adolescent fashion.
That and telling the worst lie. I mean she had 2 days to make a lie and she went with night gardner
I enjoyed how she couldn’t hold back her laughter at the lore being told to scare the innies, and the quiet reveal of her possible true feelings that she made to Mark in the tent.
She was probably made at him for running her plan to get mark into her tent
@atulrcks glad someone said, that was why I always had doubts it was Helena, I would have thought she would have lied better
Yeah...
Yeah, we all knew, and yet, it was still an absolute thrill to see Irving figure it all out and pull back the curtain in such a brutal but satisfying way. And a really nice surprise to see how much he put together, figuring out that Helena was also an Eagan? Brilliant! Will miss you Irving!
He probably already knew, his outie has been investigating lumon so he would know who the big names are
@@jacobdenness8659 No, we saw in the episode that he didn't know she was an Eagan up until the last day. Before he just sensed that something was off about her but only that day he put all pieces together.
He knew exactly that she was an outtie once he said to her “Hey Kid” . In season 1 Hellie would say “what’s for dinner “. Once he didn’t get that response he knew right there and then it was the outtie
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849yeah Irving pieced together that the only type of person who would be able to go in and be a mole the whole time, is an Eagan
@@jacobdenness8659 i thought he figured it out because of the weird dream he had where the MDR numbers spelled out EAGAN and morphed into helena's face?
When Irv said "Hey Kid" and she didn't say what's for dinner?
oooooh good catch
in season 1, she always say that?
@@HFXmermaid ohhhh I knew there was a reason he said it
I don't think Irv continued that saying after Mark S. became manager.
I thought "kid" was in reference to a child of Eagan (a family he respects and studies), or a close pronunciation of "Kier" for dramatic effect, or just recognizing the age difference between the two of them. 🤷♂️
I loved Irv telling Dylan to hang in there. The poster from the security room. He wants him to bring him back.
Wow, that’s very insightful! I really hope your right 🤞
I bet he has hidden some clues on the back side of the poster
Ooooh great theory
@@Lia_L. interesting thought but we’ve never seen Irv in the security room have we? So I don’t think he would have had an opportunity to write on the back of the poster
@@joycewilliams7458 hmm I was just thinking…do you remember if Dylan told Irv about the cat poster?
Poor Dylan having to endure the sounds of baby goats all night from the other tent
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Very funny 😄 I hope he brings it up next episode
Omg this comment is literally on every video relating to this episode. This exact comment.
I don't get it
@@athandog idk how you're seeing it on every video i only commented on 3
RIP Irving B... the literal Goat! 🐐
Now that Irving’s gone there’s no clue for the innies where the exports hall is and they won’t know to ask Felicia about it
@@damian_madmansnest I think he must've left them some kind of clue or something. Him saying "hang in there" to Dylan definitely felt like a hint.
@@damian_madmansnestnow maybe outie Irving can find a way to help them, especially with Mark reintegrating
I find it ridiculous that he didn't kill Milchick.
Wow, the cast is just exemplary. John Turturro and Britt Lower absolute rock stars in this show, and this episode. "Yes, do it Seth!" The vitriol in that line will stay with me for a while. I Have been a big Turturro fan since the 80's so this was just candied crack in a hot air balloon.
It's funny to go back and see Turturro as the comical Agent Simmons in the transformers films now
People upset about Mark’s reintegration not having a bigger splash this episode probably forgot that Petey was reintegrated for at least 2 weeks in season 1, and still only had periodic glimpse of his memories. Give it time, this episode also served a more important pressing issue imo.
Anyone upset about reveal doesn’t understand dramatic irony, which the show used very well. Yes most of the audience knew already, but the fun in that is rooting for the characters to find out too. Irving suspecting from the start and continuing to question Helena when the chance was available was great.
This episode didn't really happen, it was all a dream happening while Mark was being reintegrated...
It looks like most of the upset people they really do not understand deeper meaning of anything. No offense of course but it is like it is. This show is really something else, not just like ordinary show. Open-minded viewing is required.
I am in utter shock after seeing the episode… this is some masterful stuff
I haven't seen it yet so now I really gotta see it.
@@crazyaces4042bro why are you on this video spoiling yourself if you haven’t seen it 😭
What are you shocked about exactly? It was high drama but nothing shocking was revealed lol
@@TheSpaniard you’re not wrong but it’s more of how we’re only 4 episodes in and there are major implications that may change up the whole dynamic of the show if they’re true that shocked me

Is nobody gonna talk about that UNDERWATER zolly shot on Helena/Helly?
insane, they did the lens transition underwater.
It reminds me underwater fight scene from Blade Runner 2049
They talk about it in the official podcast. Great scene that took extra work.
@@NEKORID pretty sure it's a glass tank and the camera is under the glass tank, at some point I had the impression she put her face too close to the glass
On the podcast Ben said it's a tank with a diver operating the camera.
I am confident that Irving is not out of the board yet as he can be already reintegrated and we just didn't know it before him coming back to Lumon after OTC. We didn't know what actually happened when he knocked on Bert's door in ending of S1. He also looks kinda smug when looking back at Milkshake which he usually idolizes, like he already knows something...
@@jeanharoldmagnait8928 tbh after last season ended he probably knows not to idolize lumon (or at least he pretends knowing he's being watched )
"may have" is definitely a specific choice of words by dan erickson in this video - we have to assume turturro isn't entirely out of the equation now, but we'll have to see how he appears from now on.
It does sound like in the end that they performed a deletion on Irving. Maybe he will come back as an outie at some point.
What a writer Dan Erickson is. To think this his first project… unreal
I know! I'm always in such awe, of how lucky we are that he managed to break out, and get this creation from his head to the screen.
Irv is actually a hero, he gave his life so Helly R could have hers
Yeah great point
The way Helena was talking about IrvinG in 3rd person - like any other non-severed person in Lumon about innies. That was a good detail ;)
A lot of people are talking about the reveal finally happening, but I thought the Eagen stuff was really interesting, the family literally has a national park, there's clones or robots of the innies, Kier had a twin, possibly tying into the clone stuff.
Nothing that comes out of Milkshake's mouth should be counted as true, including this "national park". All he does is lie.
How much of it is really true though?
@IndianGeek5589 It's less about how much of it is true but rather what the meaning is and how it influenced Lumon
Those definitely were not clones, the faces were not like them at all, I want to believe they were just balloons or sum lol
@@Deather2012 It could also be tied into the simulation theory, that the whole national park isn't actually real, probably explains how those things were able to move around the place
✅ Intense
✅ In a tent
*In tents
@@Ionic457 oh idk it was much more intense in one particular tent
This was their first time sleeping. Idk why they didn’t make it a bigger deal
That's true!
Irv has slept before--he was nodding off and having dreams during the first season.
Poor Irving! He deserves so much better.
There was no elevator ding when Irving got sent to "the eternal dark", which makes me and many others think that Irving had already reintegrated and is in full control over his outie and innie. We shall see!
There was no elevator ding cause he wasn’t in the elevator…..
@@hastyscorpionthey still did the elevator ding with Helena when she was underwater
After this episode I just want to shout out that this show is one of the best things happened in my life. Thanks to everyone who create this masterpiece.
Don't know why everyone says it was obvious that it was Helena. It wasn't to me. I thought Helly was ashamed that she was an Egan. Only until I read online that I saw that the Helena theory was a thing and even then I was unsure because I could see it being either way.
i have the brain of an ant I literally dont read dont like to read and failed dozens times my class in school and college idk how people does not notice I consider myself actually really dumb and mostly amazed how came up by intricate deep theories of people on reddit BUT NOT NOTICING SHE WAS HELLENA huh??!! actually perplexed and really surprised when the show gives u at your hand
she lies she describe normal things as normal in her lie
she cant press the on button
and she says we have to work??
shes literally so much different in the 3 episodes she not savage she not pedantic she not wild
The woman who tried to hang herself feel shame for being the boss? why would Helly play along when no one could tell her what to do on the severered floor?
It's so much less interesting for all the discussion to be "haha knew it" instead of discussing the small choices that read differently based on whether she was Helly or Helena. The most shocking part of the episode to me was when Helena told Mark in the tent she was ashamed of who she was on the outside, and for him to say he doesn't care who she is on the outside, only to immediately learn she was Helena. Plenty of moments where it could've swung either way
Most these people are part of online discussions that dissect the whole show, so they figure out the twists earlier than normal viewers. I had my suspicions and was fun going back and forth during the episode about why Helley seemed a bit off.
@@willkramer9717 is not haha knew it, its how u so oblivious ?
The show made twists through the show but this time deliberately say to us who she is
Amazing episode! John Turturro was fantastic!
He really was next level.
“Don’t F with the Jesus.”
I'm not saying this episode was life changing...but I did wake up a different person today.
tallest waterfall lol
Lol
I frickin knew that was Minnewaska! I grew up there. So cool to see upstate new york represented to the world on the small screen!
I like how drowning was foreshadowed in episode 1 with the pineapple bobbing scene.
Especially because Helly in the stop motion animation actually had her hands in handcuffs when she was bobbing for pineapples!
I've known John Turturro has been an absolutely stellar actor for decades, but this performance took my breath away.
Tramell Tillman's is a revelation, absolutely phenomenal. And his smile at the end the interview is angelic.
This show delivers episode after episode.
we knew who she was the entire time. it was all the subreddit talked about lol
glad they didn't drag it out like most shows would
Yep. I guess this bit was recorded before S02E01 got aired... It was obvious since S02E01 that most of the fans knew the """""twist""""".
@@sethmeyer2443 episode was still a little underwhelming for how much reviewers specifically talked about this episode being a complete game changer. Considering the show, I was hoping for something none of us would’ve seen coming.
Kinda disappointed it was as it seemed odd no one was seeing how it could have be Helly R. She 100% played Helly R this episode the most just to…

Irving is a true gentleman and a gangster.
A rare breed of man these days.
It would be an amazing plot twist if Irv happened to be reintegrated like Mark is, hence not being able to rewert back to his outie after Milkshake calls them to press the button.
This was THE scariest episode of the show so far
OMG this show. I've hear it's the best thing people have seen this year. That's such a disservice. This is one of the best things in terms of television i have and will ever see.
untill yesterday when recommending Severance to friends and colleagues I used to say "this might shape up to be the best show of the decade" (after Mr. Robot being the best of the 2010s). As of today this is an all time number 1 contender. Masterful storytelling, acting, character work, directing and tension building.
@memento81 Mr robot is certainly up there. For me Breaking Bad was the all time no.1. And now it has some company in that spot. I think what defines breaking bad and severance as best. Is when I get to watch it every week. It builds excitement, appreciation for the content. I didn't do that with Mr robot. And for me it's always how it makes me feel. And no matter how good or robot was, because I binged it. I became numb while watching episode after episode. The weekly shows is the way to do it for me. Really increases enjoyment.
@ for the top tier shows that deserve to savored and chewed on while waiting for the next episode that is definately true. So happy we are getting another big one deserving of that ☺
I have been recommending this show since March 2022, when the only people watching it and talking about it on twitter were me, ten lesbians, a handful of critics, and ben stiller. FINALLY it’s getting its flowers
@justinhamilton8647 I binged last season cos I came to the party quite late. Still had to wait 2 years though. And I thought it was very good, but I hadn't cons8dered it being the best until this season. What defines it for me is. When I watched breaking bad, it was a cultural phenomenon. Me and my friends would grab beer and watch breaking bad like you would a sports game. The excitement that show brang was unequalled. Until now.
Severance team really said: You want Pine Barrens? Hold my freakin’ marshmallow.
he was an innie decorator
This is the episode that made me want to plug out of theorizing and discussion. It was clearly a ‘game changer’ for critics who watched in advance because they went in blind didn’t pick up the Helly twist but for someone who’s been engaged in ‘discourse’ and screen grabs online etc. it sort of dulled the impact of the episode for me. Maybe it’s just me being a less sophisticated viewer but I don’t think I would’ve noticed Helly was Helena if I hadn’t had that outside input, and I want to preserve my experience for the future. So no reaction pods or Reddit posts or tweets for me in future lol
same
That's what I always do when I catch a show I really like. I disconnect from all discussions until the episode comes out. I'm glad I got this twist without getting spoiled. amazing!
you've encapsulated all my thoughts. I didn't suspect it was Helena until I started watching these review videos. Even then, I was still doubting, but the number of people saying it made me believe I was in the wrong. Better to keep our innocence going forward. After all, we watch it for ourselves
This show brings me back to the Game of Thrones time and i love it. Searching for theories, the excitement before an episode comes out or when you know you have to wait for another week for the next one ! It's just pure peak tv ! The rythm of the show and its cliffanghers are masterfully crafted and I trust the writers and director blindly to lead us to more epic revelations and situations ! Plus, the four main caracters are so endearing, they make a perfect cast ! Haven't felt so compelled to a show in years, hope they don't drag the show along for more that it needs but still don't want it to stop too soon !
I've seen many times- Helly looked fresh and innocent, while Helena's complexion looked a bit darker and expressions looked a bit contorted. When Irving was talking to Helena in the tent, her expressions were like in the episode before with Cobel, telling her about hubris, arrogance. Helena is so intimidating, I really like this and Britt Lower's acting. Another thing is, I saw a post about Irving getting killed. I can't imagine watching Severance without Irving, I don't want him to go. I think Irving is the closest to my heart for some reason I can't detect.
Don't worry, there's still outie!Irving who has been investigating Lumon for some time, he's not going to accept being fired without answers. We'll definitely be seeing him again. I also love Irving the most, John Turturro is just fantastic in everything he's in.
@@matcha_t Nice to know you like Irving too! I suspected they would kill outie Irving as well, because that post said John Tuturro will leave the show after season 2. I'm glad he'll still be in the show, hopefully throughout the whole show. I relate more with outie Irving with what I've seen so far, and want to know more about him. Thanks for your comment and letting me know! ❤
"You don't doubt for a second that it's Helly" lmao
That shot of the sun going down through the trees was really beautiful.
What I love about this show is how it rewards you for paying attention but also still makes you feel like its earned. My friend and I predicted this episode one the moment helly lied and we still were shook by that reveal.
one of the best episodes of television I've ever seen.
Also I really love that they went outside and had fun. It feels really nourishing to spend some time in nature. Having fun and hanging out is just perfect ❤
it was obvious she was Helena ever since we saw her look wanting to feel what her innie felt when she kissed mark
or the moment she stepped of that elevator. she was not comfortable being touched. She has been abused and emotionally neglected, probably mostly psychologically like most children of the elite. Helly R. had none of those hang-ups. Such great acting by this group.
@@420Sportz honestly the first episode wasn't a given to me, I could see the reasons for lying about what she saw without instantly jumping in "nope, that's Helena", neither the second one as it's just a prequel, it wasn't until the third episode were it was very obvious that it was Helena
I wonder if she’s taking berth control
Helly was the one to kiss mark, I think he's usually more shy, but there were so many moments that hellena looked to mark and got close to him as if she were waiting for him to kiss her, and he just thought it was weird/didn't notice (probably because in his mind Helly just kissed him and if she'd want to she'd do it again)
I thought it was pretty obvious that it was Helena right from the first episode. I feel like Helly would absolutely tell her coworkers that her outie is an executive in the company, no matter how ashamed she may feel because of it
💯 🎉
would they still trust helly if she would tell them her outy is an eagan?
I need ep 5 right now

Another amazing episode! What was up with those twins though? I had to suspend my disbelief that none of the team would go up to a doppelgänger of themselves to investigate. They didn’t even talk about them?
“You don’t doubt for a second that it’s Helly, but then if you go back and rewatch it you’re gonna see all kinds of things that are perceptible only to someone who knows” ermmm people called it since episode one 💀
no way that was meant to be a twist 😭😭 not a single person thought that was helly
I was hoping for our favorite song intro. They did this to us in the first episode. Ironically, the first episode was as explosive as this one. Guess I’ll have to play it on Apple Music and wait until next episode. 😭
Loved this episode. Slow burn (adding fire- nice touch) with a major plot point twist! It was watching moving art. The black/white/gray instead of the reds & blues…..simply loved this episode.
I mean, it wasn't such a big twist. We all knew or at least suspected that Helly was Helena. But the way Irving pieces it all together and reveals it was very satisfying. From what we've seen, Mark is still not fully reintegrated, far from it. Outie Irving will have a role to play for sure. He seemed to know things and the paintings are still unexplored. I expect Mark to contact him once the outie part of himself starts remembering him. An exceptional episode!
I cried after I finished this episode 😭
id watch every episode if it was out right now
This episode was special. I hope there's more like it. ❤
"only perceptible to a person who knows,"

I LOVE THIS SHOW
Kind of interested in the fact that there has to be a companion episode to this since it begins on Irving shifting from outie to innie. Why show that unless you’re going to show us how he got on the ice in the first place?
So this entire episode was a dream sequence.
They tipped their hand a little too far by her lying about her outie memory. It put too many of us on guard.

I think everyone knew it was Helena, rather than Helly…
We doubted it since the first time we saw Helly/Helena again. 😭
So technically… we saw Irving’s death 😢
I think Helena, after a while, will feel true connection in there with her co-workers rather than i the real world with her father etc., so she then somehow change team and becomes connected to them instead of the company.
1:50 bro's smile is scary even in real life 💀
It was not a secret for the audience that Helen is inside, not Helly. Whowever, MDR didn't know that, so that was a big reveal indeed - for Mark, Dylan and Irv
Masterpiece!
3:34 You sure about that?
Idea: The last episode had Irving looking for the testing floor. What if the testing floor puts innies through simulations for the upper management to determine what they are thinking? In this case, Irving revealed he knows Helly's identity, so they would have basis to fire him in the next episode (explaining the "tragic loss" in the episode description).
It's like when you let your indoor cat go outside when it's snowing, they think being outside is always awful, and want to go out less.
