Coming from the finale of The bear and this song perfectly captured all the emotions in those last scenes. Beautiful song !!
Bittersweet ending and his mom.... That was a lot right there too
Probably my favorite use of a song as part of an ending since Fight Club's use of "Where is My Mind?". This just fit the entire mood perfectly.
I couldn’t have said it better myself!
I completely agree! It fit in perfectly with The Bear. First time hearing, amazing

You read my mind 😂
Yep .. How music can be evoked through film is such a wonderful thing. It's inspirational ✨
Been listening their songs since 1988 ... I am 54 now. What a journey. Well done guys. A fan from Athens, Greece (not Athens, Georgia)
R.E.M. thanks for being in my youth! i am 46 now and still feeling young when I listen to your music, thanks for it!
47 and still a listening fan!
@@d.a.thorndike8772 48 and still loving REM
You're not alone
The same here
60.
REM one of the greatest bands ever
Amen
100%
Are we talking Murmur, Document, Fables of The Reconstruction, Reckoning R.E.M or the nonsense that came later?
One of the loveliest songs ever recorded.
Seriously.
I could live inside this song.
Big mood❤
This whole album was a masterpiece
Shiny happy people?!
@@judgenutmeg6935Thanks.. "Shiny Happy People"?
is
Looking back, I wished they'd opened the Monster tour with that song. And then just go right into What's the Frequency Kenneth?@@logicn.reasoning9744
I had it on cassette tape 😊
What a song. What a band.
Couldn’t agree more Kevin…sublime song
Absolutely
It's a very beautiful song 🫂🙏❤️
Maybe, just maybe, one day more people will realize what a truly remarkable band REM will always be.
They were vety popular, right there with U2
Unfortunately, they are being largely forgotten as time is going on. It pains me to say it.
I’m 14 and I love this band. I wish I was alive during this generation. I love 60s to 90s music.
I know many fans of REM and I am one of them!! ❤
I’m starting to realize this band is legit like Led Zeppelin
Just watched the finale of Season 2 of The Bear and couldn’t get here quickly enough to listen to this song again. What a powerful ending to that episode and what a powerful showcasing of this song. Chemistry. 💥
Bloody brilliant choice!
Great song and it fits the the Bear so well
One of their most beautiful songs. The instruments used and the composition of this song is incredible.
They were all such incredible musicians!
This song brings me to tears. Amazing band. Maybe the best and most original American band of all-time.
Yep
And it's such a beautiful song ... could be my favorite REM song 🥲🫂❤️
The problem with REM is that it is hard to find what song is the best or the top or the one we like most. It is impossible to do with this great band. As for this song: it is incredibly beautiful! Eternally grateful to REM for the beauty they shared with us.
100% this one for me.
Depends on my mood at the time always one to suit
This is there best song there most known one is everybody hurts and there most successful single is loosing my religion imitation of life is the most creative one and the worst is shiny happy people 😂 when they sold out
“My shoes are gone, my life spent”..I have no idea what that means but it brings me to the brink of tears every time I hear it and always will. Just..just ..so difficult to put into words what this song means to me other than i can explain the feeling which is that my heart swells and my senses are heightened to a point where I feel so present that when it ends I just want to replay it.
Oh man, I agree! Heartbreaking ,simple and beautiful lyrics and the ambience that this song creates just really takes you over
Stipe definitely has a way with words
I think it's a metaphor for being on your feet. At some point you stop to collect yourself and realize you've aged and your "shoes are worn".
💯 Same
It means exactly what it makes you feel
"My hand’s tired, my heart aches."
For sure brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
Glad to hear this on The Bear today. Oh how I miss those Saturday nights in Athens in the 80's. Would love to hear something new from these guys. Their songs always take me back to some of the most important times in my life.
Lucky
Yep the Bear killed it on itself but that soundtrack...made us unable to forget even if WE wanted 😅
This song or Oh, My Heart?
couldn't agree more
Wasn’t this album released in the 90s?
For me, this is in my top 10 R.E.M. tracks.
Adam Withers the best REM song
agree! In my top 5!
indeed Adam!!!
easily top 10 REM tracks.. but let's be honest, there are so many less 'mainstream' REM tracks to choose from, and only 10 places up for grabs.. 🤔
Agreed!!
REM.....a band that is like no other....even the Beatles would have been jealous of their plethora of creative songs.....
Aussie Slayer REM are better than the Beatles. this coming from a brit
I seriously doubt The Beatles were jealous of anyone
Paul McCartney was of Brian Wilson to some extent.
The Beatles and R.E.M. bestride the rest of the music universe like genius collosi.
SLAYER HellAwaits 💯
This could be the saddest dusk
I've ever seen
Turn to a miracle
High alive
My mind is racing
As it always will
My hand is tired, my heart aches
I'm half a world away here
My head sworn
To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
And hold it
Go it alone
Hold it along and hold, hold
Oh, lonely deep sit hollow
I'm half a world
Half the world away
My shoes are gone
My life spent
I had too much to drink
I didn't think
And I didn't think of you
I guess that's all I needed
To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
And hold it
Blackbirds, backwards, forwards and fall and hold, hold
Oh, this lonely world is wasted
Pathetic eyes high alive
Blind to the tide that turns the sea
This storm it came up strong
It shook the trees
And blew away our fear
I couldn't even hear
To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
And hold it
To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul
To go it alone
And hold it along
Haul it along
And hold it
Blackbirds, backwards, forwards, and fall and hold hold
This could be the saddest dusk
I've ever seen
Turn to a miracle
High alive
My mind is racing
As it always will
My hands tired, my heart aches
I'm half a world away and go
playa Thank you
playa This song should be dedicated to all the sad suicide deaths ! Rem , thank you my friends! REM , remember every moment
Thanx for Lyrik's 😉
Thanks!!!
Did Michael Stipe write these lyrics do you know?
One of the greatest bands of all time.
My favorite song ever. Achingly beautiful. If it’s not pretty enough to make you weep you’ve lived a much easier life than mine.
Eric Malone Agreed. The other REM song that does this to me is "You are my everything".
Or we're not gay
Rem songs often make me sad
I've had such a hard life too
It's one of the best songs ever
This song means so much and more to me.... half a world away is literally this my issue :(
Country feedback is one of there best songs
56 & been a fan for 40 years (since Murmur). And went to UGA in Athens, GA!
56 too .... cottaging in Muskoka ... Nightswimming
I'm hoping "The Bear" blows this past 1M views and into that 5M views range. It's a dope ass song.
The bear used this song so well it almost brought me to tears
I never had heard this song before watching The Bear. Such an awesome song!
This song does need some series to be appreciated. This album made music history bro. To even think any member of REM cares about the views on this song is a joke.
@@ArbiterDan Let's just break down how boomer detached your comment is. The song doesn't need a series to be appreciated, however the views on it doubled since that episode aired. The album did make history, but that was in the early 90's. Meaning almost everyone under 30 has never heard the song, let alone knows the significance of the album. To think any member blah blah blah. Yes, they do, they licensed the song to The Bear to use. Many artist strictly prohibit this. I could give you 10 examples of top artists who will never allow their songs to be used in tv. So yes, REM does care about that exposure. The only joke is your boomer ass detached comment. You should be excited that a new generation has been exposed to this gem of a song and I hope the delve deeper into not only the album, but REM's music catalogue. A lot of bangers in there.
The Bear is making me rediscover REM again. I loved these songs, glad I have found them again.
there's no music like REM anymore
drolgh8 that is very good to hear
if it happens thank you. with this world of generic pop crap made by execs in an office it would be a breath of fresh air. please send link when ready. good luck
my mind is racing as it always will.
Do you have a web page o a youtube page for your music? I want to hear it.
The Decemberists are quite up there.
This song is a prophetic hot air balloon of breathy reality, I've loved it since I heard it, it has been a part of my life.
One of the best REM songs ever...
Gem of a song R.E.M. Fits perfectly in my hearts pocket!
Nice words.
missyA1958 nicely said Missy I might have to barrow that from you😉
Beautiful beautiful song
I was obsessed with this song for awhile in the 90s when I was in a deep depression, I used to always think that the lyrics were "This lonely world is wasted on better guys, and high life", but listening to it now for the first time in decades I've just realised that the lyrics actually are "This lonely world is wasted on pathetic eyes".
It really is a great song. This could be the saddest dusk I've ever seen, indeed.
"This lonely world is wasted". Heartbreaking. But thank you Michael Stipe for saying in 5 words what I could never express in a million words. What a beautiful song and video, which I can really relate to.
My brother of 33 years old lost his battle to cancer after 6 years and this was the first song i needed to listen to when driving home from the funeral Friday
Hugs
"This could be the saddest dusk ever seen". Condolences to you
my condolences
Quite young…I feel you and hope you’ll get better days
Condolences. A brilliant song for you.
Thank You Bear ❤
For me,the greatest song of all of time.I know 99% won't agree but to me this song is perfection and brings back so many brilliant memories of a great time in my life when it 1st came out.Genius song
Love this song as well. At college and loving life. I just wish my life could be like it was when I first heard this song
This song and "You are the everthing" are the two songs that make me cry every time I listen. They're both beautiful, sad and nostalgic in equal measures.
Agreed ❤
Every single R.E.M. song is a good song. I still don't know how they did it.
I would have to agree with you. I didnt care for their later albums, but they weren't bad music, just not gripping like the early and mid career recordings
The finale of the bear just brought me back to maderia beach 1992. Best years I'm 48 been listening for many years. So beautiful
This is one of those songs that even if I haven't listened to it recently, i still know all the words..
Every song by this band is a masterpiece.
Except "dont go back to rockville" , "cuyahoga" and "cant get there fro here" . The others yes 1000% masterpiece
Cuyahoga's one of my very favourites!
@@sahimmoamed2690 What the heck, why don't you like these songs? Especially "Cuyahoga" is so good!
@@omfgh4x To who did you reply to? And what did you mean, that you don't like "Shiny Happy People"? It's not that bad, but it's just too simplistic and "really fruity, kind of bubblegum song", as Stipe described it, who hated it initially (although he kind of changed his mind later), and was embarrassed that it became a hit, and the band didn't include it in their "In Time" compilation, and rarely performed it live. Not one of my favorites.
@@sahimmoamed2690 _Cuyahoga_ *not* a masterpiece?!
This could be the saddest dusk I’ve ever seen , turn into a miracle.
And my mind is racing, as it always will…
I had too much to drink , I didn’t think , I didn’t think of you
The storm that came up strong, that shook the trees and blew away our fear….
Really every single word of these lyrics masterpieces of poetry.
Thank you R.E.M.
I FINALLY WANT TO SEE R.E.M. LIVE AGAIN ! ! ! 😭😭😭
Such a beautiful song that leaves me with a lump in the throat and goosebumps, I'm so glad my parents introduced this band to me while I was growing up.
R.E.M. music was the OST of my teenager days in the 90s, and only thing I can say (feeling nostalgic, homesick and greatfull) is "thanks u Mills, Berry, Buck and Stipe, from the bottom of my heart"
Perfect song from an amazing album, one of my favorites EVER.
Mike Mills comes in and takes this Rural Gothic song into an orchestral uplift, which completely changes the tone towards optimism in the last measures. Masterful, kind of his signature.
Such a criminally underrated musician.
True!
Didn’t realize there was a video released to accompany this masterpiece.
Too young to remember MTV?
@@mariekatherine5238 I've been watching MTV inside-out back in the day and I've not once seen this one either.
"Blackbirds, backwards, forwards and fall" is one of Stipe's very best verses.
53 and hear this and it’s like I’m catapulted wonderfully back to the days when everything was an opportunity, everyone was a friend to meet and politics were something you disagreed about for a time but then shared a beer afterwards and laughed at your own excesses of fervour….wow…I long for those times again. Be kind folks. Just be kind xx
Thumbs from a 52 guy. I guess most people just don't get it these days.
stunning
"My mind is racing -- as it always will"
This song is my fav from REM and that line my favorite from the song. A friend of mine said REM's tone felt like "staying home alone on a Saturday night" and I'm inclined to agree but a bit of sad is needed for perspective.
Thanks, early 90s REM, for that. We'll ignore Monster and love OOT and A4TP!
Oh come on man, Monster was...pretty monster, in fact undoubtedly.
It makes my heart ache it’s such a beautiful song
@REM Your songs will be remembered when the other music has passed on. They have such emotional meaning that surpasses what music labels considers music now.
This music- the instruments, vocals, rhythm, melody, harmony, crescendo...this song is PERFECT ❤🎉. Thank you REM. Wish I'd have seen you in concert 😢
Beautiful song by REM
Much missed
Such a classic and awesome body of work
The emotion in your voice alongside the beautiful music. Haunting bliss. Forever my favourite band.
Oh dear, that violin at 2:43 : is it not simply magic, a misterious sweetness?
Wow never stopped to listen to that in isolation...magic
The strings + mandolin + harpsichord together are complete perfection. I don’t think anyone but REM could have pulled that combination off in a song like this.
song is about compassion for self and others
The storm it came up strong, it shook the trees and blew away our fear xxx
Used that line in a school assembly I lead.
Beautiful comment girl! You get it!!!
Que hermoso final del 🐻 Oso t2 !! Ojalá pronto esté la 3
REM's music always takes me back to my middle school days
miss you so much and it doesn't pass.
parece todo convulso en la tierra . Pero por tu voz Michael y la música me llena de alegría. Gracias R.E.M
Still listening I am 62. Can relate to this My mind is racing as it always will....am bipolar or as I prefer to call it manic depressive diagnosed myself age 20 !! ❤🎉❤❤❤❤
I can empathize.
If you had to pick, in your opinion the 5 greatest bands..Rem would have to be one of them.
One of their best and definitely most underrated songs. Simply beautiful ❤
One of my favorite REM songs. Classic.
Revisiting this song because of the Bear Season 2 finale. It gives it another perspective.
Also, I had this collection of OUT OF TIME videos on VHS
This track has always reminded me of "Swan Swan H", from the "Life's Rich Pageant" album.
Peter admitted that when the band were creating new songs they would sometimes work favourites from previous albums into new songs. I hear similarities between Wendell Gee and Find the River, Finest Worksong and Turn You Inside Out and Country Feedback and Ebow The Letter.
The violins at the end are just touching my soul
Excelente melodía, REM una banda que se supera musicalmente cada vez, con cada trabajo que presenta y éste es magnífico.
remembering this album as if it were Yesterday!!! I'm truly lucky to be able to listen, understand such Talent!!! REM is honestly one of the best!!! of my Era!! Heartfelt Lyrics, that bring joy and pain together!!!! Music that was love and spirit of a World less Complicated. Damn I miss these Guys!! the collaboration with B52s Kate Piearson vocals was Magic!!! Ugh. I'm Old….lol
at 52 still loving this stuff. can listen all day
+David Young even older and the same to me
i'm 26 and love this
19DanielS90 I'm 52 and still loving this too - awesome, beautiful and totally R.E.M.
David Young this 35 year old loves this so much too.
Constance Lettering nice. most your age have NO taste
This song has it all. The perfect REM song.
👍
I know what you mean, it's not my favourite song of theirs but it manages to push a lot of buttons at once.
Thom Yorke and Michael Stipe have both suffered from anxiety disorders, so I find it interesting that The Bear has featured their music so prominently, when so much of it revolves around anxiety. Radiohead in the first season and REM in the second.
One of the greatest bands of all time
Please come back!!!
Heard this song for the very first time on an episode of "scrubs" today and I had to look it up.. glad I did!!
I'm 70 and always appreciated great music. This band was the very best
REM,,,,,=POETRY
63, and I discovered them when I bought Document, loved it, and backtracked through their older albums, buying them all. R.E.M. music meant so much to me at that time. For years Document was my #1 until Automatic for the People supplanted it. Out of Time is way up there too.
I forgot how much I miss this phenomenal band: saw them in concert around 5 or 6 times---they were as good live as on record/CD.
Season 2 finale of The Bear.. “absolutely incredible!”
such a great song. just perfect
My favourite rem track.
Could anything be more beautiful?
This song brings a tear to my eye.
My god the bear season 2 final a roller coaster of emotions
I forgot just how much I miss REM as I listen to/watch these videos----what an incredible band! Fell in love with them from the first time I heard Radio Free Europe wafting out of a radio at a used book store near Ohio State campus way back in 1981 or 1982.
Bear season 2 was so good.. Every episode after Fishes had me sweating
I think Jamie Lee Curtis deserves an Emmy for that one.
Its a beautiful masterpiece!
One of the only memories i have with my dad was playing with toy cars while he listening to this masterpiece, my father never was the same after the loss of his mother, struggled with cocaine and alcohol addiction for a long time. My god, just miss the days that he as actually himself.
REM's vudeis have always a poetic picture quality
They depict the US in a beautiful way.
I always loves their vidéos/ photos as much as their music.
Agreed. It’s like Americana or American folk art
just coming from the end of Season 2 of The Bear -- what a perfect song/perfect match
I haven't searched so furiously for a song for a long time...Bravo The Bear
My favorite depressive music
Роман Терентьев That, Chester Bennington's Pushing me Away piano version and Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah!
Taisa - Followed by Elliott Smith's "Waltz #2" & Sinead O'Connor's "Sacrifice" or her version of "The Foggy Dew." And finally Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt."
you can be sad and happy. throw your love around.

Beyond beautiful...to all the shoe gazers of the world....how i feel EVERYDAY! ❤ BLESSINGS 💞🙏
This lonely world is wasted.
all time favorite band ...you changed my world 💜
Definitely one of mine to,i used to listen to rem as a young teenager and most people would say why you like that music ? I'm 42 now and I relate to it even more
The soundtrack to my 20's and 30's. Beautiful, gritty video too. Love it.
