I was a trumpet/horn player, but my biggest competition for solos was our lead trombone player. My best friend also played trombone so....you know how obnoxious (and big headed) band kids can be. No denial. I was one and my friend would lend me her trombone and I would figure out my competition's solos by ear (since I couldn't read bass clef as well in middle school) and would totally learn his solos and play them in front of him just too prove I could. I'm so glad my son isn't like me in that respect. He's a fantastic artist and taught himself to play the ukulele by ear but he DEFINITELY inherited his dad's ability to be humble.
🤣 The ability to play music does something strange to the ego, doesn't it? As much as we're labeled band nerds or geeks, people have no idea that the best musicians have as much ego as the starting quarterback. I would have been a much better player had I known about the fixed/growth mindset. I thought that because I was talented, I didn't need to practice as much. I was an ego maniac. I actually learned how to practice bass by watching my daughter's work ethic on guitar and trumpet. It's never too late. 😁

Just be warned, season 4 rips out your soul and kicks around for a while, puts it back in then does it again about 10 or 20 times.
