Watercolor Brush Pen Showdown! Arteza vs Colorit

  • Which watercolor brush pens is better-Arteza or Colorit? Chances are you've seen these beautiful waterbrush pens and have either bought, or considered buying them. But which ones should you get?
Both are value priced, both can be replaced either via refills or open stock, and both have a bristle brush tip. The Colorit watercolor brush pens come with a nice canvas storage case; the Arteza Real Brush Pens come in 96 colors! The Colorits have refill bottles you can get with 15 refills per bottle! Hard choice.
Spoiler alert...in the end I really liked both; however, I leaned towards the ColorIt. I just liked the way it blended and performed better.
However, if you have the money and want premium waterbrush pens, then you may want to consider purchasing the Jane Davenport Mermaid Brush Markers. They're my favorite watercolor pen overall.

I just started playing with the Arteza and what I am finding is that blending is best on 100% cotton papers. The pulp based watercolor papers seem to not blend as readily

Hi Jennifer, My choice as someone who's still practicing the art of watercolor, will definitely be the Colorit's. 96 might sound great, but ..." Would one really use all those colors?" Shoot, some of us don't even use all of the Prisma's. LOL Plus, I would definitely be up to you doing another DIY.

Thank you for the comparison! Helpful to understand the difference. Have never tried any brush pens. My concern was also the sustainability factor. In Canada it is shocking to see how many pens all of use throw away each year (in Russia with simple old-fashioned pens we used to have extra inserts, although still lots of plastic but maybe a little less alltogether).

I have the 48 piece Arteza pens but I really am not happy with the points. They are really too thin and I find that I am often going out of the lines when I color. I have also found that they do not blend well with the water brushes. I also want to mention that I ordered a set of 4 water brushes from Arteza. I like the sizes of them but there really isn't any way to control the water flow other than very wet to flood! I have not used the blue one that came in the set. When I first ordered them, there were a couple of pens that had faulty points. I figured they would either send me the pens that were faulty or have me return the set and they would send me another. Instead, they sent me another set and did not need me to return the first set! Now I have 2 sets. Their customer service is fantastic!

    • @Msboochie2
      @Msboochie2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I had the same problem with some of the tips, but I just dealt with it. I should have contacted them. They don’t blend well with the water. The water brush that comes with the set is pretty good, just like the pentel water brushes. I also have the red Arteza brushes with the button, like you I don’t find that I have much control with the button. It floods the bristles with water. Still, I find myself using the color - it’s they blend very well with water and each other. I try the Arteza but I get frustrated because they don’t blend as well. I can only use them on watercolor paper, while the color it’s work on my mix media, card stock, and watercolor paper.

I've never used Color It, or Jane Davenport. I did feel like the greens on the Color It's were better at blending, but felt the reds were about the same. Good video. Thank you.
The colorits looked better all around to me. That 96 colors from Arteza must be a bribe. You know how we love MORE stuff! lol The Arteza's didn't look like they blended well. It's similar with the watercolor pencils yet the colored pencils are fine. O.o
I'd love to see you do a DIY. I was thinking of doing that myself with either the Hydrous or even shavings from the Inktense. I did make sprays with the inktense blocks so I don't see why they wouldn't work other than you'd have to shake them before use because the shavings don't all break down unless you use warmish water. But the Hydrous would work and those are watercolors. I think the inks would work too but they'll stain, won't they...so they might not do washes well. ? Do it so we can find out please?!

Thank you for this video. Over a year ago I bought myself the 48 pack of Arteza brush markers. Unfortunately the older version didn’t have the names on the barrel so I put them on my shelf and haven’t touched them until recently. If you know of how I can find out what the colors are so that I can properly swatch them that would be great.
I do like that the Colorit markers can be refilled. I own Copic markers and love being able to refill them. Thanks again for another great video!

I love using an acrylic paint pen to number my tools that don’t have names. You can buy a pack of paint pens pretty cheap (I got mine at Michael’s with multi colored paint so if the tool is black I use the white paint, if the tool is white, I use the black paint, etc) and I am having great luck with the paint not rubbing off. This is how I labeled and swatched the Castle Art watercolor brush pens. I hope this helps. Have fun.

Hi there, I really appreciate your videos, I like your calm and concise peaceful little corner of GREAT information. I recently purchase a kings ransom in watercolor pencils from 3 different higher end brands as well as 3 lower end less expensive brands only to come to the final conclusion that I don’t like using color pencils,,any of them. My 61 yr old hands do not like to work that hard and the “buttery feel” was NEVER all that buttery, and the water flow where I was really looking for the magic to happen has a serious learning curve which I ruined a lot of hard work from. Hugely expensive realization. I’m thinking that watercolor markers are more my patience, control, and “bliss” capacity. This is my new source of my color bliss information. See you again, Thank you! 🌈❤️🐽

I get they likely can't justify the coat of selling 1 replacement alone but like let me pick red, green, yellow, blue instead of 4 greens yano?

With the arteza pens you need to blend more with the pen itself in order to get a better variation in color. The water pen is really just to add water to the paper but honestly its easier just to dip the point of the pen itself in a little water. Also the 96 pen kit comes with a case 😊
