    Dutch artist Piet Mondrian’s abstract, rectangular paintings inspired mathematicians to create a two-fold challenge. Can you solve the puzzle and get to the lowest score possible? Gordon Hamilton shows how.

      I guess this will be faster and easier to solve with a computer.
      Maby you let the computer calculate all possible combinations of squares to get 6400 and then try to arrange them on the 80×80 grid yourself (because this step could be difficult to code).

    What I did:
    I wrote out the possible areas and ordered them. Then I tried to make 64 using various combinations. Through desperation and figuring out the "odd rule" mentioned in the video's solution, I came across the 8-8-10-12-12-14 combo. It fit in fine, but I still felt like there was a better solution. I tried for quite a while after that, but I didn't even find the second solution in the video. In the end, I felt I had failed, and even when the answer came up in the video, I feel more like I lucked out than figured out.

    "Cover a square with non-identical rectangles"
    Uh... How about the entire square? Squares are rectangles, so that is one too. It's unique since there can't be two of the same if there's only one. Its sides are whole numbers. It covers the entire area. The score is 0, you can't go lower than that since MAX >= MIN, so MAX - MIN >= 0. It doesn't even matter what size we're supposed to cover (assuming it's whole by whole, which it has to be or you'd never cover the entire thing no matter what), we're done here.

      @abdulmasaiev9024 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StefV153 That is the intention for this problem, yes. But the usual convention in math says that any number is good (including 1, or even 0 though that's not applicable here), unless specified otherwise. The point is they technically should have specified it's 2 or more, and no, using a plural of "rectangles" here is not good enough.

    • @StefV153
      @StefV153 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@abdulmasaiev9024 well thats the problem with videos like these: the problems arent written in mathematical language but in English, which automatically makes it dependent on it. In English, a plural in this situation always means more than or equal to 2. In this type of problems, English conventions > math conventions

    • @abdulmasaiev9024
      @abdulmasaiev9024 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StefV153 Almost all problems are written in some spoken language, so that would mean that math conventions almost never trump in math. This is an absurd idea. Domain specific conventions always trump more general conventions when they're in conflict within that domain. This is a math problem so the math convention trumps, and not at least acknowledging the math convention is sloppy at best.

    10,10 becomes 10,2 and 10,8. Which further becomes 10,2 3,8 and 7,8. 7,8 becomes 7,3 and 7,5. 7,5 becomes 3,5 and 4,5.

    1. You must cover a square canvas with non overlapping rectangles
    2. A(largest) - A(smallest) = score
    The lowest score you can get for a square is 0 by simply not dividing. For an 8x8 (largest = 64) (smallest = 64) so 64-64 = 0
    3x3 squares are aloud and as such a square with full dimensions should also be allowed. It fits the rule stated by covering the entire canvas and never overlaps.

      I agree that it's not a riddle. Riddles involve solving a particular problem or conundrum with a particular solution or explanation. This is more of a game than a riddle. Plus the video completely fails to give the best answer, which is to always use a single square, giving a score of 0 every time.

    I have the lowest score ever at every size!
    Heres one of them:
    Lets take a 5 by 5 grid.
    Now put a 5 by 5 square in there.
    Now all the surface area is filled.
    The biggest area is the 5x5 square.
    The smallest area is the 5x5 square.
    This gives us the sum (5x5)-(5x5) = 0
    So I got zere which is I think the best you can do!
    (For the people who dont get it, this is a joke)

    • @Christian-wk7ox
      @Christian-wk7ox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My answer is 2 if 3x3 rectangle is allowed, and if it's not allowed since it's technically a square, then my lowest answer is 6, too.

    • @enderyu
      @enderyu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Christian What
      a square is a rectangle and is allowed 0:28 .
      And an answer with score 2 is impossible using an area 9 rectangle, since that would mean that the biggest and lowest area used were between 7-10, since there are no rectangles of size 11 that fit in the 8x8 space.
      there is 1 possible rectangle for sizes 7,9[the 3x3 one], and 10, and 2 of area 8 [2x4 and 1x8].
      7+8+8+9= maximum of 32 of total area, only half the space you needed to fill.
      8+8+9+10= maximum of 35.
      If I have made any mistake, then please tell me what is wrong with my argument. And sorry for bad english

    • @bigchungus920

      CubeChickN you get the smallest rectangle and subtract it from the largest. So if you do 8×8 you will get 64 which is the biggest and subtract 0 from 64 equals 64 in math it's 64-0=64

    At 2:40, the list of possible rectangles is faulty. You are missing the 3x7 and 4x7 ones (and the 8x8 one to be complete though you probably left it out on purpose) but you got the 6x8 one twice. Noticed it as there should be 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8=8x9/2=36 possible rectangles in total.
