I remember watching this when it was first transmitted in 1986, watching on my little Sony Trinitron TV in York. Excellent series. Thanks for posting it.
I Hope one Day The BBC will Put This TV Series on DVD just like The Train Now Departing and Gods wonderful Railway and The 1968 TV Version of The Railway Children
I remember the twilight of steam and of the small station. I grew up in Thirsk approx. 25 miles north of York on the LNER. We had it all, a four platform station, our own steam engine to move the coal cars from train to coal chutes, a small branch line from the station to a small three track goods yard close to the centre of town and a full staff of people. Now there is only two platforms left, the outside up and down slow with the inner up and down fast platforms demolished, no more goods trains, the steam engine and shed is gone, the goods yard is gone so has the signal box, and there is now a staff of one.
Even today, there are no headlights on trains, just marker lights. Engineers are trained to know exactly where they are, day or night. It is called line knowledge, knowing every curve, bridge signal and station blindfolded.
Is this the same Duchess of Hamilton that's on display at NRM....? .... now clad in a streamline casing. I do know the casing isn't original and that the museum has applied it. I see this was in the days when they didn't use backup diesels... totally reliant on the locomotive in front.
I remember this series. Absolutely brilliant.
I was shocked to discover Miles Kington had died in 2008. RIP.
Miles Kingston presents and Tells The Stories of This Program Very well and very nicely
I Like Him
I never tire ofwatching these videos nostalgia from when i grew yup
Awesome to finally see the episode "the quest for speed " finally uploaded on youtube
THANK YOU!!! I watched these again and again growing up; the series was called Great Steam Trains on PBS here in the states.
Me too - was addicted

Nice to see Highley again. Used to kayak on the Severn from Highley (or sometimes Arley) to Bewdley when I was at school
Bring back steam, our seats on most modern trains are uncomfortable
I liked the individual compartments, a bit of privacy.
Excellent, thanks for posting.
The duchess of Hamilton is beautiful
she definitely looked better without the streamlining
I’ve always thought the loco was better with streamlining. It gives it a distinct and sleek appearance and stands out amongst the York exhibits.
Nice to see the full series on TH-cam!!!!
I wonder how much of the original Flying Scotsman is left today?
hard to imagine running on the Fort William to Mallaig line with no headlight. I don't know how you would know where you were.

Yes it is the same locomotive. There is another Duchess class locomotive operational and her boiler ticket runs out in 2025.
'3 mins was long enough. what's with the stupid music
Granted the opening music is not great, nor is the quality very good, but the content is fantastic.
