Season programmer Karen Alexander and saxophonist, broadcaster and Jazz FM Presenter YolanDa Brown join Caramel Film Club’s Be Manzini to discuss the BFI season, Her Voice: Black Women from the Spotlight to the Screen.
The season‪ celebrates performers who have adapted their musical talents to film, such as Whitney Houston, Beyoncé and Diana Ross, as well as music legends depicted in illuminating documentary portraits, including Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald and Mavis Staples.
Our speakers explore how Black female performers have been represented on-screen, share their highlights from the season, and reflect on the lives of some of the artists featured in the programme.
The Her Voice season runs at BFI Southbank until the end of June 2021 with selected titles available on BFI Player.‪
