Fights in OG Dragon Ball are criminally underrated. I recently got a buddy of mine to start going through it with me (he's only seen Z), and we are at the 22nd tournament (I only have the bricks for seasons 4 and 5) and he was stunned by the level of actual choreography that went into the fights before everything became beam spam. I can't wait to see his reaction to Goku vs. Piccolo Jr.

Yeah, some people complain about Goku “always getting the win”, or “Vegeta always gets shafted”, but really, it’s mainly the the movies that give Goku extra credit and bump up his win record. Sure, Goku has plenty of wins and has saved the Earth so many times, but he isn’t completely OP and infallible, there’s plenty of times where Goku lost/was handicapped to balance things out: He lost to Jackie Chun (albeit narrowly) Got stomped by Tao Pai Lost to Tenshinhan (again narrowly) King Piccolo stopped his heart in their first fight Raditz clobbered him and Goku had to sacrifice himself to take his brother down Oozaru Vegeta crushed Goku and he was bailed out by Gohan, Krillin and Yajirobe He got tricked by Ginyu and briefly lost his body He didn’t take the heart medicine and got overwhelmed by 19 He gave up against Cell (though it was part of the plan), then his exhausted state, Goku got ragdolled by a Cell Jr He couldn’t maintain SSJ3 against Kid Buu and needed others to buy time while he made a Spirit Bomb He lost to Beerus twice He was beating Golden Freeza, but dropped his guard and got shot. He lost to Frost (Although to be fair, the latter was a cheating weasel) He gave up against Hit (though to be fair, it was because they were being held back by the tournament rules) He couldn’t take down Black or Merged Zamasu He got ringed out by Toppo (in the manga) He got bodied by Jiren several times, and even though Goku finally gained the edge with Ultra Instinct, it ran out He and Vegeta got overpowered by Broly and needed to fuse In the current arc, Goku hasn’t exactly been able to put Moro down after multiple attempts.

Goku’s fights, meanwhile, gets to be more memorable and action heavy. It worked for arcs like Freeza (and doesn’t even happen in the Future arc since Goku gets beat down just as much, but even then his Kamehameha worked on Zamasu unlike Vegeta and Trunks’s twin Galick Gun), but in almost every arc afterward, Vegeta takes the backseat for Goku to have the real spotlight. Cell, Kid Buu, Beerus, Golden Freeza, Jiren and Moro as of late have more memorable fights with Goku than with Vegeta among fans, so this could be where the whole “shafted” complaint comes from, even if Goku isn’t always the victor.

I agree with this list. Especially the bout with EVERYONE VS Vegeta. Like dayumn. My man fought and got his ass beat in so many different ways and colors, he makes a crayon box look dull. Ass whooped by Kaio Ken x3, sent half way into orbit via Kaio Ken x4, Yajoribe cur his tail off, almost sent into orbit again via Spirit Bomb, crushed by a big ass Great Ape. And still lived to tell the story and get stronger. What the hell kinda creature survives that shit? Sorry, this is by far one of my favorite fights in dragonball history

Dragon Ball was truly the greatest out of all the Series since they actually managed not to divate from the Manga. While the first bit of Dragon Ball Media I ever saw was the end of a Dragon Ball Z Saiyan Saga episode back when it was on Cartoon Network when I was four, I was first introduced to the series proper when I watch Dragon Ball Z Kai on Nicktoons when I was a teen. Though I really got into it when I first bought my first Dragon Ball Season five Blue Brick (didn’t have any earlier seasons at the time since my town didn’t have many anime nerds), when I was watching the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai arc, that was when I fell in love with the series, which also got me back into Martial Arts.
Fun fact about that. One of the guys involved with both episodes of DBS where Buu fell asleep also worked back on Pokemon during the Orange Islands and was the one that pushed for Ash's Snorlax to be asleep before his challenger cup match of that league.

Honestly I still feel like Kid Buu is slightly stronger. It’s just that he’s relentlessly charging head-first at Goku and doesn’t really care about getting hurt which leaves him open to attacks
Damn, as one of the many people who have still never properly watched Dragon Ball in it's entirety, that sequence where Goku and Piccolo are fighting each other in the air looks unbelievably good. The smoothness of the animation, the detail in the movement, it might be some of the best I've seen in a Shonen anime.
Talking about Piccolo being able to grow in size: you know what would have been more satisfying to see for the ToP? Piccolo using that form again Anizala and the two of them taking each other out, or even Piccolo winning and then getting taken out by the Pride troopers. I know 18 saved 17 and then 17 helped secure the win on that group effort, but we all hated how they made Piccolo bite the dust.
For real, an amazing episode about his and Gohans relationship that ends with a badass Special Beam Cannon, and next thing we know he literally gets pushed out of the ring
i would have liked to see Gohan(future) vs the androids on the list, whilst i know it's more a one sided beatdown than a fight, Gohan's use of tactics, the atmosphere and use of lighting and contrast in the sequence, the travelling through the ruined city of the future timeline and the ultimate heart wrenching conclusion upon trunks' discovery of his fallen mentor make for something not only memorable, but beautiful in it's tragedy. As for stakes, No dragon Balls, no senzu beans, little chance of a happy ending. Gohan lays down his last effort, minus an arm, because (in his mind) he's the last hope his shattered world has of ending this threat. Thanks for your list guys, hope you had a great christmas.
It's one of my absolute favorite fights from the series. Mainly because (like you already said), it honestly felt like there were stakes for once, either he wins or he dies *game over*

So... in the fight with Jiren, Goku uses Tien's Volleyball Punch to launch Frieza in a fastball special. I mean, the only thing missing was Tien's goofy expression from his first fight with Goku. Gorgeous fight though.
Oh wow, I didn't even think about it but you're right. That's totally a Volleyball Fist motion he's using to launch Freeza into the air towards Jiren! I just knew it looked familiar. Guess the Volleyball fist wasn't forgotten about after all!
So just wanna point this out now but the first actual beam struggle in Dragon Ball (noticed you guys didn't say Z during the number 1 pick) was Goku vs Roshi at the 21st tournament. But if you wanna get into lengthy ones that one would also be in Dragon Ball with Goku and Piccolo during the 23rd tournament.

Jiren's personality may be wooden at face value, but I see something much deeper there, especially as his stoic nature crumbles: Complex Psychological Trauma. The effects of C-PTSD vary wildly, but, as a sufferer, I fully relate to his personality. The single-minded pursuit of strength above all else; the attempted abandonment of emotion; the squelching of vulnerability; the decimation of his personality under stress; the personal history that dictates his motives; the push to be invulnerable; the distrust of others --they all represent someone who's been deeply wounded. I can fully understand the criticism of his lack of personality, but I've adopted the same strategy: removing emotions and maintaining a flatlined character is a way some folks try to survive their struggle. It's NOT a good strategy of normal living, as it tears your world apart, but it's an adaptation to unyielding traumatic scenarios. To be fair, the writing could have definitely represented this better, but it still exists. Understandably (and fortunately), it's hard to relate to for most people. That's my personal take on Jiren.

That was a really great take! Jiren has an alright character, it’s just reeeeeeeally not presented well. But I definitely found myself liking him a bit as his vulnerabilities started to show. Honestly for how deliciously entertaining Perfect Cell’s personality is, he feels to me like as much of a wall, power-wise, as Jiren, and I wonder how people would feel about him if not for that great personality. I never liked how there was never a proper struggle fight against him besides the super short SPC beam struggle finale.
Honestly, I loved that the Goku V Piccolo fight made it on the list. It's honestly my favorite fight in all of Dragonball. I do see why Goku v Vegeta in the saiyan saga got first place though, and I'm more than grateful Goku v Piccolo made it to the #2 spot lol. Great list. If anyone is interested in learning more about drawing fight scenes in comics, Dragon Ball vol. 20/DBZ vol. 4 (the entire Vegeta fight) is an absolute masterclass. I don’t think Toriyama’s sequential art ever quite tops itself here. As great as the TV version is, the manga is just sublime here. Ironically, the opposite is true of the Boo arc fights, especially Goku vs Pure Boo. You can tell in the art of the manga that Toriyama’s completely done at that point. Which is funny since I think the Boo arc is probably the most consistently well animated arc in DB.
The only thing that changed was the picture of Krillin in a MAGA hat was changed to a random picture of Chiaotzu. Repubs will do anything to censor criticism.
Damn. Was really hoping Android 16 vs Cell would make the list somewhere. It was probably my favorite Cell fights. The two were evenly matched and 16's true power came as a real shock to me at the time.
Great list! I started reading the manga when raditz showed up so i literally got the best fight (number one in this video) in the whole series when i started the series. I STILL remember the feeling of reading those chapters. One of the best feelings i have ever felt. I have never felt that happy about reading anything or watching anything ever in my life. Watching this was very nostalgic for me. Thanks! I have the whole series in manga books still in my bookcase.

God, I love OG Dragon Ball so much. This video is just making me want to rewatch it. I LOVE that Goku gets kinda cheated out of both of his first two Tournament finals. You could argue that Roshi planned that final kick, but the only reason that Goku lost to Tien was that fucking car.
Truthfully the only fight I was originally against was the Recoome fight, since I felt that the Nappa fight was better and more effective since he actually managed to kill most of the Z warriors. I was glad that several Dragon Ball fights made the list.
Goku suplexing Jiren into Freeza's outstretched knee strike is one of those shots that always makes me wince. In a battle of literal god-level warriors, that one shot is VERY real.

ok, so literally watching this again two years after release cause I love this goddamn show, and I just wanna say that I think knowing Goku could have gone Super Saiyan 3 during the Vegeta fight is a double edged sword in retrospect as well. Yeah, you could say that it causes a little bit of the fight to mean less, but I also think it adds to the characters later on, when Vegeta realized that he was still outclasses once again. The little comment he made about it later, saying he saw Goku go super saiyan 3 and HATED it is soooo good IMO. It nearly gets them killed because Vegeta didnt even want to help Goku with fusion at first, and I think in the end it reinforced their relationship because it made vegeta realize that even a little boost to win one fight against his rival wasnt going to be good enough for him.
It'll be interesting. because they could either play it for laughs, or they could use it as an opportunity for it to be the ONE TIME Vegeta gets through to Goku, and where Goku really realizes how angry Goku's nonchalant treatment of their rivalry makes him. It will either be hilarious, or a genuine moment of emotional resonance, and honestly, given who's writing it, I don't see why the two have to be mutually exclusive.

I like how they say the Galick Gun and Kaioken Kamehameha Clash was the first beam struggle even though the fight they talked about before it had a beam struggle which also wasn't the first one that honor goes to another fight on the same list.
Just listening to you guys sing the unabashed praises of Goku+ vs Vegeta while "Cha-la Head-Cha-La" plays in the background is so beyond hype, nothing could be a more fitting backdrop to such a great fight in Dragon Ball history.
Im so glad the frieza, Goku, and 17 VS Jiren ranked so high. It has topped ALOT of fights from dbz and the OG and it was just great to see Goku and Frieza exhausted and the desperate struggle to take down Jiren was a great way to end the tournament. Not only that it was hardly 2 minutes long. Its so good.
We're never gonna see it thanks to the power scaling but i'd love love LOVE either super or some kind of reboot of the franchise to go back and explore obvious missed opportunities. Both stuff like Raditz but also seeing something like a fight against the Ginyu Force all working together, showcasing incredible synergy and teamwork.
One thing I never see people talking about with Jiren vs. Goku, Frieza, and A17 is how when they’re talking behind the barrier and bonding, in the background you can hear an orchestral version of Limit Break, the second OP of DBS. I know I sing along every time, because this is DRAGON BALL SUPER; JUST TELL THE GODS I’M BLOWING THEM AWAY!!!

Ass whooped by Kaio Ken x3, sent half way into orbit via Kaio Ken x4, Yajoribe cur his tail off, almost sent into orbit again via Spirit Bomb, crushed by a big ass Great Ape. And still lived to tell the story and get stronger. What the hell kinda creature survives that shit? Sorry, this is by far one of my favorite fights in dragonball history

Dragon Ball was truly the greatest out of all the Series since they actually managed not to divate from the Manga. While the first bit of Dragon Ball Media I ever saw was the end of a Dragon Ball Z Saiyan Saga episode back when it was on Cartoon Network when I was four, I was first introduced to the series proper when I watch Dragon Ball Z Kai on Nicktoons when I was a teen.
Though I really got into it when I first bought my first Dragon Ball Season five Blue Brick (didn’t have any earlier seasons at the time since my town didn’t have many anime nerds), when I was watching the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai arc, that was when I fell in love with the series, which also got me back into Martial Arts.

I love how the Kid Buu fight shows Goku effectively being stronger than Buu, but Buu's infinite resilience drains Goku's power over time.

Honestly I still feel like Kid Buu is slightly stronger. It’s just that he’s relentlessly charging head-first at Goku and doesn’t really care about getting hurt which leaves him open to attacks
Damn, as one of the many people who have still never properly watched Dragon Ball in it's entirety, that sequence where Goku and Piccolo are fighting each other in the air looks unbelievably good. The smoothness of the animation, the detail in the movement, it might be some of the best I've seen in a Shonen anime.

Talking about Piccolo being able to grow in size: you know what would have been more satisfying to see for the ToP? Piccolo using that form again Anizala and the two of them taking each other out, or even Piccolo winning and then getting taken out by the Pride troopers. I know 18 saved 17 and then 17 helped secure the win on that group effort, but we all hated how they made Piccolo bite the dust.
For real, an amazing episode about his and Gohans relationship that ends with a badass Special Beam Cannon, and next thing we know he literally gets pushed out of the ring

i would have liked to see Gohan(future) vs the androids on the list, whilst i know it's more a one sided beatdown than a fight, Gohan's use of tactics, the atmosphere and use of lighting and contrast in the sequence, the travelling through the ruined city of the future timeline and the ultimate heart wrenching conclusion upon trunks' discovery of his fallen mentor make for something not only memorable, but beautiful in it's tragedy.
As for stakes, No dragon Balls, no senzu beans, little chance of a happy ending. Gohan lays down his last effort, minus an arm, because (in his mind) he's the last hope his shattered world has of ending this threat.

So... in the fight with Jiren, Goku uses Tien's Volleyball Punch to launch Frieza in a fastball special. I mean, the only thing missing was Tien's goofy expression from his first fight with Goku. Gorgeous fight though.

Jiren's personality may be wooden at face value, but I see something much deeper there, especially as his stoic nature crumbles: Complex Psychological Trauma. The effects of C-PTSD vary wildly, but, as a sufferer, I fully relate to his personality. The single-minded pursuit of strength above all else; the attempted abandonment of emotion; the squelching of vulnerability; the decimation of his personality under stress; the personal history that dictates his motives; the push to be invulnerable; the distrust of others --they all represent someone who's been deeply wounded. I can fully understand the criticism of his lack of personality, but I've adopted the same strategy: removing emotions and maintaining a flatlined character is a way some folks try to survive their struggle. It's NOT a good strategy of normal living, as it tears your world apart, but it's an adaptation to unyielding traumatic scenarios.
To be fair, the writing could have definitely represented this better, but it still exists. Understandably (and fortunately), it's hard to relate to for most people. That's my personal take on Jiren.

Jiren has an alright character, it’s just reeeeeeeally not presented well. But I definitely found myself liking him a bit as his vulnerabilities started to show.
Honestly for how deliciously entertaining Perfect Cell’s personality is, he feels to me like as much of a wall, power-wise, as Jiren, and I wonder how people would feel about him if not for that great personality. I never liked how there was never a proper struggle fight against him besides the super short SPC beam struggle finale.

Honestly, I loved that the Goku V Piccolo fight made it on the list. It's honestly my favorite fight in all of Dragonball. I do see why Goku v Vegeta in the saiyan saga got first place though, and I'm more than grateful Goku v Piccolo made it to the #2 spot lol. Great list.

If anyone is interested in learning more about drawing fight scenes in comics, Dragon Ball vol. 20/DBZ vol. 4 (the entire Vegeta fight) is an absolute masterclass. I don’t think Toriyama’s sequential art ever quite tops itself here. As great as the TV version is, the manga is just sublime here.
Ironically, the opposite is true of the Boo arc fights, especially Goku vs Pure Boo. You can tell in the art of the manga that Toriyama’s completely done at that point. Which is funny since I think the Boo arc is probably the most consistently well animated arc in DB.

Damn. Was really hoping Android 16 vs Cell would make the list somewhere. It was probably my favorite Cell fights. The two were evenly matched and 16's true power came as a real shock to me at the time.

Great list! I started reading the manga when raditz showed up so i literally got the best fight (number one in this video) in the whole series when i started the series. I STILL remember the feeling of reading those chapters. One of the best feelings i have ever felt. I have never felt that happy about reading anything or watching anything ever in my life. Watching this was very nostalgic for me. Thanks! I have the whole series in manga books still in my bookcase.

God, I love OG Dragon Ball so much. This video is just making me want to rewatch it. I LOVE that Goku gets kinda cheated out of both of his first two Tournament finals. You could argue that Roshi planned that final kick, but the only reason that Goku lost to Tien was that fucking car.
Truthfully the only fight I was originally against was the Recoome fight, since I felt that the Nappa fight was better and more effective since he actually managed to kill most of the Z warriors. I was glad that several Dragon Ball fights made the list.
"Boulder Gauntlets" was probably my favorite part in the Goku v M. Vegeta fight
Goku suplexing Jiren into Freeza's outstretched knee strike is one of those shots that always makes me wince. In a battle of literal god-level warriors, that one shot is VERY real.

ok, so literally watching this again two years after release cause I love this goddamn show, and I just wanna say that I think knowing Goku could have gone Super Saiyan 3 during the Vegeta fight is a double edged sword in retrospect as well. Yeah, you could say that it causes a little bit of the fight to mean less, but I also think it adds to the characters later on, when Vegeta realized that he was still outclasses once again. The little comment he made about it later, saying he saw Goku go super saiyan 3 and HATED it is soooo good IMO. It nearly gets them killed because Vegeta didnt even want to help Goku with fusion at first, and I think in the end it reinforced their relationship because it made vegeta realize that even a little boost to win one fight against his rival wasnt going to be good enough for him.
I wonder how you guys are going to do Vegeta's Majiin Speech in dbz abridged, you did so good with Goku's farewell I can't help but be curious.
It'll be interesting. because they could either play it for laughs, or they could use it as an opportunity for it to be the ONE TIME Vegeta gets through to Goku, and where Goku really realizes how angry Goku's nonchalant treatment of their rivalry makes him. It will either be hilarious, or a genuine moment of emotional resonance, and honestly, given who's writing it, I don't see why the two have to be mutually exclusive.

It has topped ALOT of fights from dbz and the OG and it was just great to see Goku and Frieza exhausted and the desperate struggle to take down Jiren was a great way to end the tournament. Not only that it was hardly 2 minutes long. Its so good.

We're never gonna see it thanks to the power scaling but i'd love love LOVE either super or some kind of reboot of the franchise to go back and explore obvious missed opportunities. Both stuff like Raditz but also seeing something like a fight against the Ginyu Force all working together, showcasing incredible synergy and teamwork.
