I had a best friend for 40 years or so and she died a couple of years ago of cancer. I can never have another friend like her in my lifetime. Oh, we laughed uproariously; and cried sometimes when we were hurting. She always had my back and I always had hers. Luckily, I have children and grandchildren, but it’s not the same as having a bestie! 😢
I agree with several comments here. Joy is the most important thing. Happiness built on friendships is dependent on those relationships lasting. At the end of the interview, the 4 friends are asked if they can imagine not having one another. And I thought, based on their response, ah, there’s the crux of it. True joy and peace-and yes, happiness-flows outward from within. One must be happy within oneself first and foremost. No one can give this to you. Or take it away. Once you find that inner peace, joy and strength, you will never be lonely again. Begin with deep gratitude and let nature nourish your soul.
Friendships can often be strong over time, or sometimes they can fade away or end abruptly. It can be hard to accept, but that’s the truth. I’ve had old friends that walked out- and it wasn’t such a great feeling, but that’s how they need to live; you need to respect their spaces, most of the time. But when new doors open for new friends to step in (even if you often try to connect with old friends), then you’d feel happier and honored, in what you’re trying to develop, for yourself and your friendship life.
chris the girl scouts had a song about friends. make new friends but the old one is silver and the other is gold. chris it has been noted that friends are strangers that you have yet to meet. if you like, you take the friend side and i will be strange enough for both of us. have a good day and wishes for a better 2023.
I grew up alone and neglected and later developed schizophrenia. The happiest time in my life was when I was alone as an adult and following my dreams. It wasn't until I was actively making friends and dating that I became unhappy. There's more to be said about people's inner compasses and how less is often more. This is a nice study, but it needs more perspective.
I can see the Latin American thing. Despite poverty and violence, you see, for example, Mexican people always down to get together or lend a helping hand. Mexican-American here.
I prefer joy over happiness. Happiness is so over-wrought bordering on insincere or inauthentic, in my view. For me, joy is an interior pendulum of living well, balanced and filling everyday life with small, anonymous kindnesses.
I totally agree with you. The pursuit of happiness has been the source of a great deal of strife. Joy pops up at any time and under any circumstance. It comes and goes, but it is powerful in the moment. Humans have to navigate a myriad of difficult and challenging situations so these moments of joy that could be laughter, hugging a pet, noticing something beautiful in nature, whatever, can for a moment flip a switch. It is not that I disagree with the concept of close friendships bringing happiness, I just believe that they are just like all moments of joy possible joy.
1. The doctor should use the term "contentment". That leads to enduring happiness. 2. True ceramics is the pouring of liquid slip into molds. What those women were doing looked more like pottery.
A cool thing about friends is that you have to _earn_ them. You can't just order a friend off of Amazon. You cannot _buy_ history with another person; you have to spend it together. 🙂

VERY true ! I'm a senior and 9 years ago I lost my husband of 40 years. A few years later I lost a childhood friend and my cousin. Then I lost my best friend from high school and my college roommate.
Happiness, at least in the US, is largely promoted as having “stuff”. Happiness seems to be dependent on external, ephemeral circumstances. Joy, contentment, that comes from your internal persona. As the Apostle Paul wrote, “to be content wherever I am, in whatever circumstances…” while being unjustly imprisoned is a goal to seek.
I admit I am commenting before watching the whole thing but I would love to know how social media plays into this … personal relationships have been complicated by technology no?
I would say social media has definitely (overall), hindered good personal interactions. I wish folks would stop staring at their phones, and look each other in the eyes. We walk by folks without speaking. We bare our souls on social media and the lives we wish we had, instead of calling our family member and saying, "hey, you wanna go to breakfast on Sat?" Social media is a huge distractiion that most of us could stand to minimize our time on. Signing off ...LOL!
It's true that we're never alone because the Lord is with us ... but we can still desire human friendships as well. We were made that way I believe. I don't want to be in a world full of people, and not have any close personal friends. While I am still able, I choose to be a friend. (Prov, 18:24)
So true about human relationships, but Jesus is The Best Friend to have. John 3:16-18, John 12-17, Romans 12, Romans 5-8, Philippians 4:4-8, Proverbs 3:5-7, Psalms 27, 84, and 91. For starters read or listen to the gospel of John, and the books of Romans, Acts, Proverbs, and James.

The only true happiness in life is knowing that a loving God created you and if you acknowledge your sin and accept His sacrifice of death so that you can live forever with Him then you will truly be HAPPY in JESUS. Ask Jesus to forgive your sin and make Him lord of your life today.

I have many true friends. Yes, it's "work". But... it's a labor of love that is reciprocated.

Only you determine your happiness. No one affects your happiness if you don't let them.

People suck and will betray you at every point of your life. This is a joke. And every woman knows it. Or they haven’t been betrayed yet 🤷♀️
I disagree. ✌️
