  • Capt. Bob Cottle of Channel 5, Boston gives a Sunday morning drawing lesson, from 1975. You can hear the "Magic Window" theme music at the end.
Besides giving drawing lessons, in a prior incarnation Capt. Bob presented illustrated adventures starring Jasper, Gramps, and Herkimer Kiwi.
See also Capt. Bob as host of the Ruff and Reddy Show, in 1963:

Like some have posted here, I spent many Sat. mornings watching Capt. Bob. This man taught me how to draw, and develop my natural talent. Like others I miss this show and wish kids today had something similar.

Used to get up super early before my 3 siblings so I could draw with Capt. Bob! Ironically, as much as I watched him, I only remember the cat episode...

When adults across the U.S. worshipped under the brushstrokes of Bob Ross, we kids in New England rallied ‘round the crayons of Capt. Bob. If you too got up at 6am to watch this on Channel 5 then you know that theee is nothing more comforting.

Captain Bob. The person I can remember teaching me to draw. Thanks for posting this. I hadn't thought of this show in decades until tonight when my wife asked a question about that guy that used to teach drawing on TV. She meant Bob Ross but Captain Bob was what jumped into my head from out of the abyss of my childhood memories.❤️

I loved Captain Bob!!! I used to sketch along with him whenever he was on, he was a great teacher as well as a wonderful artist. I bet if he were on tv today he'd still be popular.

This is exactly how I remember how the show was coming into our house way up in Berwick, ME, with just a plain old T.V. antenna. Even though the reception wasn't very good, I used to jump out of bed early on Saturday mornings and just be in awe on how well and quickly Capt. Bob could draw. Thanks for posting this, it brought back some great childhood memories!

Channel 5's own kids shows were great in the 70's. They never talked down to kids or dumbed things down. Jabberwocky was a good one, also.

What a wonderful show that was! I loved drawing with Capt Bob when I was a kid. The only real challange was waking up in time on Saturday morning. I believe he was on at 7:00.

Yes, I remember the 1960s incarnation of "Captain Bob," with the puppet "Jasper." It aired on the original WHDH-TV, Channel 5 on the television dial, before losing its license to a consortium called Boston Broadcasters, Inc., who founded the current Channel 5., WCVB.
I think the earlier "Captain Bob" show was essentially to provide local wrap segments of. Cottle hosting nationally-syndicated cartoons. I don't recall which cartoons aired, though.

@gymnastix I also don't remember Capt. Bob's association with R+R, but reliable sources insist it was so. I do remember Jimmy Blaine hosting those cartoons, along with two parrots named Rhubarb and Jose.

I have read "Captain Bob" also hosted a nationally-syndicated cartoon series, "Ruff N Reddy." I vaguely recall having wtached "Ruff 'N Reddy," but have no memory of "Captain Bob" hosting the series, juistthe cartoons.
Cottle was a congenial children's TV show host, as well a talented artist & teacher of drawing. Too bad no video of "Captain" Bob Cottle's WHDH series seems to have survived.
