    Octopath was actually the game that fully got me back into gaming, along with botw kinda. Absolutely LOVED the game, all the individual stories were such a divergence from the usual that i found it very fun as well. In a sequel i would like to see actual character interactions though, even if that means the scenario writer has to work overtime to make it work out

    The style and visuals of Octopath are crazy good. The battles start to get tedious pretty quick. I didn't think I cared that much about story until Octopath showed me how important it is to have SOMETHING cohesive in an RPG. I feel like it could've been so much better.
    BD2 looks very interesting and thanks for the comparison, even if I was sure your eyes were going to explode off your head at any moment.

    This was a really good comparison vid! One look at my channel and it's obvious which I enjoy more haha, but I really appreciated this very level-headed and straight forward approach to comparing the games. If I were doing the Combat, I would've picked Bravely just because I happen to enjoy its system more than Octopath's, but I completely recognize and acknowledge all the pros and cons you brought up, so the coin flip felt pretty on point to how I felt. Otherwise, great editing and presentation, just a sweet video all around. Keep it up :)

    I'd give the combat point to BD2. Cuz of the 24 jobs, being able to act 4 times in one turn, using spells or physical attacks or both on one or various enemies makes it so fun.
    While in both games you can have broken strategies.
    They're far more abundant in BD2, and with the use of special moves which will buff up the party, or perhaps using a broken move and mimicking it with the Freelancer. There's so much depth into it.
    In Octopath Traveler, there are half the jobs in BD2, not a bad thing but you don't have ten million options as you do in BD2.
    So my vote goes for BD2 on the combat side

    I’d give it to Octopath because I liked the combat better and the music better which is where I spend most of my time in JRPGs. Bravely Default 2 also had good combat and music, better story overall, and I was more attached to the characters, so really either game is good it just depends what people want to focus on. 👍

    If Octopath could resolve the rough edges like random encounters, bad dungeons and lack of character interaction it would be by far superior IMO. As it stands I still think it's slightly better overall personally. I prefer Octopath's combat system, story telling and job system. I personally don't think variety is a plus for Bravely Default 2 because it only takes away from the characters. I like the fact that Octopath gives a reason to use different characters with them having a predefined base class. I also think Octopath adds a lot of world depth with various NPC interactions you can pull off.

    • @Rapthan76
      @Rapthan76 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, I think having one unique role for each character forces you to think twice when you build you're party : "should I put a warrior or a thief?" or "should I give this secondary class to this character to give him more tool for it's role or this one to allow him to do something else?". Basically you're always thinking your build to make you sure you can touch all the weaknesses while it's not that important in Bravely default two. You're more likely to have one tank, one support, one mage, one dps and you while you can try to think about how you can maximize your damage, you can also just play whatever you like and it's going to work because unlike octopath, nothing forces you to use every weapon or element.

      I never enjoyed static jobs. I just like that you can pick and choose different roles for any character. I like the freedom of being able to stack your party with multiple mages, vanguards, etc. That's pretty much what classic FF (1, 3 and 5) is about and what this game was going for. Your characters are pretty much just blank slates, and it's up to the player to define their roles. Which I'm fine with. It's like D&D. You essentially create a story and the characters are your canvas.
      Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

    I think octopaths jobs all made a lot more sense. You didnt have any job aside from the scholar that had abilities that were ‘this skill but better’, and every job had multiple different uses. Although personally i think bravely default 2 had more interesting jobs like the gambler, the entire gambler class was basically 1 ability in octopath, same with things like salve maker. Having played bd 2 right after beating octopath, i think i enjoyed octopath more, but i still dont know, considering i only just beat bd 2. The 2 games have tons of parallels, more than i expected, so id say anyone who liked one should play the other.

    • @AltairEgo1
      @AltairEgo1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The jobs were fine, I just didn't find the mechanics all that engaging and still think that the brave and default system is a more enduring and engaging gimmick.
      I got bored of Octopath 50 hours in. The mechanics just couldn't hold my attention enough for me to want to finish it. It didn't help that even trash mobs were damage sponges, making battles longer than they really need to be.
      BD2 was more of the same, but more of what made the series good, so that was enough for me to want to play it for 160 hours. The job system alone kept my interest.

    Don't like the cutesy art style of Bravely Default II, too bad because it's hard to find good turn based RPGs anymore. Playing Octopath now, and I agree with you on most points. Really wish they would've made the sprites more detailed and better animated. I love the lighting and other effects and the environments look pretty good but the sprites are just lazy, for a $60 game they should have done better it's not like they were held back by hardware.

      Actually and the fact that u can put just 4 passive skills

    • @granallemo
      @granallemo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      However in Bravely Default II you need to lvl up the the jobs, sometimes the same jobs in multiple characters, and there are a lot of jobs... So it got me tired. While in Octopath Traveler it's much more natural and effortless.
      Plus I didn't need to grind in OT, just before the final boss and it eas pretty quick. The secret is just to not run from all of the random encounters. The required lvls will come

    • @AltairEgo1
      @AltairEgo1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@granallemoI never found Octopath's grinding natural. Or, if it is, then the trash mobs are just naturally supposed to be damage sponges with fights lasting a longtime. If you say I was underleveled, then you've effectively recreated those conditions in Bravely Defaulf. Just in a different form.
      At least in this I can customize jobs and pop a few JP orbs when I need a certain one leveled up.
      Yeah you shouldn't encourage players to run from a lot of battles to create a challenge, but conversely you shouldn't bog them down with 30 or 40 fights before a boss in a dungeon. That formula gets stale fast.
      Job customization is a way around this annoying tradition of JRPGs. You have other means to win a fight besides just grinding out trash mobs.
      Combine that with being able to fast forward in fights, JP up and Up, and you can pretty much do whatever you want in this game.
      I think you may be exaggerating the need to play around with jobs though. To get through the main story doesn't require THAT much effort, even on hard.
      The ex-bosses are another story entirely. Like Leannen Sith. Those are deliberately grindy bosses that require a lot of time and forethought to beat.

    Bravely Default for 3ds is my absolute favourite game of all time so I may a bit biased in saying that if I have to choose, BD2 wins this contest for me, but don’t get me wrong I absolutely adore Octopath as well. Each game has features I like and/or don’t like. For instance, I hate grinding in Octopath, but absolutely love it in BD2 (yeah I’m weird 😜), but what Octopath lacks in that respect, it more than makes up for in its HD-2D art style. It’s the same sort of thing for BD2. At first, I wasn’t really fond of the clay-style chibi models (I’m in love with them now lol) but my gosh that soundtrack made up for what I didn’t like at first.
    Pretty much what I’m saying is that each game has its own charm that makes it great. 😊

  • @AltairEgo1
    @AltairEgo1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    To your comment about the turn order, I agree that the game didn't do a particularly good job explaining this mechanic, but it is otherwise sound.
    It actually adds a layer of depth to braving and defaulting. When you notice a certain party member is far from getting their turn, you might be more hesitant to brave. Conversely when you notice their turn is up next, maybe you'll brave the other to negative with buffs or heals, as you see your other party member is abour to act and ready to act. Or maybe you'll revive the incapacitated one with the full action gauge, or buff them, and so on and so forth.
    Turn order is certainly different than BD1, less simple for sure, but you soon become acquainted with how it functions. The battles can get tough enough to force you to learn them enough to get by.
    I can understand reservations about it, especially fans of the first game with its "all party members act at once" system. But trust me, this change adds more depth to not only how you attack, heal and buff, but braving and defaulting. You can no longer just mindlessly default your entire time all at once. You have to seriously think about how defaulting will factor into the next action of the boss. If you know their pattern and they usually attack immediately with something huge, you might consider buffs instead of choosing to default one character or rhe other.
    I will agree with you on the exclamation mark, it doesn't help. I don't see why enemies don't have a meter, but maybe it's to keep you from knowing exactly when and what they'll do next. Who knows. The decision on the devs part is still a bit baffling though.

  • @dave9515
    @dave9515 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Octopath is better imo. Octopath provides a decent challenge and even with some balnce issues its more free and open like there are multiple ways to approach how you beat and go through the game including which traveler story you choose and because the others that join are in random towns it feels like every traveler is having their own solo adventure with the others that join you tagging along. Also octopath is like practically an open world game so you can do stuff like taking on divine shrines as early as level 15 and other challenges like solo story runs where you beat a character's 4 chapters and never recruit the other party members thanks to its open world structure. Even on hard mode BD2 is so much easier than octopath traveler in fact hard mode feels even easier than standard mode since enemies go into debt faster. Also octopath break system is one of the most satisfying systems ever. Super excited for octopath 2. Also Octopath music is some of the best gaming music you could ever find especially the true final boss theme. Even with all the freedom and options in BD2 when everything feels mad easy even on the hardest mode it makes it feel pointless to even progress at times. Octopath story also much more vastly interesting imo because of the branching paths that all connect at the end and the lore they dump on you plus Kit is such an interesting and cool character that i hope shows up at least once in the sequel as a cameo and reference to octopath 1 at least.

    I actually spent way more time doing random encounters on BD2 than in OT. This because, if you skip battles, you are never going to be nearly as strong as you need to be to battle the bosses, which are usually quite tough in BD2. The battles in OT, on the other hand, are usually a tad too easy but the encounters are not that many, if you avoid running of course. All in all I found dungeons in BD2 to be a tad too long and repetitive.

      But you can have the option to just run down the dungeon too in BD2, enemy flee if you are OP or charge you and you can easly dodge them. What? I run from enemies all the time. I've never found myself to be underleveled unless it was for an ex-boss like Leannen Sith. If I died, it was because my strategy sucked.
      If you learn this game's sysyem intimately, you can manage any dungeon boss reasonably enough without having to grind them out. Yes, even on hard mode.

      @@giuseppec7452I even died a couple of times against Bard until I quickly realized how easy his compatriots go down.
      Sometimes you just lose because your strategy didn't cut the mustard. Braved too much, defaulted too little, yeah, there's that. But managing speed of your party, the order in which they can act, the enemy's weakness to your weapon, how your equipment affects magic attacks and restorative powers.
      I think if more people just actually LOOKED at their party and examine the kinks, they can win. And hell, if you can't get enough damage in, there's always items like zeus's wrath to supplement other attacks.

    I honestly have issues with Octopath travellers presentation. I think the world and styles fine, but there’s no excuse for a big company charging AAA prices not to have fully expressive sprites and detailed battle animations. Yes, it’s nostalgia pandering but it’s not the 1990s now (even back then DK and Sonic had very expressive sprites) there’s no excuse for a game this expensive to have not gone the extra mile with its animations

      I would argue BD2 had more replayability just with the jobs alone. You've got over 24 to use and can take your characters into any number of different directions.
      Certainly Octopath has got story variety going for it. 8 different characters with their own unique story. But game mechanics wise I think BD2 lends more to replayability with its gerth of jobs and abilities. No two playthroughs need to be the same with the sheer amount of options you're given and ways to approach bosses.

    No character interactions except bad banter. Random encounter simulator in Octo really killed the game for me. The dungeon and level design like you said were ABYSMAL. It also started out 100% voice acted then it just went poof. Why? I havent even touched BD2 but just watching this video already tells me im going to like it so much more

    BD2 hands down I'd say...
    + Much better story
    +Twice as much jobs as Octo
    + Has a card game for you to get invested in
    + Better pacing unlike Octo, in which Octo feels too formulaic and repetitive
    + Actually has an Overworld
    + Boss fights have better challenge, although if you know what to do in this game, they can also be very easy to break
    + Not as grindy
    Yeah the only thing Octo does better than BD2 is music. Although even then, it's pretty close. Octo has better dungeon/town music while BD2 has better battle music, especially the 2nd boss theme which is called, "Battle against the wicked ones." There is also sprites vs the cutesy art style of BD2, which is subjective based on the person.

    I don't really think Octopath is a call back to a visual style that was present in Final Fantasy at all. To me it is clearly an evolution of the PS1 pixel sprites over 3D backgrounds that games like Star Ocean 2, Grandia, Xenogears and most notably SaGa Frontier had. FF never dabbled in this aestetic.

    What i can definitely say these games do better than FF is those games do FF better than FF does. FF16 is a great game but is literally an action game. It almost completely abandons evreything that made FF into the series it is. FF7R did do a nice blend of action and classic FF style. That was ok with me. But FF16 was too far. Id be more excited for another BD or OT game than another "FF" game in the style of FF16. Especially if it sticks to an action game that has more in common with DMC than FF.

    Nice comparison, for me Octopath was a huge disappointment, the art style is the only good thing, usually i dont care much about the story on JRPGs, most are generic power of friendship, but Octopath is simply horrible disjointed mess, and the combat is unable to carry the game, it becomes reptitive and some bosses drag for WAY too long.
    I'm playing BD2 now and i find the combat much better, i'm playing on hard and bosses are much more strategic instead of sponges like Octopath.

    The reason I and so many others really don't think Bravely Default II looks good visually is because of the mesh between these cutesy chibi simplified character models having realistic textures slapped on them doesn't really look pleasing to look at.
    They tried to emulate the 3DS Bravely games visual style that perfectly honored Akihiko Yoshida's beautiful art style but it feels like they didn't know what they were doing/ didn't care.
    The whole game looks really mediocre, I wish they had taken the time to properly adapt the art style to more powerful hardware instead of just slapping "realism" on a art style that prided itself on its simplistic yet charming look

    • @vPUNKsTERNE
      @vPUNKsTERNE 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Besides the visual style, as a huge Bravely fan, I can't help but feel disappointed by BDII, it just lacks so much of the charm that helped the 2 previous games stand out, the characters aren't really interesting (Seth doesn't even have any backstory or development) and the story just doesn't really go anywhere interesting besides having a lot of elements that could make up for a pretty good twist with the usual Bravely 4th wall breaks.
      Gameplay is as fun as ever though, but I do find it tedious that most everything in later half of the game can counter your attacks, which can become frustrating.
      The OST in the game is incredible though, major props to REVO for a fantastic score that even manages to surpass the first game's OST, im suprised you didn't touch on the soundtrack, given that both games have a strong musical identity.
      Either way this was a really fun video! Really nicely edited and just a cozy watch overall! Definetly subscribing!

      I mean even the number of tracks between the two games is a huge discrepancy. OPT has 80+ and BD2 is like 60-70, opt tracks being of a higher quality (or at least more complex) all of bd2 4 main overworld themes are re renditions of the same motifs (nothing wrong with that but comparing that to OTP which had 8 biomes with their own themes.) Tbh I was being generous to bd2 its more like an 8/10 vs a 20/10. Still agree with your other game points but I highly advise a side by side comparison to the tracks.

    I played both games, Octopath is the best RPG of recent times. Exploration is key in this game to get overpower which is far better than the other trash Bravely default game.
    Bravely default is one of the worst RPG i've played in my life, mostly because the jobs are completely unbalanced making the vast majority of jobs completely useless aside from leveling them to boost your freelancer job. And the game incentivize you to level up your job on the beach in the very first area of the game by cornering enemies in order to get chain bonus and level any job super fast, then you equip the Freelancer and completely destroy anything on your path, then go get a new job then repeat the process. It's so fucking boring... The game would have been a thousand times better without the chain bonus system so it's worth fighting against enemies on the same level you are. The JP growth is completely broken as it's never worth fighting against stronger enemies which is something I really hate from this game.
    Also the argument of not being able to avoid random encounter in Octopath is just silly, if you want to go back somewhere, you just teleport to the nearest town and nothing is very far away...

    • @AltairEgo1
      @AltairEgo1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Teleportation items have been in RPGs for decades, not exactly a solution for random encounters. They are cancer, let's not beat around the bush. It's why Bravely Default got rid of it, it's why the Pixel Remasters let you turn it off entirely. Why Octopath didn't follow suit is baffling. But I guess I'm not surprised because this game wears old games' corpses like some sort of grotesque suit. Play Triangle Strategy instead. A wholly superior game that actually respects the legacy of its forefathers.
