The 2022 Genesis G80 Sport Takes On BMW And Mercedes

  • This is the sedan Lexus could have built and should have built, but it turns out the only Asian luxury car company willing to take the fight to Germany is Genesis. If you're looking for a luxury sedan with poise, refinement, comfort, high predicted reliability and a lower MSRP, the G80 should be on your list. If you want a better dealer experience and more customization, you'll find that somewhere else but be prepared to pay extra for it...

    Genesis G80 is very much understating their mileage I have had this vehicle for nearly 5 months now and over 9k miles My highway driving it get 29-31 MPG combined normally around 23 MPG so all in all not bad for a car that has 4400lbs and 375 HP It drives alot better that the e-class and is way more comfortable than the BMW

    I’m absolutely enamored with Genesis and how they’ve evolved over the past couple of years. Having gone from Lexus to Infiniti, I’ve wanted something else without going to European brands because of their historical reliability. As such, I wanted to stay with an Asian brand, and believe Genesis entered the market at the right time. They truly remind me of Lexus & Acura during their “genesis”, yet with something completely different in terms of their aesthetics. I’m excited about leasing for the first time and doing so with a G80 Sport. My fiancée is also excited about purchasing a GV70 Sport. I truly don’t believe Genesis can be beat for their incredible value. - Dope, detailed review as always, Alex! 🔥

    When I hear this "If your front seat passenger is looking for the same comforts as the driver...." it reminds that front seat passenger is known as "the wife" in most cases :). And yeah, my wife had been complaining about her seat isn't as comfy as mine (I drive 99% of the time when we are going places together) forever in every car we bought so far. Thanks Alex for another great review video.

    Great review Alex. As someone who's 6'6" and with decades of chronic spine issiues I'm so happy Genesis went on the comfort side of ride. It does my head in how stiffly sprung cars are today even hatchbacks that are supposed to be daily drivers rattle your teeth loose. Most cars spend 99 percent of their lives on our shit pot hole riddled roads so having a comfortable riding car is for me fantastic.

    To answer your question: I got the 2023 G80 awd 2.5t Sport Prestige. Sticker was $64,650 US and got it $58,650 with two Genesis rebates last Christmas. 30+ mpg on the interstate and I can still pass anything in my way with ease. Traded in my 2022 GV70 3.5t with 31k flawless miles on it and loved that motor when I needed it, problem is you just don’t need that often. It’s a work car that puts on 3k miles a month so the interstate mileage matters to me, but still not as much as comfort. Sometimes I lull myself into thinking this is gramp’s luxury sedan and then I put the 245 and meaty 275 staggered to work and remember it has Sport in its name for a reason.
    Good review btw…I like it when you don’t quite talk as fast as you did when you started because your reviews are oh so good with details 👍🏻

    TWO absolutely HUGE ISSUES going against this car: First, no folding rear seats is HUGE oversight. If I'm going to have one vehicle in my family, it HAS to have a folding rear seat. Midsize German luxury cars have been doing this for DECADES! So there's no excuse. Also, the mpg numbers are laughably terrible. 16 mpg city and 20 combined? Are you kidding me? The 540i xdrive gets 23 and 26 respectively. EVEN THE TWIN TURBO m550i xdrive gets better mpg at 17 and 20 combined -- with 523hp! I'm an old school Hyundai fan, but I'm not sure what they are thinking here.

    • @sprague49
      @sprague49 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I like folding seats too but in Korea and China, the back seat is reserved for important people, not lumber from Lowe's. LOL. Unfortunately, Asian sedans are no longer designed with Americans and Europeans in mind.

      @markmiller3279 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sprague49 Exactly. We're a very minor market for Genesis. I do think they should have made the seat fold, as it's an easy feature to include, but in. Asia this is often chauffeur-driven. That's why the passenger seat controls for the rear-seat passenger, a feature it shares with the G90.

      Honestly, the prior gen G80 was a much better value. And I believe they came mostly in RWD form, whether the 3.3T or the 5.0. Also, the looks of the prior one, while more conservative, was more coherent. This new one is sharper and louder, but not necessarily prettier. I also dislike that they've employed the corporate language in making all their models resemble one another. Loved how the prior G70, G80, and G90 looked different from each other. Still, they're leaps and bounds above the Japanese brands. It'd be interesting to see if Kia decides to create a luxury offspring of its own.

    I recently rented a 3.5 for my trip from Nashville to New Orleans. This machine is awesome! I believe it has closer 400hp instead of 375hp. The car accelerates using smooth, effortless power. The ride and handling are in par with the Germans and Japanese. It garners attention and shout from people as I pass by. I have a rear drive 3.5. And the ride is smooth and well damped on the moon crater like streets of New Orleans. There is no perfect car. My only issues with this one are; the trunk is small for such a large car, the engine start stop mechanism feels as if someone has hit the car in the rear when it engages from a stop, it takes premium fuel and the rear seat doesn't fold. However, given the car's capabilities, I can live with those issues. I plan to sample the GV80 for comparison. It being an SUV with the same engine and more cargo room is what I really need. I just hope that it performs as well as the sedan when I push on the accelerator pedal. Oh, and the brakes are awesome!

    The issue with the entire Genesis brand is that despite being competitive in the segments they compete in, they can't shake off the previous reputation of their parent company for making unreliable and unsafe cars. The recent recalls for engine fires makes the situation worse too. This is where Lexus and Acura have an advantage over them. That aside, apart from the M and AMG performance models, and the Blackwing performance models of Cadillac (don't know why Genesis won't offer their own performance line), this beats every entry in its segment. Would also love to see a full size SUV from them that should knock the Escalade and Range Rover out of their top spots.

Until the 540i or E450 is beat outright, I'll stay with the 540i w/all wheel drive and/or the E450 w/4matic as the best 2 examples of the mid size sedan winners. If it were just a leasing argument, the G80 would be fine. However if it's a long term ownership/experience, The 5 series or E class would still be my 1st choices. Better fuel economy in both german options. I think the M440 grand coupe would be a ideal option for this segment.

      I think they're not very comparable. Acura is aiming for the premium market; even their website says "premium" instead of "luxury". They are okay with baking compromises into their cars, like the poor packaging of the TLX, because they seem to have a smaller R&D budget. Lexus sells on cushy comfort and reliability and is fine with shamelessly recycling from Toyota because their customers don't care about differentiation. Genesis seems to be directly targeting Mercedes (and the other Germans) with luxurious interiors, good technology, and careful tuning. Of course they'll still compete for buyers that are more ambivalent about these features, but I think Genesis has found a good niche by offering "Mercedes on a budget".

      Have you driven an RX? An ES? I have, and they are far superior to the Camry. Now are the Lexus brands worth the premium? That's a different question.
      Listen, I can't stand the RAV4. There are better small SUVs out there, or at least competitive offerings. The fact remains, however, that the RAV4 is the RAV$$$.
