Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.
My husband and I bought twelve acres with a modular home that had to be totally renovated for $40k. We did all of the renovation ourselves and had the land and home paid off in two years. Now we have a beautiful homestead with livestock. We are living a peaceful life, debt free.

You two are an inspiration! I plan to work two more school years (work in a school) and save money to get it started on some family property. I am 50 now and found out I have a heart condition back in May and tired of working and still feeling broke and unsatisfied with life. I don't want to retire in 17 years and die 2 months after and not enjoy what life I have left. I am a single woman and my hands and body are not what they used to be but I have all the determination a person could need. Fingers crossed this plan goes as planned. :)
Wife and I are finally going to live this dream in Algonquinish area of Ontario. At age 49 and 50 we are both scared as hell but excited for the freedom of not having to work if we do not want to. I had an Amish company build my 10' x 12' shed/cabin I have yet to finish it because I'm a 68 year old woman (from Michigan) and can't work any longer because my "moth eaten severe arthritis" in my hands are giving me a problem. Living on social security and paying for car insurance and car payments and paying off the cabin take about all of my social security. It looks doubtful, but I'm hoping to scrape enough together to insulate, before the cold Michigan winter begins. Had some identity theft, so send me a prayer or two, won't you? Your videos keep my spirits up. Right now, I'm borrowing this computer, so I can see your encouraging videos. My place is completely off grid and I catch rain water ,also. My big plus is that I live in an un-zoned township! Dave we also lived in a tent while building our cabin.We have not left the rat race yet but our time in Michigan is short. People collect so much junk in their lives and it never makes them happy. I can't think of anyone else who have put up with me :-( A wise man once told me before I got married, if you both give 75% and only take 40%, you won't have any big problems to over come.

Remember that skill, knowledge and physical ability go along with the willingness to engage in a lifestyle like this. Alot of people don't have an appreciation for what it takes to fell and limb a tree safely, to build anything that is plumb, level and square, to organize and execute efficiently, to follow through and finish a huge project. Just staying healthy, uninjured, fed and clothed while doing this is a significant accomplishment. These people have strength, skill, hardiness, vision, and diverse abilities that allow them to succeed at this. Do not underestimate the importance of this. I find that work gets easier when you do it for yourself. I'd rather build my own house for 14 hours and collapse in a tent with well deserved exhaustion than work for someone that doesn't care about me for 8 hours and then drive home and play video games. I've done both, and let me tell you the second one is more difficult. There's no reward or sense of accomplishment beyond the occasional paycheck that disappears into rent and power bills almost immediately anyway, there's no pride, there's no sense of meaning to the work.
Your cabins look great, and I think this kind of pep-talk may help some people actually say "I think I will give this a try." People can do it, with some work, bruised thumbnails, and by asking a lot of questions from lots of folks. Thanks for your videos. They really are a service to Mankind. Think of the effect if, say only a dozen families took your advice and lived simple, in a paid off home, fewer stressors. They would be raising kids to maybe do the same, influencing people in town, and in Church, at work. Things would get slightly better here on earth. Thanks.

I am long in the tooth as they say, and could not do labor, but dream of not being governed by City, County Governments!! My truck paid for since 2009(is a 2007 bought brand new), paid off all but house when retired 2011)! My house will be paid off in. 13 months! My insurance went from $1,100 to $3,000 in one year due to Coastal claims when Ian put their homes in Atlantic 😤😤. So stressed at 78, but hanging in !!! Enjoy Your videos, Brookes and Mick’s! Very sensible emphasis on how things like this actually get done, requiring planning, sweat, willingness to be minimally comfortable for months. All the hard work of actually building overlays all the work of finding the best materials and getting them to the site. Then factor in the friends and associates that support you with loans and gifts of equipment, material, or effort. It's all very doable, but many see the cute end results and don't understand how to actually get there. So thank you for that--one of the best DIY channels for this on YT.
I wonder if after so many years chasing the "American Dream", and having that dream seem to keep somehow staying one step out of reach, a lot of people have become disillusioned. And now they have begun to retreat to a more original dream that isn't about owning shiny cars and well-manicured lawns, but hearkens back to simply wanting a spot of your own land, and a sturdy dwelling to call your own which came about through the sweat of your brow. That's what truly built this country, not the pure pursuit of wealth and materialism.
You got it, brother! Well said and so true. Imagine what our world could be if we all maintained this perspective. Imagine how much more enjoyable life in general would be. Clearly, we all crave peace and joy, and I think this is the way to find it (without getting into religious perspectives). I live in Alaska, not far from Dave & Brooke, and this is a great place to live this way.
I think you might be right. I think there is a small but growing interest in NOT chasing the dragon of consumerism and constant "progress". I get more done when I stay home and mind my business than I do when I go out and try to "make something happen" . I think there might be a renewed appreciation for simplicity and thrift .......living well below your means and enjoying life more.

Excellent job spelling out how to go about getting started with the cabin living dream. I waited until I was 50 to make the cabin living dream a reality but I'm happier then ever. It's a big leap to take at any age but if it's what you want, it's definitely worth the sacrifice. And I sacrificed a home recording studio packed with cool gear so I know what it means to sacrifice. LOL! Still was worth it. Great video and information Dave. I've been trying your method of splitting wood where it lays lately and it's great way to just hammer out a bunch of split wood in a hurry. @@benjaminwidener7562 I am not a carpenter. I measure three or four times cut at least three times.Just make sure your cuts are on the long side. You can always trim down. Stretching boards is more difficult.
When you talked about what your initial investment on your guest cabin was, with everything that you got from the transfer station or dump. I do the same. I've gotten solid wood tables, chairs, baby cradles that people just throw out with little it no repair needed. Just cosmetic. It's crazy. Thank you for your videos. I knew a couple ...they both worked and each weekend they took one salary/check bought material and worked on their home...which meant they really had no day off.....but they did that every weekend....until they got their home built...and when done, owed nobody for their home , it was done and paid for! 👍 That was 20 yrs ago,I'm sure they are enjoying life like you guys do 😉

We lived in a wall tent all summer in 64 while building a house on our property. The Earthquake destroyed or condemned a lot of the houses in this area so we decided to build our own place that summer. I was 7 years old and learned how to drive nails and build homes helping my father.....a skill I have benefited from the rest of my life. You are very wise doing it the way you did and I wish my own kids would be as wise. I did the same thing when I came of age. At 19 years of age I got a job and put all the earnings into a home that I built with my own hands. When I met the woman I was to marry we didn't have to worry about a home.....I already had one built. She found that very attractive in a man :-)
As much as I admire your way of life, the major hurdle isn't money or effort, it's SKILLS. I bet 90% of people don't have the knowledge on how to build a cabin.

85% of everybody’s issue with doing things like this is fear fear of what if it doesn’t work out fear of what everybody else thinks you have to just work hard save money and do it but the keyword work for it
And this can be done right now even with all the crazy things going on in the world - now. I could have done this 30 years ago, and probably should have when i had the means. Distractions of one type or another ate up time and before i knew it the dream was out of reach. 2 motorcycle accidents both caused by drunk drivers a few falls off ladders at various heights - i was a painter. A good hard fall on ice where i work in 2004 has made certain that this type of lifestyle is beyond my abilities at this point in my life. Being on disability from this point onward maybe i can get a few acres to enjoy and leave it to my son. But i can not build anything anymore. Others that desire this lifestyle make a choice and do it when you are young, and it can be a very real thing that you will have free and clear going forward. It can be done right now if you are willing to work hard for it. As time moves on who knows for how much longer this can be attainable.

In the UK you can't do anything like this as you wouldn't get planning permission. It's nonsense that you can't build a cabin on land you own in this country :(
It's the same in my country. Even when you buy the land the woods still belong to the state. And it's not allowed to build anything in the woods, not even an outhouse.

Cutting down trees - need a permit Living in a tent while you build - need to register as a campsite. Standards must be met to qualify. Building permit Dig well Permit for outhouse Not to mention no safety except what you provide yourself. Grow your own food, and go hungry if garden fails. Freeze every winter Used to be a great way to go, but between high land prices, the government, and cost of development, it is restricted to only a few now.
@@surreygeorge11 And you're only covering some of the problems that would be encountered. The majority of counties in the lower 48 will not even let someone live in a building smaller than what they consider appropriate, often 750 sqft. A 12 X 12 cabin is only 144 sqft. They'll let you live in an appartment of 200 sqft but not a single structure. Then there's building codes. The list goes on. It's just a pipe dream.

For me its not about the sacrifice of building this log cabin but more to a person's consistent and wanting to commit a lifetime to the end of living the off grid way of life!! Not many can live such a life in the wilderness!!

Again getting educated on how rustic living is! Tons of hard work, sacrifices, down sizing. I am long in the tooth as they say, and could not do labor, but dream of not being governed by City, County Governments!! My truck paid for since 2009(is a 2007 bought brand new), paid off all but house when retired 2011)! My house will be paid off in. 13 months! My insurance went from $1,100 to $3,000 in one year due to Coastal claims when Ian put their homes in Atlantic 😤😤.

Very sensible emphasis on how things like this actually get done, requiring planning, sweat, willingness to be minimally comfortable for months. All the hard work of actually building overlays all the work of finding the best materials and getting them to the site. Then factor in the friends and associates that support you with loans and gifts of equipment, material, or effort. It's all very doable, but many see the cute end results and don't understand how to actually get there. So thank you for that--one of the best DIY channels for this on YT.

I wonder if after so many years chasing the "American Dream", and having that dream seem to keep somehow staying one step out of reach, a lot of people have become disillusioned. And now they have begun to retreat to a more original dream that isn't about owning shiny cars and well-manicured lawns, but hearkens back to simply wanting a spot of your own land, and a sturdy dwelling to call your own which came about through the sweat of your brow. That's what truly built this country, not the pure pursuit of wealth and materialism.
You got it, brother! Well said and so true. Imagine what our world could be if we all maintained this perspective. Imagine how much more enjoyable life in general would be. Clearly, we all crave peace and joy, and I think this is the way to find it (without getting into religious perspectives). I live in Alaska, not far from Dave & Brooke, and this is a great place to live this way.

I think you might be right. I think there is a small but growing interest in NOT chasing the dragon of consumerism and constant "progress". I get more done when I stay home and mind my business than I do when I go out and try to "make something happen" . I think there might be a renewed appreciation for simplicity and thrift .......living well below your means and enjoying life more.

Excellent job spelling out how to go about getting started with the cabin living dream. I waited until I was 50 to make the cabin living dream a reality but I'm happier then ever. It's a big leap to take at any age but if it's what you want, it's definitely worth the sacrifice. And I sacrificed a home recording studio packed with cool gear so I know what it means to sacrifice. LOL! Still was worth it. Great video and information Dave. I've been trying your method of splitting wood where it lays lately and it's great way to just hammer out a bunch of split wood in a hurry. I measure three or four times cut at least three times.Just make sure your cuts are on the long side. You can always trim down.

When you talked about what your initial investment on your guest cabin was, with everything that you got from the transfer station or dump. I do the same. I've gotten solid wood tables, chairs, baby cradles that people just throw out with little it no repair needed.

I knew a couple ...they both worked and each weekend they took one salary/check bought material and worked on their home...which meant they really had no day off.....but they did that every weekend....until they got their home built...and when done, owed nobody for their home , it was done and paid for! 👍 That was 20 yrs ago,I'm sure they are enjoying life like you guys do 😉

We lived in a wall tent all summer in 64 while building a house on our property. The Earthquake destroyed or condemned a lot of the houses in this area so we decided to build our own place that summer. I was 7 years old and learned how to drive nails and build homes helping my father.....a skill I have benefited from the rest of my life. You are very wise doing it the way you did and I wish my own kids would be as wise. I did the same thing when I came of age. At 19 years of age I got a job and put all the earnings into a home that I built with my own hands. When I met the woman I was to marry we didn't have to worry about a home.....I already had one built. She found that very attractive in a man :-)

As much as I admire your way of life, the major hurdle isn't money or effort, it's SKILLS. I bet 90% of people don't have the knowledge on how to build a cabin.
Building isn't rocket science. Lots of free info. Most guys I know in construction aren't the brightest bulbs...
If you are open to learning something new its not a problem. I think if someone is willing to try to build a cabin they can do it....

And this can be done right now even with all the crazy things going on in the world - now. I could have done this 30 years ago, and probably
should have when i had the means. Distractions of one type or another ate up time and before i knew it the dream was out of reach.
2 motorcycle accidents both caused by drunk drivers a few falls off ladders at various heights - i was a painter. A good hard fall on ice
where i work in 2004 has made certain that this type of lifestyle is beyond my abilities at this point in my life.
Being on disability from this point onward maybe i can get a few acres to enjoy and leave it to my son. But i can not build anything anymore.
Others that desire this lifestyle make a choice and do it when you are young, and it can be a very real thing that you will have free and clear going forward. It can be done right now if you are willing to work hard for it. As time moves on who knows for how much longer this can be attainable.

How did you learn the skills to build your own cabin?
I learned by doing. Once you put up the first log you pretty much understand the process.
Would love to do this... but I have a remote job that absolutely requires internet and reliable power.
How do the million people on the road living out of their vehicles have internet service- seems they find a service, some have traveled to Alaska and other remote areas

I'm off grid with internet due to 5G towers in close proximity - battery banks & solar for power..

It's the same in my country. Even when you buy the land the woods still belong to the state. And it's not allowed to build anything in the woods, not even an outhouse.

Cutting down trees - need a permit
Living in a tent while you build - need to register as a campsite. Standards must be met to qualify.
Building permit
Dig well
Permit for outhouse
Not to mention no safety except what you provide yourself.
Grow your own food, and go hungry if garden fails.
Freeze every winter
Used to be a great way to go, but between high land prices, the government, and cost of development, it is restricted to only a few now.
@@surreygeorge11 And you're only covering some of the problems that would be encountered. The majority of counties in the lower 48 will not even let someone live in a building smaller than what they consider appropriate, often 750 sqft. A 12 X 12 cabin is only 144 sqft. They'll let you live in an appartment of 200 sqft but not a single structure. Then there's building codes. The list goes on. It's just a pipe dream.
@@surreygeorge11 Believe it or not there are still many counties across the USA that have zero P&Z and zero permitting requirements. I was shocked to learn this recently here in Texas as well.
