Percy D nah... I had no problem with starting. BTW... the problem re-surfaced after 2 years... and now the switch replacement does not work for me anymore... ☹️
Many will have brake lights still on after replacing the switch. It is critical to PULL the white actuating pin (switch plunger) ALL THE WAY OUT from the switch BEFORE installing the switch. If you pushed on the plunger prior to install, the switch is not setup to adjust properly. The actuating pin adjusts automatically, but not if it hasn't been pulled out prior to install.
This happened to my 01' ML320 3 times now. After 5 years, gear wouldn't release, flatbedded to Dealer. 6 months ago cost me $60 with parts and labor, but was able to drive. Yesterday BAS/ESP and ETS lights came on, no brake lights, but would shift. Got 2 switches from MB only junkyard for $10. Installed in under 30min. Tip- take off the middle brake light and aim it forwards so you can see the lights. Removed positive terminal for 10min. ETS light was now out, drive for 200M and BAS turns off.

Never would have figured to hold clip and turn clockwise, so easy. Dealer wanted an hour of labor @ $170.00 plus part at $30. I bought the part for $30 and saved 170. Great, Thanks....... Actually the BLS can fail in various ways that's why different symptoms are reported. The 4 main fails are: 1 Trans wont shift - stuck in P 2 BAS/ESP illuminated 3 Brake warning light + beeping 4 No brake lights Replace for any of above.
My ml wouldn't shift out of park the other day, thank god for that little tab by the shifter. Just ordered my new switch so hopefully it'll solve the problem. Quite annoying considering I just had the switch replace less than 2 months ago.
Fixed it; the little white nub was stuck pushed in, now everything's back to normal. It has been bitterly cold up here in Wisconsin, so maybe that had something to do with it.
Thanks again. Do you know if the brakelight switch effects the shifting of the car? A couple of times recently before I changed the switch, my car would shift into neutrel while excelerating. I would have to turn the car off and restart it to get it to shift properly. It happened twice. I hope this has fixed that problem.? I guess I'll find out??

hello friend i have the problem of my 270ml cdi 2004 cranking about 2 seconds and it stops without starting 5 to 7 times without starting i have changed the starter motor and changed the ignition antenna i have checked all the fuse boxes i have found All are going well I have changed the battery and without news but when I connect it with cables with another car working it starts directly. now I do not have to think about any reley that is main! do you know if he has any ??? please help ...
changed the brake switch out on my 2003 e320 but still have the RED stop vehicle warning and the gear shift is still stuck in park..seemed simple.. didn't seem to reset..what did I miss? Thanks Canada
Well i am lookin for amswera. I would like to know did process allow you to now drive your car now?? The reason i ask is because i cannot put my SUV in drive, nor reverse,. Nor neutral nothing, i can't shift gear at all. Now.last year i had the same problem and was told to replace The Assembly Shift Gear, Now with the same exact Problem i am being told to get brake light switch sensor. Just tryn to figure this out??? Help someone
The problem is that these switches doesn't last long. Both from aftermarket as original mercedes fail after a couple of years, sometimes after few months. The main contact is pretty sturdy, but the secondary one is as fragile as tin foil. Bad engineering or programmed obsolecence? Who knows!
This is a reply from a Mercedes mechanic on the Benzword forum. 2005 was the last year that there was a physical Brake Light Sw. under the dash. Brake Lights are now actuated by the Release Switch inside the Brake Booster. This switch cannot be replaced and a used or new Brake Booster must me installed.
regards to your gear: gear will get stuck if the switch isn't connected(safety hazard). This also confirmed that the brake light switch did not need to be replaced. There's no way you can put your car in reverse with a broken brake switch.
The switch itself cost me £10.50 from mercedes dealer. And the more modern ones don't have break light switch there it's on the vela pod . To fix mine all I done was disconnect the battery and it righted itself happy ending.
you can buy genuine brake switch for $25 ...i replaced the BS on my ml320 for a URO parts like this one, it lasted 8 months kkkk waste of time and money
It's really frustrating to have someone take the time and let other people benefit from their experience only to have the results come out horrible. Why the need to rush thru the instructions, including you can't see any of what he's showing, and what's wrong with having the camera in a fixed position and using its ability to rotate and zoom controls. That's why the camera has them. Applaud the effort, but next time hope you proof video, and put yourself into you're audiences head's
I have a 2000 E320. I had the same issue BAS/ESP light came on immediately when i turned on the car and stepped on my brakes. Fuses were good and so were the brake light bulbs. I went underneath and tweaked the position of the brake light switch(pulled it out, placed it back in, gave it a firm press) Focus on that white knob at the tip of the switch(press it over and over) not sure how or what exactly fixed the issue but that's exactly what i did and my brake lights all work fine. good luck

Questions: Did your gear get stuck in Parking as well? I too have the BAS/ESP light on also the break light will Not go on when I push down the break.
There's an override for that with a screwdriver - search online

Yup, I had the BAS/ESP light turning on all the time. I think it would definitely affect the cars performance so change it out

Hey! I assume you have read the codes on the car? What were they? My best guess is that it's either the crankshaft/camshaft sensor or the fuel pump.
