    If you're having problems with your generator and you're in a middle of a hurricane or a major power outage you probably waited too long to have your equipment serviced, this is not meant for the homeowners.... this is meant for other service guys to entertain and to give them some hints of the things I've ran into. This is not a help a helpline. Thanks 4 watching!

    I replace the factory terminal clamps with lugs soldered into the cables, attached to marine grade terminal ends. Spray with NOCO or similar, very solid battery connection.
    I also verify genset-off charge volts and running volts.

    We had cold weather here in Wisconsin this past week. Had like 5 or 6 calls of generators that wouldn't start. It was the cold. Just cleared the alarm and started manually no more problems with it. Then switched it back to auto did an outage test. Everything good.

    Upgrade that software to 1.4.39366 when you go back for the maintenance. I didn’t see the cold weather start in the edit menu. That was a life saver years ago. Way to many low volt shutdowns until that firmware update.

    I got this error yesterday on my 2 week old 2024 24k (propane) generac. My engine cranked the first time, but did not start, and then after that didn’t crank at all. I noticed my fuse on the top panel looked crooked and not seated properly. I pulled it out and put it firmly back in and the generator worked perfectly after.

      update 1-18-2023, the tech came today. The starter was the culprit for the sense loss fault. He said it has happened on quite a few of the late models. It sure sounded and worked a lot better than the original 3 yr old starter. Had the valve clearance adjusted also. FYI.

      It depends on what your experience levels are. I do all kinds of things that I shouldn't probably do. I'm mechanically inclined but if it's something really important I try to get somebody more qualified. I think a battery is fairly straightforward but you got to make sure you put the correct terminals on and hook the negative up last to prevent a possible short.

    • @HVACRSurvival
      @HVACRSurvival  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was told they were better built for the vibration of the generator. When did they take a dump? The one that surprised me was the Interstate battery's, I had more problems from those than the cheaper no named house battery they sold.

    • @brnmcc01
      @brnmcc01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HVACRSurvival I don't care for the Interstate batteries either, had lots of problems in the past on different vehicles. However, they're made by Johnson Controls, so I don't think they could be worse than the Everstart (NeverStart) batteries at Wal-Mart? I had one of those in my old 1992 GMC service van that lasted 7 years, and when I replaced it, it still had 200 CCA left in it. But wouldn't hold a charge very well, died on me after being broke down on the side of the road for 3 hours with hazard lights on. Can happen to any vehicle I guess. I used the Exide battery 26R battery that came with my own Generac standby generator, had no problems with it, but replaced it at 3 years, because like you said, the Gen was expensive and the battery only $76, why should I take a chance with an old battery. The crane company I work with to set large rooftop HVAC units, they swear by Deka/East Penn batteries. I looked into it, seems like they're the last family owned battery manufacturer in the US. The Duracell batteries they sell at Sam's Club are made by East Penn Manufacturing. I'm going to try one of their 27F in a new 48kw Generac that I have on order, whenever it arrives. (10-12 week lead time). I've also had good luck with the Napa 26R battery in the air cooled units. I went to Napa to get one for a really old 5243 series pre-Nexus 16 kw unit that had been abandoned and neglected for a few years, previous owner had passed away, and from how black the oil was, probably didn't change the oil either. But, I brought it back to life and that old 999 engine is tough I guess :)

    I had a brand new generator installed. seemed to work fine then all of a sudden I noticed on the side, there is literally no light. not even a red light. the display panel is blank but the "off" and "auto" buttons are lit but the manual button is not lit. when trying to press any buttons, no response. any ideas?
    also I never activated the generator through the wifi app since it's crap and doesn't work. that shouldn't matter right? I never had problems running it on manual before. any input would be great. fuse, and everything else is brand new.

    • @HVACRSurvival
      @HVACRSurvival  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Last I checked if you don't register it the generator won't run in auto mode, only in manual. Sounds like something catastrophic might have happened. It's under warranty called Generac and get an authorized dealer out there. Not like it's going to cost you anything since it's all warranty.

  • @murrayhill4016
    @murrayhill4016 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I believe I have discovered an intermittent bug in the Guardian controller. If you have run the generator using a manual start, for any reason - cleared a fault code and want to test it, or you have been away for a couple weeks, etc.; when you want to end the test run AVOID USING THE STOP BUTTON. Instead, press the AUTO button. If there is no backup power demand at this time, the generator will shut itself off and be ready to start on the next start command, whether it be from the controller (i.e. a power outage has occurred) or with a manual start command. I have found that using the STOP button can result in the next start command failing with a "Loss of RPM Sense" code. This only crops up about once in twenty start cycles, after being shut down each time using the STOP button (plus Enter, unplugging the 7.5 Amp fuse and putting it back in, etc.). I did not write the firmware in the controller's micro processor, but it seems like going from running on Manual to pushing AUTO, lets the controller go through a shut down routine that leaves the RPM Sensor register in a positive/confirmed state, and while cranking the engine, the controller will be in a zero fault status. However, by shutting down the generator using the STOP button, intermittently the controller will see a Loss of RPM fault status, and interrupt the starting process. I could be wrong, but going from running on Manual to pressing the AUTO button, has eliminated starting problems on my Generac Guardian backup generator.

    • @HVACRSurvival
      @HVACRSurvival  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It depends on which controller it is. I have seen problems by switching the generator from manual straight to auto and not allowing it to stop. Which sounds like total opposite of what you’re describing, but thank you for sharing! 👍👍

      @@HVACRSurvival There are much colder and snowy places in our country, but here it is close to 0 to +5 degrees. In our culture, there is a cultural belief called "Cemre fall", after this month the temperature is increasing. Pay close attention to yourself, tomorrow is Sunday and I'm resting😴😁. Good luck and good work 🙏🙏🙏
