The overspent is why you aren't happy narrative is BS . People aren't mad based on the amount they spent . People are mad based on cig not delivering.

CIG can't deliver. No one could deliver. When you make such broad promises about "the best damn space sim ever" everyone imagines their own perfect game, which is different for everyone. No matter what, CIG can never possibly satisfy everyone, and maybe not even a majority.

If you have impulse control problems that's your own fault also I don't see how that's an impulse buy, You have to physically sit there and stare at them as they announce a new ship being made then you have to go to their website to get the ship that they made and then you have to put in your information to get the ship they made and then you have to click buy to get the ship they made.
And they even tell you it's in concept so you know that you're not buying anything except a picture of a ship that they made.
It's kind of crazy how there's people like me that have spent literal thousands on other pay-to-play video games like Star Trek online and they have microtransactions so I can just do it while still logged into the game and it's available instantly. But yet here I stand I've only pledged a vulture and then I have like an extra 125 bucks that I melt things with just to try out new ships. been watching development since 2016 and decided it was good enough to play towards the end of last year. I don't buy concept ships, maybe just maybe have a little self-control in your life and you won't be blowing thousands of dollars off on a video game that does not exist.

I'm a fairly new SC player (about 4 months now). I'm still enjoying playing what is available now, probably because I haven't been playing forever. However I have been developing a theory (and your comment about playing on alt accounts backs this up) that buying ships with real money ruins the game. For two reasons.
    1. AT THE MOMENT (hopefully this will change with time), the only "end goal" to playing the game is to make money to buy ships. Buying ships with real money is (in my mind) basically spending money *so that you don't actually have to play the game*. What's the point in that?
    2. Expectations. For the 45 bucks I spent on my game package / starter ship, I expect a game like any other. Maybe gameplay wise SC isn't great yet, but for 45 dollars it's not bad. Spend $500, and it better be a damn good game. Spend 5000, and there's no way ANY game can ever be good enough to live up to that price tag. It's just asking to be disappointed.
    My 2c.

Early on, buying another ship IRL was the only way to get a new ship. Then after ship shops went up in game, they still wiped those purchases every/every other patch for a good while.
Now that everything is stable I've got about $300 in ships that just sit there.
But, I've been to 2 Citizencon, and followed development because I love the game design talk. For my $1000+, my last 8 years have been fun. But I can see how $30k and not being interested in game dev would be like a cold slap in the balls by this point. Especially with the curse of hindsight.

    • @johnsonallan3503

There used to be wipes (and it may still have new wipes incoming) to clear out every non-real-money-ship you have and you have to grind auec from the start again. You may already noticed the progress is not super fun for the 2nd or 3rd time.
There are some ships that have an advantage on grinding auecs (like the connie or pre-nerfed corsair), which may double, tripple or even 10-100 times multiply your progression rate, which means you can try more new ships in the same time period. (depend on the version and what kind of "bug" we have in those versions)
So, it's like a "pay to have less pain" or "pay so you can have fun earlier" scenario.
Besides, the new ships will be locked behind the paywall for around 2 versions and some ships are still locked (F8C or F7A)
I am not saying that you should buy ships in RL money, just point out why there are people buying them.

While I definitely haven't put too much time into the game myself compared to most (usually hop on and play for a few hours when a new big patch is released, My tolerance for jank is on the lower side), I'm one of the old old old backers who threw money at this thing because he wanted a wing commander / freelancer sequel, I cannot believe it has taken them 10 years to finish squad 42, I figured the MMO would be in development heck for a extremely long time, but I thought I'd at least have the single player game I wanted in the first place by now.
I have avoided Star citizen at this stage of development as much as it can, because I have super low impulse control (a symptom of severe ADHD diagnosed in elementary school back in '97) I know that if I interacted more with the game, the temptation to overspend on things that are shiny and new would be too much for me. It's the same reason why I've never let myself set foot in a casino, and why these days I have to usually avoid most multiplayer games (loot boxes, and timed exclusive skins fuck with my brain a lot). While I'll definitely agree some people are just stupid with their money, from experience if you put a shiny new thing in front of me, and say if you don't buy this within the next two weeks you'll never have a chance to buy it again, can literally cause me to panic, and people with similar disorders to me fall into that reaction extremely easily. And there's a boatload of studies out there pointing to this sort of thing causing the same activity in the brain that a gambling addiction causes.

your comments around the 6:20 mark are really on the nose, perfectly explain a lot of what is going on at CIG. they realize that if they release the game, a lot of people that are putting money into the "Dream machine" will simply stop, because they realize that it's only a game just like all the others.
They have MONETIZED the dream of a Kraken, of a big ship - only, when you get in game and play with it, it's nothing like the dream. It's like the toys and comics of the 80s. a lot of the toys (gijoes, transformers, he-man, etc) had cartoons, and comic books, and the toys were based off of those. purely cashing in on the dream of being in that universe with those characters brought to life, but at least with those toys you could still play with them and dream, in SC when you get in game half the time it's crashing, and there's nothing to do but empty, boring quests. no story. no MMO like wow with deep lore or guilds, raiding other guilds or large scale pvp, most of the funny moments are crashing/bug related, and only then you're laughing while being pissed off and logging out.
What i don't get is how those same people don't compare it rationally to what games are currently out there - SC is basically just elite dangerous crossed with no man's sky, but worse than no man's sky, and far far far buggier than both.

all i got from this was "addicted to hopium and dreamiums" you can back a project but please for the love of god, do it correctly so you can always get your money back (like proper investments) buying pledge ships sadly doesnt grant you a refund thanks to ToS bs. maybe they learn from this mistake.
My only issue with SC and the levels of hype they have fostered is, if this flops upon release (whenever that is) this will change the face of kickstarters/early backers to a point i think you see a few sites shift on how they protect backers from scams or no release.
comparing games to tangible products you consume on a daily basis makes partial sense but also does not, yes you waste money on these consumables but you are still getting a finished product in front of you. SC is neither finished nor has a finish line in sight and that is the biggest difference. they could easily in the next 12 months fall into the red and end up shutting studios or having staff leave due to lack of funds. thats the big problem here.

The moment you realize "server meshing" has existed for years, WoW had it on release 20 years ago, ESO has it, many MMOs actually have it, remember Dungeon instances? And some you can even select the server you are on at the top right corner? Like you are in shard 1, and you can change the shard connection to maybe fight the boss that is already UP at the next shard, whatever it may be, you are swapping servers at the point using a replication layer.
I may sound negative, but there are ZERO possibilities of this tech to work the way CIG is marketing to be, it will be "close enough" but client connections is varied, meaning the replication layer will have different speeds for different players when adding information to server location, so the "smooth" transition won`t be as smooth as it may appear to be, and to populate the shards properly with up to 500 players (which is not ideal as it will cause many problems performance-wise to the client side), they MUST properly balance the barriers or shard transitions in a way that doesn`t create problems, like hangars, cities, bunkers, POIs and planets, and to be precise I did a stupid calculation using current server performance up-tick, they need at least 8 server shards for a single planet, not taking into consideration POIs or bunkers or stations, just planet, to allow for an "smooth-ish" transition and keep the server close to 30 frames for each of the 500 players in each shard, which also needs its own replication layer server per 2 shards... It`s ALOT, and it`s very expensive, which is why most gaming companies compromise, and get back down to real world scenarios.
So either the servers will have drastically lower frames and up-ticks, or the "smooth" transition is not going to be that smooth, and we will have loading freezes and hiccups while transition from shard to shard.

It's called the long game and without whales.. er.. I mean people like you we might have not gotten this far! But seriously, jokes aside, the game needs funding and who's gonna fund it if not us? Whether it's a $35 starter package or the full meal $35K.. everyone spends within their means.
Did CIG spend all the money up till this point wisely, probably not, and so what .. if they still deliver? A lot of company spend money poorly and without people believing strongly enough in the original vision, the dream dies.. simple, as it should.
Of course not everyone will subscribe to this point of view but one that should be considered.
Spend what you want BUT know that the project could STILL fail. If you can do that, then you're golden.. live the dream until it's fulfilled or it's gone but don't complain about money you can't get back or about people spending to make your dream come true.

It is Clearly a Concern about a General Post Release Topic about Funding. All Cash Shop Ships would be released Overpowered, and then Nerfed later to make room for the next Overpowered Ship to be released. I am fine with selling ships to fund the development of the game. I did set a limit to my little experiment though, an amount I considered I can just through out the window without regrets if the worst should prove right about SC. I’m still well within said amount and while I am disappointed about the way the development is managed by CIG, I consider it worth having given this a try. I think it’s good to have expectations and dreams, but it’s also important to have a reality check once in a while and set limits to our craziness. If you don’t expect anything, you’ll never be disappointed. If you expect everything, it will be a world of disappointment. What I worry about is, share holder value. Like... in a real company, these sort of monetary values (which inevitably go toward paying salaries, developing products, etc) come from investors in exchange for a piece of the company (and a share of future profits, with the ability to sell off your shares for something in the future whether a lot or a little... but something). But... with the crowd funding model, these are basically just gifts to the company (in return for some developments). Now it's much more of a transactional thing, if you want a ship you 'buy it' (pledge for it?), but in the first years these people should've been getting shares of the company or something (in a normal company). Feels bad seeing these people even refer to their gifts or 'pledges' as 'investments' (they are not investments in the real sense of the word). Is CIG a non-profit or charity, no? My two cents.

As someone who raised and bred purebred German Shepherds for 20 years and even sold them to law enforcement, a few things to look out for.
It pays to know the parent's temperament. If one of them is highly aggressive, it's something to look out for. Secondly, even with German Shepherds, it's highly rare that they would bite a kid. Most dogs love kids. Especially when raised with them. We had one German Shepherd with former police training bite a kid, but only because he picked up a stick near the family which she perceived as a weapon and pinned the child to the ground by the arm. That was mostly the police training. The breed of the puppy will tell you a lot as well.
Other than that, out of the 100's of GS we've had, none of them showed aggression towards kids. If raised properly, most larger breeds look at children as something to protect, not harm.

there is a way to go about this, it can happen still, but things really need to change... it's not just a game at this point, it is a dream for a lot of people.
a lot of the game mechanics were fundamentally interwoven with the lore and now they are changing game mechanics into cliche game logic and replacing unique and innovative interaction with what can 't be described as anything but heavily dated and generic npc looting mechanics... now things are just unravelling and tearing at the seams, as now that one has been forced into something different, the puzzle piece no longer fits, the wine no longer matches the meal, etc...
it was just a matter of thinking of some solutions and actually doing it, too. some of the solutions weren't even technical lol! they were just organizing and artistic planning. like some mechanics that seem to be axed for not being doable are literally a 3 month rookie mod away using assets they created for the replacement or just something else they didn't think to use as a solution...
the experience they concepted was incredible, it just needed some polish. however, doesn't help having 100's-1000's of people yelling at them for reworks for things like a item bank paper doll, even though the ship with a suit locker was supposed to be a character progression mechanic that saves time when the player earns the feature... or things like losing cargo and blaming it on a physics system when cargo was non physical and incapable of being moved, or skipping across pads before IFCS hard-capped speed. that's not meant as a cheap shot, it's just meant to make a point.
medical has no purpose now. people backspace in a heartbeat for T3 injuries just to bypass using the panel to treat injuries. no real reason for Apollo, no real reason for Endeavor Hope config, no real reason for prosthetics, no real reason for stat progression, as people will just have 20 Nursas in a cargo hold and every character will inevitably end up max level and max rep in everything, with no real risk and only a small dip in a never ending bank account tracking bar chart. could have had injury based downed states that allowed people to be dragged while shooting, but no, don't do anything like that lol, just make it so any bed arbitrarily respawns based on proximity...
the list goes on. i can only repair so much damage myself.

Server meshing itself isn't impossible, it's been done since Acheron's Call pioneered it in 1998 or so. CIG's problem is they never actually designed the servers to be compatible with seamless zoning handoffs from the get go, or they were overly ambitious with how large they could get away with making the individual servers in the mesh.
Major centers such as Microtech needs to be divided into like 5 servers. One for the Habs and Hospital, One for the Commons, 1 for the Spaceport, 1 for the immediate area 50k around the spaceport, and then 1 for the rest of the planet. And your handoff/seamless zoning takes place on the tram, and is no different than running across the entirety of the world in AC1.
The only part that is new is dynamically sizing zones.

What you said about that they never design servers to be compatible with seamless zoning is true but how they would done it without server meshing. Without a bit of experience in IT it's hard to grasp what they are doing. I agree with that major zones should be divided in more servers but they said that's their plan with **Dynamic server meshing**, we are not yet close to that and will take a long time, I hope I'm wrong here.

@@morganlefay-k4c all of which more or less existed in AC1, and every major MMO since. Though most of them did use a 6 second tick and client side authoritative models to adjust and compensate for network fuckery. But the meshing itself isn't new, and item persistence isn't new, but generally was restricted to a couple of hours because items continuing to exist in the environment for anything over a few hours severely increases the overall network and computational load, and CIG has taken it to the extreme at the detriment of performance. Which is why CIG is nuts to believe they can sustain Stanton itself on less than about a dozen servers/clusters.
By the time we get a couple thousand corpses stranded in the middle of the various heavenly bodies, plus a couple thousand gowns lefts in the medical bays, AND then toss on the thousands upon thousands of bottles we're dropping everywhere, and it's really no wonder why trying to run Stanton on a single cluster just doesn't work.

I run a small business in real life, marketing is the king and one thing I’ve learned is that you can’t ever be content with your current client base you always have to be searching for new clients and judging by the atls sales nothing gonna change CIG anytime soon

CIG lives from the great dream of humanity to conquer space. Since it is not accomplishable in this lifetime we try to live this dream through this SIM.
Unfortunately CIG is now exploiting this dream in a bad way. Best wishes to all!
Don't get depressed. Look inside yourself, everyone can find new resources to build upon. 🌟🌻

Odd that isn’t in yet? It’s not exactly server meshing levels of coding and it’s not tied to any network functionally.

I don't even to THINK about how much I spent on tobacco, or the 'odd' bottle of booze. Or even, ever since the days of PS 1 how much I have spent on video games. Over the course of a lifetime putting aside what HAS to be spent on essentials (rent, utilities, medical etc) the amount spent on what amounts (in the grand scheme of things) to rubbish, self gratification etc is staggering. So why worry about it? Life is what it is, often short, often unfair, never predictable and always full of surprises good and bad. Is what it is folks.
So apart from doing the best you can in living a life it does not matter WHAT you have spent on your dreams and aspirations as long as it means SOMETHING to you.

I think of it as entainment. If I would have spent the time in bar or cinima instead of playing SC, what would I have wasted there? Anyhow, the money is not gone, it just somewhere else. If I spent my money on my bank account it just disappears. So at the end of the day, I am still ok with what I have wasted in the last 12 years.

I've gone all the way around and back again.
I signed up before the games was announced, that a sub-10k backer number. I think I was like 6229 or something. Managed to get deep up to about £800, but lost faith in 2014 or 2015 and managed to get a refund.
Now, I've actually signed back up paid £80 for a decent starter and play it like it's any other game. I don't love it like a fanboy, or hate it like a spurned lover. It's just an impressive looking tech demo that can kill some time over the holidays.
    It's fine.

Imagine if you own every vehicle currently in the game. Playing the game with each vehicle for 40 hours, would be total of 180 weeks (if you play 40 hours a week, every week) - which comes to around 3.5 years, every week 40 hours of gaming only SC. Who needs it all? Who can reasonably claim they need them all? Some content creators I agree on, as they make money out of purchasing new vehicles as soon as they come out.

I hope most of these are fake man lol. I feel like a dumbass blowing something like $300 overall on SC. I knew early on that this game wasnt going to be anywhere near what they claimed in 2015. Took the L..$300 down the drain. Don't get me wrong, I am fairly well off, could easily buy everything CIG sells on their site and not bat an eye. Im a car guy, got a decent sized collection of high end rides. I have blown (sometimes stupidly) untold hundreds of thousands of dollars on cars and tune parts for em, Same as these people on imaginary flying machines. but well...least cars retain some value lol.
