    Ancient Jars Hold Clues About Earth's Fluctuating Magnetic Fields
    www.nytimes.com/2017/02/14/sc...
    "Geoscientists have little knowledge of what has been occurring with the magnetic field during recent millenniums. The current decline could be just a squiggle of typical fluctuations. So they turned to pottery and the record keeping of ancient bureaucrats."
    Why Earth's Inner and Outer Cores Rotate in Opposite Directions
    www.livescience.com/39780-magn...
    "Scientists have long suspected that Earth's magnetic field - which protects life from harmful space radiation - drifts in a slightly westerly direction. That theory was established in the 1690s, when geophysicist Edmund Halley (the same Halley who spotted the eponymous comet) sailed aboard a research vessel through the South Atlantic Ocean and collected enough compass readings to identify this shift."

    www.washingtonpost.com/news/s...
    "Scientists think that about 500 million years ago, Earth's core solidified, turbocharging our magnetic field. This would have allowed the atmosphere to hold more gas, in part shielding early life from powerful solar rays - and allowing multicellular life to evolve."

    It is my understanding that during a flip, the poles break up, resulting in many poles with a much weaker total magnetic field. While the field is weak, the earth becomes vulnerable to a solar mass ejection. During this period the earth's atmosphere will become highly ionised, blocking radio communication and possibly ending our technology based society. it would be interesting to know if there is any correlation between any mass extinction events, paleo gamma luminescence and the Earth's magnetic field reversals.

      Pole Shift is a lie
      Because Earth has no magnetic poles.
      Magnetism is the only force that decays at distance cube.
      If the hypothetical magnetic pole of the earth is 0.6 Gauss, how can there be a magnetic field of 0.2 Gauss at the equator? It's impossible.
      Sunlight moves westward around the Earth, creating a weak current that causes compass needles to point north. Due to the smaller circumference, this weak current becomes stronger near the poles, producing auroras.
      Only if Earth spins the other direction, then compasses will point to south. It will not cause any danger at all.

      @@ScienceBusted the geological record traps the status of the earth's magnetic field as lava at the constructive plate boundaries cool and solidify.
      This record clearly shows the the Sarah's magnetic does periodically reverse. This has not happened in the history of the human race.
      As the earth's magnetic field is responsible for maintaining the protection of the atmosphere from cosmic rays, it seems reasonable to ask what will happen during the period where the field becomes chaotic and potentially falls to zero. Without the fields protection, a solar mass ejection directed to earth would have nothing to stop its interaction with our atmosphere.
      Add to this that solar output has increased over the years of earth's history.
      It is reasonable to argue that the coincidence of an earth directed SME, with a zero in the earth's magnetic field maybe responsible for at least one extinction level event in its history.
      The mechanisms for the generation of the earth's magnet field is well understood, it being produced by rotation of the planet's molten iron core.
      Experiments that emulate this effect have shown such a generation process is unstable and can be subject to periodic pole reversals of the field. During the periods of weakened field, prior to a reversal, the predominant north and south pole may break up into multi-poles that can appear at lower latitudes. Thinking about the churning and chaotic motion of the iron core, it is not hard to imagine how this might happen.

    For those who don't know, the magnetic north pole is in fact the south pole of the earth's magnet. That is why the north seeking end of a compass needle (which actually is the north pole of the magnetic compass needle) is attracted to the earth's magnetic north pole (which as stated is the south pole of the earth's magnet). The south magnetic pole of the earth is similarly the north pole of the earth's magnet. Dissimilar magnetic poles attract.

    if the magnetic field does flip, it should take a while to do so, like maybe a few years at most. In that time, the Auroras that occur at the ends of the magnetic field will be visible from places that don't see them, say Hawaii or Arizona. Imagine what a sight that would be, the northern lights dancing on a tropical beach or over the Grand Canyon.

    This does not mention the polar shift records on the ocean floor away from the mid oceanic ridges. The US Navy mapped this phenomenon during and after WW2, and couldn't make sense of it. However, this became key in verifying plate techtonics and continental drift.
    It is also one of the tools that geologists have at their disposal to date and place land masses throughout the geologic history of this planet.

    Does temp affect the magnetic 'setting' of the pottery? Because, even if manufacturing processes remain the same, fuel sources would change over the centuries. In a given area you might use one type of wood for a few years then switch to another. This would create a slightly different make-up of the end product. Might even cause the pottery to set before the magnetic particles have had time to orientate themselves.

      The main limiting factor of geothermal is that you need to build plants very close to a heat source. Most of the earth is not in close proximity to a heat source.

      Haha! Well, if they die, little girls will be sad that butterflies will die, but, since a species has fallen, a new one will probably rise, a new animal, maybe a giant lizard with wings that shots out fire of his mouth? Dragon? Anyone? Well, if that doesn't happen then we will have flying Butter bars through the skies, i can imagine the news saying ''Today, you can see flying Butter at 3:00PM, they are migrating to what used to be north, now south, please do not bite any.'' :D

      @DrunkenUFOPilot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wonder too. I suppose some species won't care. They'll ignore the magnetic clues in favor of coastlines, wind, sun, smells, whatever. Some species will be partially messed up, maybe lose some % of their magnetically stubborn population, but will survive overall. Almost every species of creature on our planet now, was around thousands of years ago, and must have gone through a magnetic reversal or two or three.

    okay, I still don't get it. How do rocks and clay show anything about the Earth's magnetism

    • @worldbridger9
      @worldbridger9 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know right? wtf? Rocks solidify from molten magma, they trap the iron orientation which generates a magnetic field when a lot of iron cools with that orientation, that to me is clear. Pottery is talked about as a probable recorder of magnetic field intensity, not orientation. I guess the next question is: why hasn´t the pole shifted in the last 400,000 years when it should have? or: why now?

    • @JohnWhite-pu3ys
      @JohnWhite-pu3ys 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Because rocks contain iron bearing minerals, things that react to a magnetic field. Here's a tip, use your computer for something other than TH-cam and porn. I never get why people ask something that they themselves can simply look up.

      Chandler Ehh, the most (and that's pushing it) is a power outage for a few days, and satilites needing recaibration.
      The best outcome is that birds are confused, because it takes decades to fully flip, meaning it's unlikely going to be a " everything turns off at once" deal.

    • @striker121S
      @striker121S 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Chandler are you serious? The magnetic shift doesn’t happen suddenly it’s happening already and the magnetic north is actually moving every year and we are calibrating everything according to that
      I am a pilot we use the magnetic compass a lot , the charts that we use are updated to keep us aware of the magnetic variation, so no magnetic shift will not have any catastrophic effect on us because it’s not sudden it’s very slow and constant movement

Lining up in your timeline check it

      They aren't using literal dates on the pottery, they are dating the pottery based on known stamp technology available and who the royal stamps belong to. The window it narrows it down to is huge on the scale of a human lifetime, 15-20 years, but compared to being accurate to + or - 1000-2000 years being accurate to + or - 15-20 years is pretty significant.

    Im confused, do you have the research papers on the core sampling they did in the mid-atlantic ridge? The reasons I am confused is that you spoke about the magnetic field having been weakened by 10% or so the last couple of decades (or was it centuries?). Either way, I don't see how that fits with the timescale you presented for the flip.
