    Hey Mark:
Enjoyed a glass of Wasmund's Single Malt from Virginia last night. A flavorful complex glass. The master distiller interned at Bowmore to learn the craft. The Virginia grown barley is dried over an applewood and cherrywood fire.
    Mike
    Here are my notes:
    WASMUND’S American Single Malt Whiskey
    Copper Fox Distillery
    4/28/19
    Sperryville Virginia
    Non-Chill-Filtered 48% ABV NAS
Aged in Ex-Bourbon Barrels with progressive infusion of Applewood and Oak Chips.
Local Virginia grown Barley is used, floor malted and dried in Applewood and Cherrywood smoke.
The master distiller did an internship at Bowmore Distillery
This is my second sitting with Wasmumd’s Single Malt. I decanted the whiskey in a fruit jar where the 750 ML filled about 1/4 of the jar. This gave the whiskey breathing room in the jar.
COLOR: Mahogany, Many legs running swiftly
NOSE: Cider, and a rich smoldering wood note with hints of Cherry. A light malt sweetness rises with further nosing.
PALETTE: Smoldering wood with a sweet cinnamon sugar note and light malty note surrounding it. The mouthfeel is creamy and rich. There is a light Mesquite note as well adding some tangy sweetness. There is also a peppermint note. A rich wood smoke note rises as I swirl it around.
FINISH: Tangy Spice and drying with a peppermint note left on my tongue.
With 1 drop of spring water
NOSE: A light candy sweetness with light spearmint underneath
PALETTE: Peppery arrival with hints of Mesquite tangy sweetness underneath. The spearmint note is also here with a light Mesquite smoke note. There is also a dry smoky note as well. There is a slight alcohol burn if I hold it long in my mouth.
FINISH: Spearmint note and drying on my tongue
With 2 drops of Spring water
    NOSE: A light cinnamon note
PALETTE: A light watery mouthfeel, with very light Mesquite tang. There is a dry note with Mesquite . My mouth is becoming cottony dry with liquid in it. A Very light Mesquite smokiness with some Mesquite sweetness as well.
FINISH: Peppery and drying with a Mesquite sweetness in the background resolving to a very dry cottony sense on my tongue.
I sampled this whiskey at a small whiskey festival in Manhattan, NYC and I enjoyed it so I ordered a bottle through a local liquor store here in Brooklyn, NY. I am an apple lover and a smoky whisky lover and at the festival I detected apple notes in the whiskey; which lead me to special order it.
This tasting experience was much different then at the festival, but I am enjoying the difference. The apple notes are replaced by rich wood notes of Mesquite (No Mesquite is used to dry the Barley) I did get a Cherry note in the Nose neat. I enjoy the rich wood notes in this whiskey; surprisingly since the wood notes in more aged bourbons put me off. Here the wood notes have a warming sense like a fireplace in my imagination. The master distiller interned at Bowmore and the wood notes do give me the same experience as Peat smoke in Scottish Whisky, sitting around a fire. I am sure that the wood chips in the spirit intensify the wood notes in the Nose and Palette. They use First Fill Bourbon Barrels, as the Scottish and Irish do. I would Love to taste this whiskey aged in Charred New American Oak or more uniquely, Charred Applewood Barrels. Recommended!

Nice review Mark. I really liked this one as well.

Thanks a lot Rob! I see it's pretty pricey in Ontario. It's not in Manitoba - maybe they won't get it at all. I am kicking myself for not getting Tempest for 80 dollars last summer.

Interesting review! I have not seen or heard about this one. Maybe I should check Bowmore more carefully when I'm scanning the shelves.

Thanks FQ - much appreciated. I hope it's less than 150 when it does come.

Great review Mark. I found this one about a month ago in the supermarket but was hesitant to buy it being NAS and quite expensive. Any speculation on how old it might be?

Thank you very much! I would guess iris a blend of 12, 15, and 18 year old stocks with 15 and 18 being the majority. That's entirely a guess based on my nose and palate!
      Cheers,
      Mark
      p.s if you're in Ontario I am not sure it's worth the price - 180 plus tax--😖

Nice review mark as I just saw this bottle recently and was on the fence about it. My favourite bowmore has to be the white sands 17yr old

Thanks Jason! Ah I hemmed and hawed about that one last summer - too bad it didn't make it home with me.
      Cheers

@@WhiskyWhistle never tried Bowmore yet. Haven’t heard anything positive about their core range(low abv, chill filtered, e150,etc…)
But I have heard good things about Vault & Tempest.
Vault 1 & 2 as well as Tempest 10 batch 2 are available to me.
      Trying to decide which one???
      Cheers 🥃

I was suprised you gave this a 90/100 after it tearing up your nose. Surprised

Hi Jason thanks for commenting! That was immediately water was added, not alcohol but scents - the medicinal notes jumped out, like Vicks vaporub my mom would rub under my nose. It settled down. It wasn't unpleasant like smelling Bacardi 151 - perhaps my expression was unusual but on camera I do just one take unless I really mess up!! You'll note how much I enjoyed everything else.
      Cheers,

After paying $120 for 15 year Laimrig and $110 for Devil's Cask III and buying multiple bottles of each I could not plunk down $200 for this one.
    Tempting after your review though

Hi Peter! Thanks a lot for commenting - kind of you to say! I can't remember whether you're in Ontario - it's way too expensive - if that's your only option try and split it with someone. 180 plus taxes is nuts! Cheers,
      Mark

Kicking myself!! Last year was 80 at MLCC. Never made it back before coming back to Korea. 150 here - just couldn't...maybe I'll be able to get the next release summer 2018.
How's the Glen Garioch? Another fave of mine.
      Cheers Eric!

Just open the Glen Garioch and so far it's good. It a limited series bottle called the Renaissance. There is four Chapters and I got the 1st. All bottles juice distilled after Glen Garioch re-opening. The bottles are are at a low cask strength, 15yo 51.9% and the 16yo 51.4%
