I really like this game. After 26 years, it does show its age, but the gameplay and music make it a classic from the golden age of games. Part building sim and part platformer, this game by did not sell very well, only doing about 600,000 copies worldwide. So it naturally was not very well known. I think I only stumbled upon it in late high school while playing a ROM of it. I beat if back then and really got a kick out of it and still enjoyed it twenty years later. After the sequel, the series was never heard from again. I wonder how a 2017 version would play out? Would it be all building sim, or go straight for the action like the sequel tried? Finding that balance between the two is important and Actraiser really hit that sweet spot.
It's not to say the game is perfect. Your avatar feels like he took action training lessons from a Belmont and this is no Sim-city. Giving the system at the time, I actually enjoyed the building parts more than the platforming.
The ending is way too drawn out and that cherub talks way too slow for my patience. It's nice to visit every zone one last time, crack open a beer and reminisce with the little guy about all the demiurging (Not a real word?) you did through out the land, then you get in your little space ship and fly away to another planet where you again release the plague that is humanity on an innocent world.
    You should ashamed.

    This game was absolutely incredible
It was an early SNES title when us kids were just getting blown away by the new graphics and audio - if you were born in 82 like me all you knew was the NES or Atari and you didn’t know or assume there could ever be anything better

75 here. The first time I've seen Super Famicom live (not Super Nintendo) was on late 90, just after its launch. The first game was this one... the owner of the shop was playing with this angel on the cloud, all text in japanese the he confirmed something and there was that "jump into the ground sequence" (with that amazing Mode 7). I will never forget that moment in my entire life.

Even when I first beat this when I was 9, no one being in the temple hit me right in the feels.
