Your spreadsheet is AWSOME! Thanks for all your work. I'm a planner type, and all your info will definitely help me. I'm not trekking this year... just getting ready.
Thank you Ash. Phew, so great to hear right from the off that it’s so much easier than you imagine. 😊 I remember before you left I asked you about the xls and your details captured are amazing but did send me in a spin 😂 This post PCT video has been hugely calming ❤ Thank you for continuing to make awesome content. 👍
Thanks so much for sharing so so helpful especially for an Aussie like me. Love your vids there the best thanks for sharing. Would love to see what you ate as well on trail. I love the parts that showed you could go to reí or Walmart and how close they were.
Thanks for watching :) my next video goes into a little more of what I was eating on trail and there’s a couple of videos I posted while on trail called resupply specials that shows the contents of my boxes if that’s any use. Goodluck with your planning! Ps, Australia is one of my favourite countries in the world!
Ash, many thanks for the very helpful spreadsheet! I will be sectioning from LA RV to Kennedy Meadows in April, and your 15 miles/day in this section fits perfectly with my plans! Best to you for your next great adventure!
Great video, very helpful to see the XLS and thought process. I plan on eating lots of the Starkist Wild Salmon in EVOO pouches. Are those readily available at resupply locations? How about canned sardines or tuna in pouches (Tuna in pouches is my least favorite option and a last resort). Ideally, i could get healthy wild salmon in EVOO and, if so, i won’t need many resupply boxes. I don’t want to eat hiker trash at all. Thanks!
@@Henning_Rech I’m on a ketogenic diet and regularly fast to build up a tolerance to using fat for calories - ie, having a caloric deficit. Look up “one meal a day” or OMAD. Part of my training is to figure out how much i can hike in a day, on a caloric deficit, without sacrifice health. So no - i won’t need lots of carbs on trail and won’t gorge myself on sugar or carbs. Caloricly dense food is the way to go - see Gear Skeptic’s thorough analysis on the topic. Among the caloricly dense foods, salmon in olive oil is the healthiest, so that would be a staple. I’ve tried the Ketobrick - 1000 calories in a bar. But just a few bites of that could be dessert. And lots of healthy dehydrated vegetables and nori (dried seaweed) for vegetables. I’m packing the smallest Bearvault - the 425 - with nutrient dense, caloricly dense food, while on a ketogenic diet, to minimize weight, maximize nutrition, for the longest carry of the PCT. For the rest of the PCT, I’ll be less strict if i have to be, and send resupply boxes if necessary. Also - goal of the diet isn’t so much to lose weight/fat, although that will happen. Goal is to be ultra nutritious and anti-inflammatory - reducing aches and pains and other ailments associated with inflammation. I’ve been low carb for decades and active. I don’t need 4000-6000 per day FROM FOOD. The body gets calories from food AND fat-burning when in ketosis. But only if the food you eat keeps you in ketosis.
Thanks for watching :) I’m not sure what EVOO pouches are but I hiked with a guy who often bought smoked salmon pouches and loved them on trail. I can’t say for sure how readily available they are as it wasn’t something I looked for. I also didn’t buy canned sardines but tuna pouches were very easy to find at most resupply stops, so much so I got very sick of it 😂 good luck in your planning :)
I’m starting my PCT adventure in about a month, thanks for this great video it’s exactly what I needed! I’m doing both physical resupply and boxes.
Glad it was useful :) Wishing you all the best on your PCT adventure, your gonna have an awesome time!! Ash
i plan on doing the AT first but PCT doesnt sound too complicated thx to you

How much salmon do you plan to eat and to carry for 4000-6000 kcal/day? - you'll need lots of carbons on trail.

@@ashobrienoutdoors thanks. EVOO = extra virgin olive oil. That’s great to know your friend found lots of smoked salmon.
