      I hadn't considered a flail mower & really hadn't paid much attention to them in my tractor research but now I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a flail (preferably w/hydraulic offset) instead of a mid mount. They're also supposed to be good @ mulching. I'm not overly particular about my own lawn although the flail seems to do a pretty good job plus can cut heavier brush, etc.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The one I bought offers hydraulic offset, seems like a nice feature to add. As far as mulching and thicker mowing goes, watch this video of me mowing. It impresses me all the time th-cam.com/video/5B_TMCe7Sh8/w-d-xo.html

    • @danielsharon524
      @danielsharon524 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TKCL Thanks! Hydraulic offset seems like the way to go for what I expect to be doing. I'd never considered a flail until someone suggested it on a forum. I'm actually going to the dealer tomorrow to test drive tractors (1st time owner & also going start a business w/it) so that's step 1 & I need to make sure I can equip what I want with the rear SCV's I want (some confusion on the manufacturer's website). I mulch my own leaves in the fall & even if this was just used a first pass & I had to finish the job w/my push mower (I don't have a huge amount of lawn) it'd be great. I'm also thinking I'll be able to reach a lot more area on my own property w/a flail vs. a mid mount and that it would open up what I can offer to customers esp. since I do not intend to just mow grass for hire - Plenty of ppl already do that.

    The best video out there explaining the differences. I went from a 6 brush hog to a flail mower with similar cutting width. I did this mostly to avoid the windrows in my hay field that the rotary mower left. Now I can cut all the junk in the spring without leaving a bunch of thatch. This saves me from having to bale and try to get of that 1st cut.

    • @TKCL

      I've yet to run a heavy duty flail, but I've seen them in action and they are impressive. I did the majority of clearing on our property with a rotary mower when I first bought it. Rotary mowers are definitely good for heavy clearing, not much else in my opinion.

    I have a ATH 600 Brush Hog finish mower 60 inch cut I ran and It cut
    beautifully. They're mainly for large properties where you can mow

    @Boophoenix 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a ditch and bank flail I have just started to use. It does an good job it seems from each cut. I cut next to an area also cut by commercial mowers. After a few days I actually think my cuts look better than theirs. One thing I noticed in your video you stated that I kind of experienced with mine. I had the skids to low and mine would occasionally dig in. I raised them and used the top link to rotate mine back onto the roller. So far so good. This in combination with adjusting the rock arms allows me to adjust my height as well. Although our two cutters differ as mine has a slot in the top link to allow for some drift in terrain I don’t think I see in yours. I do cut a much larger flat area than bank. I also am running with a 4066R.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine also has the top link float option, but I prefer solid mount so I can keep it back on the roller. Putting more weight to the rear definitely helps with dragging debris under the front skids and digging trenches. So far I love it, just wish it was about a foot wider for quicker mowing. Thanks for stopping by the channel!

    • @Boophoenix
      @Boophoenix 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TKCL I can relate to wanting a larger one. I’d like to have a regular pull behind or side shift flail, but to get wide enough to be handy would be a little difficult to trailer. It would also be difficult to justify the cost of the Woods BW12 ( 12’ batwing ) not long ago.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm using scoops or duck foot blades, not hammers. Hammers are for heavy duty cutting. When I tried the scoops the cut quality was better. However it definitely put more of load on the tractor and stirred up more dust. The Y blades that come with the mower are a good compromise and what I prefer.

    Hello, I am looking for some sort of machine to remove all vegetation. I have a shooting range about 100 yards square and I want to keep it bare dirt. Right now I mow it with a tow behind finish mower behind an ATV, but it still leaves some weeds and grass. I also have a drag that I tow behind it, but I have to make 4-5 passes with it and still only about 80% of the weeds and grass is gone. I was thinking about a flail mower, tow behind tiller, or harrow but I'm not sure if that's the correct machine either. Do you have any suggestions? I don't want to use mulch or gravel, I would like it to be bare dirt. Thanks for your time.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If bare dirt is what you want and you don't have a tractor, an atv sprayer with glysophate is the best option for total vegetation control. If using herbicides is not something you want to use, a set of discs and constantly turning over the ground is another way for vegetation control. However atv discs are slow and not nearly as effective as a tractor disc on such a large area. The tiller is another option as you mentioned and will be slow but probably more effective.

    How do you like that tractor during the rainy season here in Florida, I had an older tractor when we first bought our property, but I sold it and bought a used auction skid steer, because I felt it had more benefits and functions to us.. especially since I was planning to use it for digging, leveling, and creating trail out to the property, I got stuck way to often in the soft sand and the muck form the the rainy season with my tractor I had, since getting the skid steer its yet to leave me stranded, been close.. but has to date always got me out of hairy situations. I purchased a flail mower and bush hog attachment, but I rarely use the bush hog attachment due to how versatile the flail setup has been for me. How fast are you mowing? Looks pretty quick. I have a 6' Woods beater on my Deere at work and depending on how smooth the ground is I can usually only mow my spots (mostly Open Space and Retention Basins) in 3rd gear in B range (3.6 mph) or sometimes 4th gear (4.7 mph) It kinda makes a mess of things the first mowing of the season, but it starts looking better after each subsequent cut. I realize beaters are never going to look as good as a finish or flail mower. I just don't think my mower goes as fast as yours does. I use the E setting for RPM, which I think is about 1500 rpm motor and 540 rpm for the PTO.

My only flail complaint is - it rolls past a fair bit of tall, thin grass?! I removed those little swinging gates at the front to allow for a cleaner entry, but without much change. My 40hp J-D is geared and 1st/Hi is slow as molasses but 2/Hi seems too fast. I bumped up to @2200 rpm... but I am not sure of the right combo? What engine rpm were you running in this video? I just brought the Y-knives to the shop to give them a fine edge. (remove/replace is a chore-Luckily, I do not have much debris so they were not bad at all). Again, nice of you to do this video. Jim

Rather than buy a narrow tractor, I was thinking about purchasing a pull behind flail mower that has an 18hp gas engine (Puluzzo). I have up to 1.5" limbs to chop up. • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pull behind flail? Doesn't mount to a 3pt? 18 hp is low, it would depend on the size of the flail. True 1.5 inch material is going to give that a workout, but it really depends on the size flail/drum rotor you are trying to turn. My gut says you are a little underpowered.

      I see now, completely different. I think 1.5 inch material might be a bit much for it. That's the max I would consider for my tractor flail. Those duck foot blades that they call hammers, are not true Hammers and are meant more for grass. I've ran a set of those on my flail before.

I've been wanting to mow the grass, and there are too many rocks to move. I'm considering purchase of a flail mower for my Deere 4310, but only if I could adjust the mower upward/downward on the fly as needed while I drive, so I don't hit rocks. Can you give me your opinion, or offer another solution?

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Realistically you can only elevate my flail about 4 inches with the skid adjustments. I would assume lava rocks would wreak havac on each blade and bolt. Not being super easy to change or relatively cheap, I would stick with a medium duty rotary mower (2 blades VS 56). I would think with the risk of constant rock impacts I would want a medium to heavy duty gearbox. I would also spend the extra for a pto shaft with a slip clutch instead of a basic shear pin style. It will save you a tremendous amount of headache constantly replacing shear pins every time you hit a rock. I wish I had an option for you to remove the rock, but luckily we don't have much experience in Florida. Hope this helps!

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are running around 60hp like me then yes you could. Problem I seen was that most of the bigger flail mowers were heavy duty or extreme duty cutting capability. A lot had hammers instead of cutting blades and I can't see that being good for grass. As long as they have Y blades or scoops with a cutting edge I think you will be fine. My flail ran great behind my 44hp tractor and I don't even know it's behind my 66hp. I have also ran blades with a scoop design and the normal Y blades. Y blades are much easier on the tractor but don't quite cut as clean as the scoop/duck foot blades. Duck foot blades create more lift and do to the design requires more hp from what I noticed in my trial of them.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rotary mower is the bush hog type. Two big heavy duty blades, it's the most common type in my opinion. Those Y blades are a good compromise in my opinion, cut grass ok and do well in moderate brush. I have scoop or duck foot blades as well I can put on. They are excellent for grass, but chip easily for brush. Hammers are a bit heavy duty for the type of cutting I do, and seem to cut grass the worse out of the three types.

  • @johncriswell1106

    I wold like to see how it would look if you did a checkerboard (cross-cut) .. that would remove the "corn rows". Will/does the Flail mower scalp the ground? That's a big fault of rotary or finish mowers that cannot prevent scarring ground (and killing the grass) that has not been rolled perfectly flat. Why not put wheels on the flail? Finally, I have horses (no cattle) and guard donkeys... sandy soil for horses, of course. Will the flail pull the grass out of the ground exposing the roots... (effectively killing the grass/making the horseys go hungry) or will it chop off the grass but leave the roots undisturbed? Lots of questions I realize but you do not appear to have animals of any kind grazing your land. Do you have any creeks or ponds to work around? Driveways? Show us a fence-line and how close you can get to the ground on one. Lots to think about but as I am sure you have found; the implement/mower salesmen seem to not have much - ANY, real world experience with these implements... they do know how to write a sales contract...

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As for scalping, it's much better than a rotary cutter. It has an adjustable roller all the way across the back, make sure that has contact with the ground at your set cutting height. If you let your grass get extremely thick, some pulling of the roots can occur, but it's minor and my field is still thick and green. If you cut your grass more often, that's never been a problem. The flail has the ability to offset giving it a huge advantage over a rotary mower cutting close to fences, buildings ect.

    • @TKCL

      Flail is definitely the more universal mower. I can run both about the same speed. The finish mower cuts faster simply due to the fact that it's 1.5 ft wider. If you have some light brush clearing and grass cutting to cut, get the flail. If it's just grass and you are going to keep it up, get the finish mower.

      No experience with hammer blades, just duck foot and Y blades. From what I've read hammers are more for heavy cutting, doesn't mean they won't cut grass fine. Duck foot or scoop blades leave the best grass cut, and Y blades are a happy medium between rough cut and grass cutting in my experience. I have a large finish mower now, so I leave my flail as a backup grass cutter and mainly a brush/trail cutter. I've also ordered a few items from Titan and had a good experience.

      I've had a Titan flail mower for about a month. I like it much better than my 6' rotary mower as it leaves no windrows and does a great job of mulching. I've only had one issue. In mowing my trails in the woods, a piece of brush snared the rod holding the chain curtain in front and pulled it loose. It then wrapped the rod around the drum making a lot of noise! I mistakenly reached under when I had everything shut down to unwrap it burning my fingers. Nevertheless, I soon got it out. Now it flings rocks. I'll replace the curtain with a rubber flap or new chain curtain soon. I figured the hammers would be damaged, but I couldn't see any harm done.
