Wolfenstein felt more suited to this list and certainly more played too.

Right as I dropped the gnome to go help her, she jumps in and the level ends. Needless to say, I helplessly watched from the camera as the gnome fell out of the chopper and I missed the achievement. Sometimes, I really hate the AI companions.
I like to go through my life like an RPG. I gain experience points for every task I do: go to work, do the laundry, that sort of thing. I even make a "bing" noise when I level up. Get some weird looks on the bus for that.

Timesplitters 2 in Homefront: the Revolution. Also, Astro Chicken is actually important to the story in Space Quest 3, because it contains a distress message from the two guys you rescue in the end. And the real danger of Mrs. Astro Chicken in SQ4 is if you play it after the Sequel Police arrive in the arcade; which results in them cornering Roger and killing him.
I love the inclusion of games that give you that nostalgic feeling. It just like the developers almost paying respect to the developers of the past. Also it can also hold an extra achievement for the player as well.

HERO 3D, inside the (free) game "Iji". You find it when you know the world is facing total destruction unless you hurry up and confront the one who would be giving that final command. Luckily that time pressure is only storyline wise, and not gameplay wise :D

What about Xenogears? After you spend some time in a prison colony you have to battle in your gear in an arena-like setting...it’s a completely separate form of combat in the game that basically acts like an arcade style gundam type fighter game. After you complete that area of the game you can go back and play as much as you like. It’s super addictive.
The planet lander game in The Dig. It is a point of click adventure game about some astronauts stranded on an alien planet. In the prologue, you have to connect bombs on an asteroid before it hits earth, but you can play planet lander on your pocket computer. While you are in a spacesuit next to the asteroid with a lot of bombs you are supposed to attached to it.
Oh man, this reminded me about FF X and the Blitzball "minigame" What is that? A huge monster, anihilator of cities, is murdering everything in its path, and I am the only one who can possibly stop it? Sorry, I am too busy creating the perfect WaterBall team and crushing the scoring records to care. And the worst part is... I didn't even care about the rewards, I just wanted to be the very best Blitzballer of all times, so the few people who managed to stay alive would remember me forever. Tough times to be an NPC.
Final Fantasy VIII's Triple Trial Card game got me really hooked some years ago. I even considered having them printed and teaching some friends to play it.
Donkey Kong in Donkey Kong 64 kept me occupied for hours, and that game you were required to play took me months to finish. Then there was Snake's Nightmare in MGS3.. I played through that so many times I'm surprised Snake didn't die of a heart attack.

Xenosaga Episode 1: Der Wille Zur Macht had a pretty decent CCG, as well as a surprisingly competent Virtual On clone. They were only at risk of thwarting the actual plot because of how confrontationally dull it was, though.
The final fantasy games had enough game within a game minigames to triple the playtime. In several games, there was the card system. In ten, there was blitzball. In a few, there were chocobo races, or ALL OFF THE CALM LANDS in ten.

After you spend some time in a prison colony you have to battle in your gear in an arena-like setting...it’s a completely separate form of combat in the game that basically acts like an arcade style gundam type fighter game. After you complete that area of the game you can go back and play as much as you like. It’s super addictive.

The planet lander game in The Dig.
It is a point of click adventure game about some astronauts stranded on an alien planet. In the prologue, you have to connect bombs on an asteroid before it hits earth, but you can play planet lander on your pocket computer. While you are in a spacesuit next to the asteroid with a lot of bombs you are supposed to attached to it.

Final Fantasy VIII's Triple Trial Card game got me really hooked some years ago. I even considered having them printed and teaching some friends to play it.

For someone rushing to locate and rescue his daughter, Geralt of Rivia seems to have plenty of vacation time to travel the *Witcher 3* world around to play and collect unique Gwent cards.
My personal favorite is "My blasters run hot: the game" from Rachet&Clank: Crack in time. Which is playable at the gladiator arena ship thing.

Like after one mission, you have access to the Hyperion's built in Cantina where the arcade machine is there behind Graven Hill, the mercenary contractor guy that lets you hire upgraded versions of some of your units as "Mercenary Units"

That Shenmue segment hit me with nostalgia! When I first got out of high school I had a job and an apartment of my own, and was having a grand old time buying up all the video games and consoles with my phat checks that I could! And then I remembered rent. And then I had to sell almost everything I had bought in order to pay it. And then I was sad.

Space Quest 1-3 are amazingly fun classic adventure games. I fondly remember each of them from my childhood. Good times.
The final fantasy games had enough game within a game minigames to triple the playtime. In several games, there was the card system. In ten, there was blitzball. In a few, there were chocobo races, or ALL OFF THE CALM LANDS in ten.
