DIY Resistor Wheelsets for Model Railroad Train Detection

- Welcome back everybody! Today we are continuing to look at model train detection for your model railroad. We will be installing resistors on metal wheelsets to allow for unpowered rolling stock to trigger a current sensor! This is a very cost effective way to allow for current sensing with your rolling stock. Model trains and model railroading are such a great hobby. Let's share it together!

Hey, your link for the resistors is a 404 error. do you have an updated link, or even a link to a set of wheelsets that are already done? Every place I go, they are out of stock!
Good video. I would suggest putting 2 resistor wheelsets per car, 1 on each truck. This way the activation happens as soon as the car enters the sensor section instead of waiting until 3/4 of a 50ft car is inside the area to activate.
I've found that sometimes the conductive paint can chip off and loose the connection. I borrow my wife's clear nail polish and coat the conductive paint to give it extra staying power.
One pointer, check your wheel gauge before you add the resistor. It will ensure your rolling stock works on points smoothly and trying to fix the gauge after could pop the resistor off or break the conductivity.

You can knock down the intermittent detection with a "hold down" / "re-arm" timer
This is my plan with some modified code from the block signal.
Thats a lot easier way of doing it than other tutorials ive seen!

The link for the surface mount resistors is a no go.
I ordered some that I found on Amazon, but they seem way to tiny. Jimmy, yours look bigger. I'm going to investigate this .
Hi Great tutorial. But how does this work with turing loops? Ex. when the loco is in the switch zone and the carriage ist still in the loop?

Hey Ron, So I have not tried soldering them, partially because I am not the greatest at soldering haha! There is a chance you could solder them with HO Scale, I think N Scale might be a bit too small. The resistors are also incredibly tiny.
What is the maximum size resistor that will reliably activate the current sensor?

Good day DIY . I like your show it is useful, I like to know from your experience what type turnout of PECO System I can use it in my layout #13 from ATLAS Book # 11 p# 20. It has 5 turnout # 4 by ATLAS Cod 100, 3 L.H, and 2 R.H by using the DCC System. Since there 2 type of PECO Turnout one is Elecrofrog, and Insulfrog. Best regards to you for your time.

I've been scammed quite a few times and it's cost me several thousand dollars, and now I am a lot less trusting and more wary of people
I see that the number of evil people in the world far outnumbers the number of good people and every day it seems like there are only a few decent people left and I've run into the decent people online in multiple groups that we all seem to share interests in that I know now are hunting places for the evil people of the world
I've also noticed that now that I don't give the way I used to that people I thought were my friends stole their true colors and that they were bad people all along
My life has become very lonely and I realize that the anytime that the phone rings or there's a knock on the door or a letter in the mailbox it's someone who wants to yell at me or threaten me and it used to be that it was somebody who wanted something but now that they know they can't get anything from me they don't bother asking
It's very disheartening to know that the world is this cruel and evil and sick
And they look at people like us who just want to play with our trains as idiots and morons and saps and they don't understand the simple joys of life they only get pleasure from hurting other people
I'm still trying to get the strength to set up a train set but unfortunately I'm disabled and sick in bed more than 90% of the time
I really would like to have a train set before I die and I purchased all of the parts over the course of a year about 2 years ago but I just haven't been well enough to take the time to set it up and there's no one I can trust to help me
I do enjoy watching your videos it helps me to live vicariously
I like watching your channel but I'm electronically challenged everything you talk about adrenals and feel like just goes over my head is there a book not electronics trains for dummies
