The Clown

  • Hi, Everybody -
It's time for another archetype video. This week, I'm doing the clown. And what a curious archetype. I was surprised to find out the amount of literature on the clown. Before I do a video, I like to check out what's out there. Many people wrote doctoral dissertations and master's theses on the role of the clown and the fear of the clown, and Jung had some of the most interesting thoughts about clowning.
The clown tampers with power polarities. It tampers with happy and sad, rich and poor, shy and expressive, silliness and seriousness, creating and destroying. So, it operates in this theater of power and transformation.
The power of clowning is that it can disguise what we don't want to approach directly. Often, a clown can break through the unapproachable, the profound suffering, and the deep guilt. Just punch a hole in it to let in a little air.
For so many, clowning became an art form and a way they could communicate in that paradoxical language that is the clown. So, to all of you who have the clown archetype, pay attention to how you change when you put your mask on. What does it allow you to say that you don't say without it? Does it bring out the courage to speak truth to power? If I were your spiritual director, we would walk right into that place and say, what about truth scares you so much that you must mask it to deliver it?
Fascinating. I love all this archetype stuff. I love it.
Thank you for watching these videos. I am amazed at how popular they've become. I just started this to chat a bit with all of you, but it's turned out to be quite fun. And I appreciate you watching. Thank you so much.
    Love,
    Caroline

    Fascinating:
All of our rituals are about keeping darkness away.
The clown can go up to the challenges of life and say: you don’t scare me. I’m not a person. I’m a force dealing with a force. The job of a clown to dance around the emotions that devastate someone.
    Clown
    Trickster
    Harlequin
    Fool
    Jester
    Terrorizer
Can approach forces that we would shy away from.
Tampers with the power of polarities.
    The theater of transformation.
Can approach concepts we would shy away from.
    Speak truth to power.
    Bring light to grief.
Masking up and being something else.
Clowning can disguise what we don’t want to approach directly.
Fools can do outrageous things. Has the risk element.
Putting on a mask that allows a person to become something they are ordinarily not.
Their task is the archetype of transformation.
Use clowning as a way to pierce fear and pain.
A clown can break through the unapproachable, the suffering.
They are always pulling a person into their own opposites.
Put on a different face and become a different person.
    Thank you for this.

20 years ago I noticed I had a certain way of joking with a family member or two that carried a knife it. I had been doing it for probably quite a while but I became aware of it and purposely ceased that way of communicating. I just decided, after becoming aware I was doing it, that it was hurtful and I didn't like that part of myself that engaged in that so I just refused every time thereafter when that urge popped up I refused to voice it. After just a few times it ceased to be something that would show itself and just stopped happening. It was all part of awakening, and continues to be a never ending process of inner discovery and adventure. It is chats like this that clarify in detail what was going on.
    Thank you Caroline!
P.S. I have your Energy Anatomy cassette album that I purchased in the early 90's from Nightingale Conant. "You are monks without monasteries".

This is great! I can certainly say i use this! Comedy for softening the truth for people and then repeating the message but with gravity...i have always found it allows the person to receive the truth easier and it always feels more poetic somehow...but to think about what my fear in this would be...i guess that they might become to defensive and that might be harshly rejected. So great! Thank you for the insights

Wonderful talk! Your insights contribute to deepening the understanding of life:) Most times the topics are in sync with current happenings in my life. I love the clown archetype and I think of it portraying an egoless childlike essence dressed up in silliness to distract and disarm the most egoic personality in order to connect with the child inside of us all.

The line that demarcates my fear of stepping out into truth-power, ie, the ability to walk metaphorically on the edge of my deepest pain, juxtaposed to heightened joy, without apology, is clearly my holy ground of self. After listening to Caroline's injunction to pay attention to that essential, yet masked aspect of the psyche, I can now observe something inside that seems to have been shamed, perhaps by the collective unconscious? Interesting and illuminating investigation! thank you C!

Sounds painful. I understand how it feels to think what I’m doing is wrong. As I heal and resolve my trauma I find that the things I believed were wrong were actually genius. I was pathologizing everything about myself. I thought everything was wrong with me. The beauty of working with archetypes is that they all have a shadow side and a light side. In other words everything has its highest form. As you trust that there is good in what you think is all bad you can get curious about its intelligence and wisdom. I hope you can find support in transforming your perception. I hope one day you understand you aren’t doing anything wrong. You’ve never done anything wrong. You just don’t understand what the purpose is. If you feel curiosity you can ask “what is your highest purpose?” Or Help me understand how you are helping me. I hope you unpack. Sending love on the journey ❤

The clown in my 8th house has brought humor and lightness to the darkest of places. I don't know if I'm masking up per say around serious matters or if I'm clowning with others' resources, yet to me the cosmic giggle (a la Terrence McKenna) and the absurdum tremendum are as abundant as love in the universe.

Dear Caroline, have you heard of a sacer? In Ancient Rome a homosacer was a person who could be killed without consequence. They were outside of society. On the other hand, they were not expected to act within societal norms, and consequently, they were able to be authentic, to tell the truth, etc. Because of their freedom, they were also considered holy. It seems adjacent to the idea of a sacred clown or heyoka, or to the jester who can speak the truth to power. I believe I have the sacer archetype. It’s definitely something by to navigate as you suggested would be true if one had the clown archetype.
Thank you for your life’s work. You have no idea what you’ve meant to me all these years. Bless you, forever.

The clown archetype resonates with me as a gen X .the x being the shape of a turned cross/wheel change bringer. Where we indigos are between the boomers and the rest as a buffer of knowing and bring truth to light as we sweep the stage at intermission of the Play.
    Ready for the final act.
