I did a masterclass with Kerry Ellis and she actually said that Elphaba isn't in her natural vocal register. She said it's "too mixy". I think she did so good at making the role her own
Phenomenal- you can see she keeps the American accent rather than the British one used now- makes sense as it was the first time it came to the UK and she was Idina’s understudy and it got her broadway! Love Kerry!
"She's not better than blah blah blah...!" Give it a rest!! She originated this role in London - did a phenomenal job at it, just because she doesn't riff a lot etc it doesn't make any of the others any better, she has one of the best track records as Elphaba - she nailed her songs EVERY DAMN NIGHT and i bet not even 5% of you could do any better 8 times a week!! LAY OFF!!!
Tavian is right, Idina came to London to premiere as Elphaba, I watched the West End premiere mainly because of the opportunity to see the original Elphaba and hear the voice from the soundtrack.....Elphie will always be Menzel's
I’m so mad at myself. I met her once at my drama class when I was 6 or 7. Didn’t even know what wicked was. My now favourite musical and I didn’t even realise I had met one of the Elphabas
Probably worth considering how she might do it different in a cramped tv studio, vs in a proper theater, where she can cut loose and doesn’t have to worry about closeups and cameras and such
Hi William, we love this video of Kerry singing The Wizard & I. Is it ok to include a short clip (perhaps 15-20 seconds) of this in an interview video with Kerry? We will credit your video in the TH-cam caption. Thank you.
@RuckalltheFules Nobody can get that much power in head voice.. The reason her voice can go nasally is because you have to have a slightly nasally voice to be able to belt properly
Daniel Bowyer Ooh disagree on that. They're both ways t generate power. Example would Alli Mauzey in one of Seth Rudesky's videos of "obsessed". She's played Glinda and basically destroyed Defying Gravity in head voice. It's crazy.
RIGHT?!? I've listened to her sing this stuff a ton and never noticed before. i''ll chalk it up to a fluke. it was super distracting. she's brilliant as hell though.
Honestly, to get the perfect belt you need to mix head voice with breast voice. Obviously you need the power from your chest, but your throat needs to be open and the note needs to sit in your head while the air is blown through your nose. So yes, belts will sound slightly nasal because of the twang that is necessary, the rest just depends on different voices and actors.
Sure she can sing but so can many people (I'm not one of them), but she's no Rachel tucker. Rachel really acts the song, and her melt riff just WOW! The fact she holds the last note for 9 seconds. I didn't see her live but Rachel is my Elphie!
My first Elphie
I did a masterclass with Kerry Ellis and she actually said that Elphaba isn't in her natural vocal register. She said it's "too mixy". I think she did so good at making the role her own
I saw Kerry Ellis on stage yesterday and OMG!!! She was PHENOMENAL! !! I really want to go see her again!!! :D
That last "wizard and I" was pretty amazing, I must say. Very strong voice.
She is amazing
HER PERFORMANCE GAVE ME CHILLS.
She seems a lot more innocent when she doesn't wear glasses. Really expressive face. Love it!
Her voice is just amazing! Love her :)
I don’t know why I love her voice. I saw her defying gravity as well. I can listen to her always.
I love the way she says "whole life"
Team Emphaba Omg I see you everywhere 😂👌
Kerry is returning to Wicked in 3 weeks for a limited run. Sooo excited
Aww she's so cute and sweet
Phenomenal- you can see she keeps the American accent rather than the British one used now- makes sense as it was the first time it came to the UK and she was Idina’s understudy and it got her broadway! Love Kerry!
2.54 i love it the tone of her voice..
i got chills about 10 seconds in XD
She’s so cute! Ah! She’s just adorable
Stop arguing and enjoy kerry ellis!

Actually, Idina originated the role in London. Kerry was the original standby.
+Tavian Cox wrong. Kerry was the first to play ephelba in London, period. Idina was the first overall.
No, Idina was the first on Broadway and the West End. Kerry was the first West End standby and British Elphaba.
Tavian is right, Idina came to London to premiere as Elphaba, I watched the West End premiere mainly because of the opportunity to see the original Elphaba and hear the voice from the soundtrack.....Elphie will always be Menzel's
Well on a professional level that is a completely shallow and narrow minded thing to say, clearly not a performer are we...
She's awesome.
I realy love this!!
I’m so mad at myself. I met her once at my drama class when I was 6 or 7. Didn’t even know what wicked was. My now favourite musical and I didn’t even realise I had met one of the Elphabas
Oh man. You are so lucky. I bet you are really kicking yourself. So would I be. Oh jeez. BUT YOU STILL MET KERRY!!
3:33 . when you're channeling your inner Whitney
I have nothing negative to say about Ms Ellis
This is an amazing performance
Probably worth considering how she might do it different in a cramped tv studio, vs in a proper theater, where she can cut loose and doesn’t have to worry about closeups and cameras and such
One of the greatest Elphabas
Where are her glasses?
I wondered that too
True!
Seems like she’s already been galindafied :D
Does anyone else notice she isn't wearing her glasses for the costume?!
Me!! The lack of them takes away her dorky happiness/excitement :/
Can't beat the OGs.
she's the BEST Elphaba there has ever been
worldwide
No, the best is Idina Menzel.
Kerry blows idina away and I love her too
Gauthier Piep HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Yeah... right. Whatever.
Lynsey Beardshall all the time.
Wow Kerry is amazing!!! Wish i can see her as Elphaba in yet another Wicked performance in the future! Is she still doing Wicked somewhere???
Hey where is here glasses???
@RuckalltheFules She didn't use head voice?
Considering she was, what, the second Elphaba? She really made the character her own!
She was second Elphaba in London. Second Elphaba on Broadway was Shoshana Bean.
But i agree - Kerry is so amazing as Elphaba!!!
Is she Elphaba for Wicked in the Edinburgh Playhouse
Hi William, we love this video of Kerry singing The Wizard & I. Is it ok to include a short clip (perhaps 15-20 seconds) of this in an interview video with Kerry? We will credit your video in the TH-cam caption. Thank you.
If you look up falsetto, that should help. It essentially is the highest part of a voice but isn't natural to some degree. It's hard to explain
@RuckalltheFules Nobody can get that much power in head voice.. The reason her voice can go nasally is because you have to have a slightly nasally voice to be able to belt properly

Sorry to drag up old arguments, but what is head voice?
its the placement of where your singing from xx
why is her suitcase green
why not
Draztikus because on Broadway its brown
In London it's green i know I've seen it and kerry was brilliant both times
@RuckalltheFules Trust me, I sing. You wouldn't get the power that Kerry uses in her performance out of head voice lol
why isn't she wearing elphie's glasses? it doesn't look right without them! still love Kerry tho:)) x
ya'll are talking about head vs chest voice and i literally wanna know is why she's gasping like that. that's very un-Kerry like...
I think she's trying to show excitement
RIGHT?!? I've listened to her sing this stuff a ton and never noticed before. i''ll chalk it up to a fluke. it was super distracting. she's brilliant as hell though.

WestEndGal96 breast voice? That's not a thing. I think you mean chest voice
Pearl the rebel i chortled
@BOWYERD999555 yeah she does that's how her voice is sooooooooo nasally =/
@BOWYERD999555 Rachel Tucker has all the power in the world and her voice isnt' nasally.
because on Broadway it is just brown
Sure she can sing but so can many people (I'm not one of them), but she's no Rachel tucker. Rachel really acts the song, and her melt riff just WOW! The fact she holds the last note for 9 seconds. I didn't see her live but Rachel is my Elphie!
She sounds like idina
+shattered beautyx idina wishes!!!!!!!!
Every other elphaba is better than Idina who usually botches important live performances
Head voice....
Where's the emotion?? Her voice is too quiet for broadway.
Are you blind
Sounds too girly for Elpheba?
I saw Kerry Ellis on stage yesterday and OMG!!! She was PHENOMENAL! !! I really want to go see her again!!! :D
