    Been painting for about a year now, and for the past 2 days I have been really struggling to get a good gradient wash. The tutorial I followed said to wet your page first (as most do) but I either ended up with bands of colour or just a flat wash. So I decided to watch a simple tutorial and practice. Your different examples were really helpful and as you concluded, starting from a dry page gives the best results, for me anyway. Thank you!

    I really like the simple painting application at the end. I think it's super helpful to have little exercises like that. I wonder could you do a tutorial on this same thing, graded washes, but within a drawn shape that you are trying to fill, instead of having tape or the paper's edge. It seems a bit harder when you can't just swipe all the way over across the area.

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I really enjoy learning the skills from you. I have a little tip for painting wash. I hope you don’t mind I share it here. When the weather is hot or using hot pressed watercolour paper, it’s difficult to keep the area open. I found by using watercolour slow drying medium (it’s made by A J Ludlow) could keep the area open longer. It’s easy to use. I used the slow drying medium instead of water to the areas. It helped me to create even wash. I hope it could help more people to overcome the problem.

    I liked #2 the best! You're such a good sub. Actually, they're all useful: I can see the makings of trees in numbers 3 and 4! Alizarin's my favorite (with indigo and raw umbers): I've tried something like this with different pigments (several brands) and find some "misbehaving" paints seem to play by rules of their own, too 😂 and not just the multi-pigment paints. Ie: potter's pink (Schminke brand). That one is lovely but seems to make up rules as it goes along! -and that's okay, too.
    I least like flat washes with phthalos because they're so staining (and a famous yellow pigment I can't recall offhand, also Schminke though) that when doing the wash, one teensy driplet of water from a stubborn bristle of a size 12 brush will cause a super bloom! File that under #CarefulWithStainingPigments and #WhyILoveViridian 😂❤️

    Thanks for your great teaching skills . Your wash tutorials are the best I've seen. What mistakenly causes thin white lines to sometimes go across a wash esp. graded ones? I'm thinking it might have something to do with too much water in the brush going across and lifting all the paint on that line - esp. in the graded washes. Any advice appreciated! Thanks again so much for sharing your talent and in a way that all can understand and be motivated by.

    • @LouiseDeMasi
      @LouiseDeMasi  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure Patty- I haven't noticed any white lines like that. Could it be the brush you are using? Maybe a softer or newer brush might help. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    This is the best gradated wash tutorial I have found, after watching over 20. Thank you.
    One question: my top section gets diluted, and it’s hard for me to get it super intense / masse tone without getting it muddy. If I go back after the first wash, I always leave a line (even if the paint is damp). Is there a best approach?

    • @LouiseDeMasi
      @LouiseDeMasi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I'm glad it's useful to you. if you are using tube paints try squirting out some freshly squeezed pigment and mix some water with that rather than trying to re-wet pigment that has hardened on your palette. I find when I used fresh pigment I can get a deep colour more easily. It's best not to go back in and fuss with the wet wash if you can help it.

    But only before 14:35 when a quick practice started and it was too fast to be useful. Speeding up a recording in my opinion always ruins any painting demo.

      Hi Kimm, It's not blurry. You may have the quality settings on the video set too low. Click on the little circular icon that looks like a gear on the bottom right of the video. You'll see a pop up menu appear. Go to 'Quality' and click on it. Then select 1080p. That should make it better for you.
