Anyone else wish they would bring back the "Transatlantic Trophy"? great format and a joy to ride to all the different races at all the different venues.
Sheene...Hunt... WE loved these fellows. They weren't PC., they weren't pouffs they were boys with the world at their feet and deserved to enjoy it because they made it happen and they entertained us enormously
Thankyou for sharing this, I watched with tears in my eyes as the amazing Barry Sheene wins again, with such style, Im 52, glued to world of sport whenever Barry raced, he is a hero of mine to this day. It just isnt the same without the #7 Sheene bike .Its been a long time since I watched bike racing, .Thankyou for the impact you had on my life..RIP to The Man who brought joy to so many people and Big Love to his family. Deeply missed
stuntweasel27 think about him every day, I think he would have been bigger now, than in his riding days had he lived, the worlds never been able to fill the hole he lived, and left.
I rode down on my Harris tweaked Honda CB250G5 - the bike my mates all told me not to buy. It was very quick and handled great thanks to upgraded and preloaded front springs, Girling rear shocks and Avon Roadrunners. Barry inspired us all to ride faster on the way home. Crazy days. Over 40 years ago! Bloody hell. Where did the time go?
what a true british champion the famous NO 7 i have been a despatch rider since 1979( first rode 1976) as a young bike i went all over the country not for the racing just to watch barry sheene and the racing BARRY INSPIRED ME SO MUCH that i ended up completing 2 MILLION MILES ON A MOTORCYCLE MY RIDER NUMBER was always 27 as there was only ever one NO 7 r i p barry sheene from stevethebreeze MANCHESTER,S 2 MILLION MILE MOTORCYCLE COURIER R.I.P BAZZA
Beautiful memories,a jeans jacket T250 Suzi, Brands, Mallory, etc, Robert, Romero, Baker, Aldana,,Hennen, Sheene,Grant, Dichburn, fantastic races, and don’t stop playing (I sold my ‘63 335 Gibson still with couple of Fender and a Takamine) lovely video, keep well .
followed the Transatlantic all over the country, always great racing from us and theYanks...........really great times and you could meet the stars and walk round the pits!!! Imagine being able to do that now!! RIP BAZ....you legend
brilliant footage many thanks. Great to see my old hero Barry going well, but a fabulous ride from Aldana who probably shouldnt have been competitive in that race. Great to see Tom Herron, and Dave Potter both lost so soon afterwards. Hard men, Tom goes into unprotected armco a races later in the day!
So pleased I found this upload after I found my copy of the original race programme as I was at this, my first Motorcycle race meeting with my pals. We rode up on our respective Suzuki GT500 Yamaha RD350B
Cool racing. I love the randomly spaced straw bales at Stirling! That armco looks very hard! These were the days the Red Arrows did air displays below crowd level at Brands! I saw Barry at Silverstone at the GP in 79. What a great race that was. A real showman and great rider.
jonnyspurdog Yes I remember looking down from the bank at Clearways to watch the Red Arrows as they did their opposition manoeuvre down in the short circuit bowl. Amazing stuff.......
Looks like Tom Herron's engine "nipped up" as there was smoke from the rear tyre before he crashed , RIP Tom who was later killed in the North West 200 in May 1979 .
I saw Dave Aldana at Brands Hatch, here in the UK back in the late 70's riding for the American Superbike team against the British Superbike team.He wore black leathers with a white skeleton painted on them.He had been banned from using them in the US by the AMA. The US won the race easily.
@@davidknowles3459 Dave was a real character like Barry. A different time. After that race at Willow Springs I went and chatted with him. Talked about watching him race in England at the Trans Atlantic races. Great time, fun days, fantastic memories. We shook hands and smiled.neither he or I won that race if I remember I came 5th on a Suzuki Katana and Dave 6th on a Honda Hurricane. Could have been the other way around. But I remember seeing Aldana on the back of his leathers and that spurred me on. Never raced with Barry, but did get past by him and Kenny Roberts at Paddock bend in open practice. Those were the days.
i was there , the Trans Atlantic match races were awesome , as an 18 y/o it could,nt get better ,the support races , MT125 , 250 ,350 , F1 were brilliant , i remember the 350 races had at least 4 qualifying runs , most also ran a 351cc in the 500,s as well , such a great era in racing..
As a teenager these races were a huge event to me and my mates,. We lived near to the circuit and used to go on practice days, we could happily Visit the pits and the mechanics and riders would talk to us. Amazing to have had relatively free access to our heroes like Barry Sheene and King Kenny, Ron etc great to see this, great days when life was simple and happy👍😀
I loved the transatlantic races. I used to marshal at Oulton Park and would take my Laverda Jota around the track before the races and in between races. Great times indeed 👍
Just as an aside... I've been a motorcycle nut my whole life, my father owned a Honda and Bultaco dealership in southern California and I idolized guys like Dave Aldana. Fast forward to last week, June 10th, 2024... I had moved way across the country to a little town of less than 20,000 people called Fayetteville, Georgia. I went to a neighborhood meeting of conerned homeowners who are trying to stop the installation of a powerline through our backyards... I recognized one man in the audience.. hmmm who is it? I went up and asked.. IT'S DAVE ALDANA!!! REALLY!!! We now live only 2 miles apart... Weird, small world!!!
The world championships didn't have as many rounds then so we saw amazing riders like King Kenny, Steve Baker, Gary Nixon, Freddie Spencer, Yvonne Du Hammel, Cal Rayborn and Pat Hennen appearing. Moto America under Wayne Raineys influence just beginning to raise the profile of road racing Nort America and nurture world class riders.
If this is Sheene on 652cc suzi. Then he will be down on hp cos others were on 750's. The 652 was actually a bored-out rg500 essentially. I think the suzi 750 just wasn't quick enough so they came up with this. I went to a few Trans-trophy meets at brands. Best one for me was when the riders had to ride BSA Rocket 3's Triumph Tridents, Great days. So glad to see this. Thanks for uploading.
When you consider the much better tires and suspension of today's bikes, these old races are particularly interesting. My first high performance street bike was a 1981 CB900F.
Those RG652s were as exotic as they come back then. I was watching early morning practice at the rise from paddock to druids and Sheene would make up yards on any ride in front. A special bike for a very special rider.
Never forgot meeting Tom Heron at the Earls Court motorbike show in maybe 73? (Well my memory isn't that good) It has stuck with me, he made an impression on me for sure. Sad when he went.
Kenny Roberts had been injured, in the January I think, when he crashed whilst testing in Japan and broke his back !! He missed the first 500 GP race of the season but still managed to secure his second title.
A lot of people would still go if the organisers could be bothered to provide decent toilets,I first went to Mallory in 72 thro.. to the mid 80 ,s no facilities at all went back in 92 and guess what couldn’t even pee in a hedge what a complete shit house! not been to short circuit since.Philw
Sheene's longer exhausts were because the motor was taken out to 680 to try to be on lvel pegging with Americans on 750,s at the Trans Atlantic event..
Used to follow all the Transatlantic races, we'd ride up to the circuits from s.e. Essex with the bird and tent on the back of the bikes, happy days. A time when the TV channels showed us sport programmes instead of the f*****g football we have to suffer which makes me turn it off !
Sheene is riding the RG680 Suzuki, the big version of the usual RG500, as a personal project, the RG680 was developed after Sheene commissioned a big engine by Barton the raced engine builders of Wales, with the evidence that it could be done, Sheene insisted the Japanese factory should build the factory RG680
We used to go and watch the trans Atlantic series, I think Dave Aldana had black leathers with a skeleton on at some point. I can't remember the format and I think it known as a triangular series. I seem to remember that they were held at 3 tracks and over a bank holiday? Can anyone with a better memory than me shed any light?
A bit late replying, but I remember seeing Dave wearing the Skeleton Leathers at Brands, can't remember the exact year, but must have been late 70's. I think he may have been riding for Suzuki at the time, but I'm pretty sure I've seen him on a Norton at Brands and Mallory as well. Great rider, popular with the crowd. I remember one meeting where his gearbox became jammed in one of the lower gears, and instead of retiring, he circulated at the best speed he could manage, popping huge wheelies out of Druids every lap. They were great days with some great riders. I'm glad to have been there.
To see Tom Herron bouncing off everything including a steel fence then compete in a later race the same day, they where tough guys!
Anyone else wish they would bring back the "Transatlantic Trophy"? great format and a joy to ride to all the different races at all the different venues.
It was a true sport back then, too much money involved in all sport now!
@@rustynail5812 It would be Brutal...:)
Wish they would bring back the 2 strokes as well! : )
I wish they would bring back the Hutchinson 100 - a race that was anti-clockwise round Brands. I marshalled a couple of these.
Sheene...Hunt... WE loved these fellows. They weren't PC., they weren't pouffs they were boys with the world at their feet and deserved to enjoy it because they made it happen and they entertained us enormously
I'm so glad I'm of an age where I was able to see these guys in the flesh so to speak. RIP Barry, you were a true hero!
im a 55 year old grandad and i'll admit to being in tears watching this RIP Bazza.
More than 40 years ago and I still get nervous watching it. Baz, the GOAT
Those were the days...watching a British rider fight his way to the front. Barry Sheene was a superb rider. Thank you for posting this.
