The Hotwalk Carbon is a $1000 balance bike for toddlers. Yes, I tested it.

  • The Hotwalk Carbon by Specialized is a race-ready balance bike with no expenses spared. But do we really need a $1000 training bike for toddlers? Today, we'll find out. We'll have a very close look at the Hotwalk Carbon, talk about the pros and cons, and then actually ride it on a real mountain bike trail.
I borrowed this Hotwalk Carbon and will miss it. Given the right discount or used price, I will strongly consider buying one.

As a dad that had 2 toddlers outgrow the same Hotwalk, biggest thing missing from that S-works is the footrests. This was a great feature to allow kids to learn what it feels like to have your feet supported on the bike while making turns. This translates perfect to pedals later on. My youngest never needed training wheels.

@@richardhaselwood9478 Yeah, I removed the training wheels before our kids even saw the bike. More work for the parents for about a week or so, faster learning curve. #2 had a run bike, so that was even easier... would bomb around the pump track. Gives them independence a bit which is great.

No child 'needs' training wheels! They form BAD habits! They make it more difficult for the child to learn how to balance.
All training wheels accomplish is to assure over protective parents.
Remove the drivetrain and pedals, lower the saddle on any bike and you have a strider bike. If the child is struggling to balance, get a beach towel, wrap it around the child's chest hold the ends behind their shoulders to support their weight, help them get a feel for balance. That worked after 20 minutes with my daughter.
I rode a tricycle as a kid. I started cornering it on 2 wheels and my folks immediately got me a BMX bike. I crashed a couple times. Dad says get right back on ! Mom was not watching! Then I caught on and discovered my new found freedom. I still remember that day! Haven't quit riding in 58 years!

Our first son quickly outgrew his first balance bike, a Stoy, which was this basic thing with foam wheels and no brakes. He started going so fast that we felt a back brake was needed, and good for practice. We then got the Early rider big foot 12, for about 200 Euro. This bike also has air filled, large and grippy rubber tyres, a rear brake and is in aluminum that is still light, but way more sturdy. The lowest seat height of the Early rider is also lower than the Stoy, no problem for even a 1 year old to fit over.
Our son rode it hard on tarmac and trails. The grip from the knobby and soft tires was a game changer. No front wheel slips on corners and a softer ride over bumps helped build his confidence.
So specs does make a difference, but there's no need for the high price Specialized are asking for. Especially for a carbon bike that might not survive more than one or two kids (resell value?). I know the Early riders has good second hand value.

He just turned 5 and we got him the Specialized Rip Rock 20 and it has been so amazing to see what he can ride now that he has gears and bigger wheels. I'm just stoked on balance bikes in general (carbon or not!) and how training wheels are not needed anymore. Thanks for this video Seth!

Spending that kind of money on a kid's toy, that they're going to outgrow in a couple of months? 👎🏼 It's just not necessary. This is purely a status symbol for the parents. Because no toddlers going to give a shit what bike they are riding as long as they're having fun.
Might as well get a t-shirt for your kid that says "my rich parents spoil me."

    • @slowcyclist4324
      @slowcyclist4324 ปีที่แล้ว

Tbh, what’s wrong with their parents doing that if they want?
I would buy that for my kid if I could stretch my dollars a bit more. While I settled for the cheaper aluminium hotwalk, I’m still regretting not getting the carbon one instead.

You guys have a problem if you don’t realise that it’s the parents money, and they can spend it in any damn way as they please, even if it means throwing it into a lake.

@@JB-1138 you pay top money for the best. in this case you are paying for the best materials made by one of the best(most expensive, innovative, high-end) bike manufacturers. If you want cheap, there are cheap alternatives everywhere. But if you want the best, you pay top money for the best..

I went with a strider for my kids and then went up to more expensive bikes once they could peddle. When my son was 4 we got him a Trek pre caliber and I truly believe the almost 10 pound weight difference between it and department store bikes helped him go directly from the strider to the peddle bike with no training wheels. And I've now got him his first bike with gears and suspension for next summer a Giant XTC. He's very excited.

So Seth I’ve been watching your channel since the darker days of Covid and found myself entertained, and I learned some thing too.
Your review of the hotwalk, carbon balance bike seemed to me a bit of a stretch, but to your credit and talent as an entertainer and cinematographer, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. But best of all is your honesty and your sense of humor. I believe in everything you say, and would purchase anything that you recommend.
    Keep on peddling!

These would, and will, sell very well in my hometown of Bentonville, AR. Bikes are everything around here and people got the cash to spend. We have a large Strider store downtown on the square but i fully expect to see these rolling around downtown and on the Slaughter Pen trails soon.

When my oldest was a toddler, balance bikes were just becoming more mainstream. I don't think Strider was really on the map, just Skuut (wooden balance bike). But they were still expensive so I made one for my kiddo. I took a 12" wheel kid bike and just removed the pedals, chain, 1 piece crank, bearings, etc. I wiped away the grease and it was awesome. It wasn't as light as this carbon bike, but had 12" pneumatic tires at least. When, just before their 4th birthday, I watched my kiddo coast on the sidewalk the entire width of the house, I slapped those parts back on and the rest is history.
So yeah, I'd not be the target audience for this bike, but it is pretty rad.

Just the video of you riding was worth the price of admission! Seriously though, I would view this as an exercise in how far they can go with something that is the simplest form of bicycle in existence. They have balance bike competitions for kids? Never knew. Anyways, I actually appreciate the engineering that went into this... except that they nailed everything but getting the seat low enough 😉

Alaskan bike shop owner here - You nailed it with the avocado analogy. My wife comes back from the store and I can't even look at a receipt. It's like 10$ an avocado, and they seem to last about 8 hours before they turn brown. Anyways I digress, fun video!
