  • This is my second attempt speeding up my tractor supply county line log splitter. The first video received a lot of viewer concerns that I would damage my splitter the way I had it modified. This modification does not allow the splitter to have pressure or pivot points that could damage the log splitter.

    Just happened to see your video a few years late but better late than never. I think I can pretty easily build a version of to work on my splitter. Not having to wait for the ram in either direction will definitely make my splitter much more efficient. Thanks for sharing your design.

    Great job. I revamped my splitter last winter. I replaced my standard control with an auto cycle and replaced the 30" cylinder with an 18" and it had a 2" rod.
    All I split is 16" rounds and these changes cut my cycle time in half.
    Again your fix for your splitter is spot on.

    Awesome fix Andrew! So simple yet super effective! My Ruggedmade came with a stroke restrictor plate and pre-drilled holes in the I-beam to mount at various lengths, works great to speed up cycle time but I break bolts every 2-3 cords I run through it! I just took it off a few days ago because of this, I need something like yours!!

    Nice work! Seems to work perfectly and was so simple to make. I made a similar kick out for my Champion log splitter but my handle is mounted up high and so my design was a bit more complicated. Such a time saver not having to wait on the ram to travel those extra inches every time. I also added a couple inches to the top of the splitting wedge which seems to help. One other thing i did was to add some "ramps" to the shoe of the wedge to help lift the smaller logs up and out of the channel so they would not get bound up as they split.

    That's some impressive engineering. Detents in a hydraulic valve are generally 3 balls under spring pressure. They are pushed into grooves in the valve spool. A weaker spring or a longer taper on the valve spool may have been a simpler fix.

    My problem on this home built log splitter that I've been using is the that whoever builtnit didn't look into options to make it faster.
    The Hydraulic Control Valve in spring actuated so you have to hold the handle forward and reverse when operating it.
    It make for very slow splitting.
    I've thought about changing the control valve to a detent but for a good control valve they run 400 or more.
    Also, this splitter is heavy and awkward to use in the vertical position because of the weight of the rail.
    Almost takes too people to raise it.
    I think I'm just going to look for another splitter that's fasr with a detent valve..

  • @Dan-oz4qb

    Seems like the easier solution is to extend the stop plate toward the cylinder. This would allow for the shorter stroke without any abnormal wear on the cylinder side.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you talking about the bottom plate? If so that still doesn't benefit me completely. I also split in the vertical position and raising the bottom plate would make putting large firewood rounds on it extremely difficult.

    You're a genius! You should get a patent on that and other creations!

      Lol I'm definitely no genius, just a decent problem solver. I actually applied for a patent years ago on another product I developed. It costs me thousands and was a horrible experience. Bad taste in my mouth ever since

    It is a good job. For long term storage it is best the ram is fully retracted to prevent rust

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree and totally forgot to mention that. That's another reason I wanted the device to be removable. I always retract my cylinders on my tractor for this very reason.

    You Sir are a genius, even I like that one.
    Have you ever had a piece of wood that your splitter wouldn’t cut?

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, love your name! Nothing yet that it wouldn't split, other than a crotch or two. Any kind of straight wood is no problem.

    pretty darn slick. If you have a piece just a little long you could just pull the deal over to the left and be able to back the ram up a little more; not have to remove it at all. nice job.

    LOVE THE SYSTEM YOU MADE. Because I’m so impressed with this I would like to ask if you would be willing to build me one. That would include everything you made: spring, privet-rebar with pipe, total screw rod assembled parts, etc. If you would do this I’d pay you for the package, shipping, and for your time. I just do not have the equipment to do this. If you would do so, all I’d have to do is find the spot where to have a welder weld the rebar swivel part and then I can drop the rest in place after drilling a hole to put the spring retention screw onto my splitter. Please take time to consider my request. Thank you so very much, hope to hear back soon. Best wishes, Michael

      Sorry just found this comment. I honestly don't feel comfortable building them due to modifying someone else's splitter, it's just not a risk I am willing to take. Not to mention that I am extremely busy with a bunch of projects. You be able to have your welder fabricate this very easily. I purchased the all thread, bolts and nuts from tractor supply. They are all 3/8

    I shorten the stroke by using a 6" high round at the end of splitter

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That doesn't help when splitting in the vertical position like I often due. This solution helps splitting vertically and horizontal.
