Transgender Homeless Woman Attacked Shows Staples in Her Head

  • I am unsure how much of Jolene's story is true. What I am sure of is she has been living outside, homeless in San Diego far too long. Jolene was also the nicest and most interesting person I met that day.
What first caught my attention was Jolene's shopping cart. You'll see it later on in the video. it's really ingenious how she made a shopping cart weather-protected to hold her belongings. We started to talk. Jolene shared that she is moving back to Texas because even as a homeless person, she cannot afford to live in San Diego.
Jolene is transgender. She started off the interview by telling me about how she was attacked by someone trying to rob her. Jolene shows us the metal staples in her head. It's dangerous being homeless! Someone commented that their surgical staples, and that Jolene couldn't have them removed at any time. I wish I had known in the moment because I would've asked her about it.
I normally don't post videos like this. Many channels do. Notice that we don't have ads on this video. I know when I was homeless and I told people that I was responsible for getting Wheel of Fortune in Jeopardy to TVs around the world, do you think anyone believed me? I decided to post this story because Jolene really impressed me with her ingenuity, it's important to show mental illness out on the streets in a way that educates the public instead of dehumanizing homeless people.
Jolene says she survives by the goodness of a few Christian friends and some strangers. While Jolene was showing me her cart, she mentioned that she's an artist, and I asked her to show us some of her art. Jolene is talented. Art and music help people work through trauma and give people purpose.
Some may watch this video or even may have met Jolene in San Diego and say she wants to be homeless, but the truth is, many homeless people adapt to life on the streets. It's called learned helplessness. The brain is extremely powerful. The brain has two choices. It's going to tell a homeless person that they are worthless and society hates them, or that they want to be homeless, and that it's their choice to live outside. Many homeless people tried to get out of homelessness, but after hitting the wall of bureaucracy over and over again, they just got used to life on the streets. They figure out how to survive. Jolene is very creative and very strong-willed. But her story is heartbreaking. I'm not talking about what she's telling us with her words. I'm talking about the story she's telling us with her face in her eyes. We need to prevent and solve homelessness for everyone. We need to make sure that people like Jolene don't end up out on the streets, and for those that do, there's a path to housing that's quick before they develop layers of trauma after being outside.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

What is wrong with the priorities of North Americans!!! Do they just want to buy overpriced cars loaded with unnecessary toys and tech gadgets? Do they just want to spend money in corporate junk food establishments? All of those corporations with drive up windows are letting people poison themselves. Anything for a buck!!! They use oils processed with hexane and use them so long! Many people are having heart attacks by age 50 from living on that junk!

And it’s not just about the price of rent which is astronomical it’s about the requirements. You have to make three times the rent, perfect credit, everytime you apply you have to pay a fee and you have to pay for your credit check each time. What happens every time someone runs your credit? It causes your credit score to go down right? No matter what they subtract points from your credit score. What happens if you apply to 5 different places? Your score goes down at the very least 25 points. Imagine 10 places? That’s 50 points gone off of your credit because you’re looking for a place to live? Wtf is going on here? How do we as a society accept that and think it’s okay? But we do.

I’ve been out there many times it changes your perspective when you become a homeless person I once thought they were all bad cause of what I was told growing up till I slept in a group with them every night and heard there stories those people watched out for me!! Gave me blankets and even there last dollar for food even though they needed it just as much they didn’t expect anything back, I was only 19 when I first went homeless and I’ve seen it all basically all of them did drugs but that didn’t make them bad people they were in a pain that not many could ever imagine.

Thank you for not shaming the homeless. Thank you for reminding people that this idea that because someone is homeless they are worthless is simply untrue. Yes some not all may consume alcohol or drugs. But I ask the average person this: if you were stripped of your family, possessions, career, friends and shelter what do you think you would do to cope? Not just with the emotional side but surviving the elements? It’s so easy to judge someone behind the window of your nice warm cozy house with your full belly family inside and a safe warm bed to sleep in. The circumstances change drastically when you no longer or have never had these things.

It’s a damn shame that when people knock you down and you reach a point where you don’t believe that you’re worthy of ever having your own home…
There is a “silent tragedy” within homelessness that goes beyond description, thought or emotion….
There’s a silver lining to hitting rock bottom…
You either see yourself as staying in rock bottom…or starting everything over from scratch….
You can let homelessness beat you down or you can use it to lift yourself back up and start over from scratch…
Homelessness was one of the BEST things that happened to me because it taught me that I am a SURVIVOR….and it gave me the strength to start over because when you have reached rock bottom, the only way to go is ⬆️ up.

@@InvisiblePeopleI'd say that one of the best ways to help homeless people, and all non- wealthy people in general,is something all of us can do- we can go to our local City Council meetings, and lobby those who are Council members to allow affordable housing to be built. Approval letters are needed,in order for this to happen. Tell these leaders that you won't stand for them enforcing status quo anymore, and they must get out of the way,and have proper use of empty and unused land and buildings. Los Angeles has these all over. Now, there's different categories of homeless people - people who are seniors, disabled, veterans,or working class renters, are not the same as mentally ill people,or addicted, or felons, and should not be lumped in together. Because people who need to be in facilities will require help long before they are able to rent anyway. But because of stereotypes, people think that all homeless people are dangerous.

When there are people dying, starving, being bought sold used traded then disposed of worse than livestock, the homelessness crisis that is taking place throughout our nation. There are so many other issues that directly impact the survival of human beings and we’re arguing over pronouns? Why aren’t people outraged that it’s 2024 and we’ve made all these technological advances and yet, no cure for cancer, aids or Alzheimer’s. There’s new diseases coming out left, right and center. And instead of us being outraged about that we want to know when the next cool social media app comes out that is going to blow up. We want to know more about A.I. (I’m not even going to get into the socioeconomic impact that’s going to have, that no one is worried or talking about). We’re consumed by content, followers and likes. What’s trending has become more important than our future as a nation. We should be demanding to know why they choose to keep us sick. We should be fighting for change. But instead we fight each other. All while they continue to line their pockets and laugh at us. We have to unite and fight for change.
