I’m now 34. I used to watch this movie every weekend at my grandmas, I watched it the week before I started high school to prepare me. This song is so special. The marching band adds so much.
Man, this movie really hits all the feels for me. I was in High School when this one came out. I was a meek, lost teen who just did everything to try and make friends and failed at every turn. This movie taught me "Screw em! Who cares what they think?" and I've lived by that mantra ever since. Suddenly I stopped worrying about how others would react and just did what I wanted to do. It really yanked me out of my shell. Later in life I actually got to meet Chris Crutcher and was able to tell him my story. He lit up and had a the biggest grin on his face when I told him the impact his story had on me. The autographed copy of his book is one of my greatest possessions.
Watched this yesterday, felt younger again for a few moments, tried not to have leaking eyes but I've been put through so much, and my grandpa needs surgery, and i miss my wife, and i gotta go through an airport alone which started my anxiety been to family funerals, just so much has happened and is happening anyway needed to watch this yesterday.
I remember being a snarky 9 year old watching this intro with my little sister. I kept rewinding this scene to "make fun" of it. Now I can look back and realize that this is one of the first moments in my life where I began to feel the power of music. I used the sarcasm and critique of the scene to mask how impactful this was. Music was always my first love.
I saw this in the theater with my friend when it came out and we were both freaking out saying “What is this song??? It’s amazing!” It still gives me goosebumps and the song just isn’t as good without the marching band. Whoever mixed the two is a musical genius.
I've avoided listening to this song for over 20 years, because it reminds me of someone. I searched for it tonight to see if it still hurt. It does, but I feel like I've confronted something that needed confronting.
I relate so hard to this, as I make very strong musical attachments to people, places, events. I'm sorry it still hurt but I' glad you got some closure (hopefully).
The fact that they choreographed, and presumably composed, an entire high school marching band performance to sync with an alt rock song just for the opening credits is pretty impressive.
We actually recorded MY high school marching band, playing in sync with the song and then our composer David Russo, and Richard Butler, re-mixed the song to create this version!
I love this movie soooo much. its a shame they dont make movies for teens like this anymore. everything has to be so hip and trendy. I remember when kids movies really were wholesome and relatable. now its just nothing but little kids being adults.
This movie is criminally underrated. The 90s, much like the 80s, had TONS of teen movies and many of them are classics: 10 Things I Hate About You, Empire Records, American Pie, Dazed and Confused, Clueless, But I'm A Cheerleader, Can't Hardly Wait, Now and Then, etc. Angus gets drowned out among them which is a shame because this movie has so many incredible scenes. From his grandpa's monologue about Superman, the "screw em" advice (which is so simple yet so important), coping with loss, coping with bullying, social isolation that comes from being fat, and instead of just the stereotypical troupe of pimple-faced nerds you have a smart fat kid and a skinny dweeb that possess the most genuine friendship you will ever see in a teen movie.
Couldn't agree more. The feels I get from this movie are insane. I was a fat kid all through school. Now I'm healthy and still connect to that part of me when I watch this.
Used to go to the public library to check out the movie on VHS in 1995 when I was about 10 years old... just for this opening... and keep rewinding it! Ya'll don't know the struggle back then, but it was worth it! listening to this now in 2023 at 38 doing my workout!
Probably doesn't help that my school colors were silver white and blue. And I was a tall fat kid in love with this athletic blonde girl named Melissa. My twerp friend was named Eddie, though, not Troy.
Agree this is the best version of the song (directly from the movie), as the marching band is more prominent throughout. A bit dissapointed that it's cut off by movie dialog and crowd noise before the end, but the complete version on the soundtrack CD sadly pushes the band to the background. And the copyright blocks sharing on TH-cam.

I immediately called my old high school marching band director and my composer, David Russo, and asked if they could record MY high school marching band playing along with the song. And they did it... And then we got Richard Butler and David into a studio to remix the song... and... there you go...

Too many people think 90s movies are just movies without realizing it's the actual life many of us have lived. It's a movie to some and a documentary to everyone else.
Was out of rotation this past week with a damn near broken back from work. TH-cam Movies kept me motivated and God almighty when I found Angus- this one still hits just as awesome as it did when I first saw it back in 96. #Imstillhereasshole!
