Just stumbled across this (a year and a half late!). I grew up in Oakdale and also lived in Merced. There were a lot of Portuguese in both places (don't forget Gustine!). Have a number of cousins who are part Portuguese and my best friend in high school was Portuguese. Can't imagine the Valley without them.

Don’t know much about the Portuguese culture. I know the were big explorers with sailing boats. Not sure 100% sure but the Portuguese Navy was well equipped and top dog in the 16 century because of their navy. I was First introduced Portuguese when I lived in Hawaii but not that much. Lately I’ve been looking to visit there after seeing a few TH-cam videos about it. Looks very similar to California to me.
