Back when businesses used to mail you all kinds of garbage offers that you didn't want, along with a prepaid envelope to return your "order" to them, I'd simply cut my name and address from the paperwork, fold it and the envelope it came in neatly to fit in the prepaid one, and mail their trash back to them.

Me, I collected the inserts from other companies that did the same thing and sometimes the Valpak Coupons as well that didn't give away where I was too much. Most of these were credit cards for me... Good times!

readers digest got a brick and another note just said "you want to try for the brucie bonus where the prizes can really get good?"
they must have thought i was bluffing and i sent them a 30kg concrete fence post i also show them a polaroid of (not my ) workplace where cars was crushed and cubed
on the back was a smiley face and note asking them what make of car they want for the next one, never received another "exclusive offer

Story 3 - Easy way around that with those who are avoiding taking calls is to have a timer placed on the Do Not Disturb setting which has a 30 hour expiry, or whatever length of time a sanctioned break, lunch or 15-minute, is set for; and each time the setting is applied it is logged and an email sent to their immediate manager and to HR. There is ZERO excuse to be on that setting unless you are on your break, and if its not a sanctioned break and you set it, then you are definitely avoiding work. Before anyone argues that is too big brother, no it isnt, it can be used as a way to determine if peopel are ACTUALLY working and not just showing up for a paycheck, or taking calls from favorites only. It can also be used as an actual time clock for when people actually take their sanctioned breaks, more so if they are only meant to work a number of hours between breaks.
Story 4 - Sounds like targeted harassment, OP in this situation should take it a step further on the next attempted writeup targeted at them and file a complaint with their manager about the supervisor's targeted harassment and making the workplace a hostile one towards them. Which also is something OP should watch out for if they get others to be malicious compliant because that could also backfire by said supervisor going the route above.

The problem with Columbian House is most of those customers are under 18 years old. And in most States, mine included, you have to be 18 years old or older to be held to any contract. So me and everyone I knew would order our initial dozen or more albums then tell them to Eff off. No civil or criminal way to hold a minor to a contract.

Story 1: Oh Columbia House... I remember those days.
Story 2: Good job, OP... and Rob with the Dad jokes.
Story 3: I just hope OP survives long enough to see this MC through.
Story 4: Good one, OP. Keep on sending photos... and get more sending photos!
Story 5: Sometimes the best MC is leaving...
Thanks to All 5 OPs and KCC for this one.

Honestly, the professor wasn't entirely unreasonable. It sounds like he forgot that the student was actually blind and once he realized corrected himself. Good on him.

    • @xlerb2286
      @xlerb2286 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

In some comp sci classes there was a student that was almost blind. He was super smart but as he couldn't really see the whiteboard so he just had this "staring off into space" look. A prof thought he wasn't paying attention and decided to make an example of him by quizzing him on the lecture contents. Well, the guy rattled off all the answers, corrected the prof on a couple points, and went on to talk about the other concepts that would be covered in the class. The prof was a nice guy and the smile on his face when he realized this was a student that "got it" was wonderful. J.W. (student) I hope you're doing well, and B.E. (prof) you were one of the good ones and are missed.

I remember when my brother agreed to one of those Columbia House type contracts. first story: well, being not from north america, I actually don't know them.
but according to the description in the story, they must have an interesting collection of washing maschines.
but I would go straight to the scrapyard and ask the local guy there: what is heavy and isn't even worth scrapping, so, what do you want to get rid off because even disposing it would be too expensive, as long as it involves one drive with your flatbed truck to the nearest post office.
    maybe dead lead acid batteries?

  • @kstricl

Fun fact: courier services often coordinate box size with box weight and bill according to whichever is larger. So, mailing the biggest box you can find full of styrofoam peanuts and glitter can cost as much as an 80lb bag of concrete. Much easier on your own back and the courier.
Also, then you can fit a rabbid raccoon quite comfortably...

    Rob, I'm 68. You're just a youngster.
Albums story: And that type of thing is why I never agree to "free trials". Cancelling before you have to start paying is nearly impossible.
Blind student story: It's amazing how dumb some supposedly well educated people can be.
Claims story: I hope Sally was severely reprimanded. I strongly suspect that the software used would show ALL of her status changes and when they occurred, showing that Sally was just trying to avoid work.
Delivery receipt story: Well played sir. What's her problem anyway?
Motivated story: While I will agree that technology moves very quickly, I also understand the need to keep costs low and that if things still work at a minimum or better level you don't want to incur the costs needed to upgrade. But losing someone who is a major asset that has to be replaced by two other people is also a stupid move.

Wasn't just Columbia House that did that sneaky ass sub shit. Magazine subscriptions were very predatory back then too. You'd call to cancel but they just kept sending you magazines and billing you for them. Fortunately all magazines including subs also had the prepaid envelopes. I would send my junk mail and garbage with a note saying "Can you please throw this away for me? Thanks." They honor your cancellation pretty quickly when you start using those envelopes for anything other than a sub signup which is probably why they switched to postcards by the 90s.

oh man i remember columbia house. they were great for me... maybe in the 90s it was different than back in the 80s. they'd mail a booklet, a self addressed envelope and a card. In all the booklets were lists of albums and codes, put the code on the card, drop the card in the envelope, mail it. pay the bill with a credit card, get a bunch of CDs in the mail about a month later with a new booklet, card and envelope. they were always cheaper than music stores.

example when i was a kid like 13 or 14 i got a hold of a finger hut magazine and sent it for one in my name... They sent me one and i ordered a lava lamp... My grandma picked me up from school and asked me if i ordered something in the mail... I said OMG it actually came in i didn't think they'd send it to a kid she said yeah i called them up and cussed them out for sending it to a child and she got them to give it to me for free
