If you think Old and Wise is heartbreaking, try out their 'Shadow of A Lonely Man' from Pryamania, and Limelight, from Stereotomy. Shadow will break your heart. When you look up Limelight, you want the video with the black and white movie in it. It's a Charlie Chaplin movie, and it fits the song perfectly. I can't wait till they react to Shadow and Limelight.

People tend to overblow Alan Parsons importance on the "Project". I'd say Eric Woolfson was as paramount to the project as Parsons and I doubt their style would have been the same without him. This is particularly apparent when you listen to "Freudiana" which is still produced by Parsons and was at first planned to be another APP release, but none of the songs were written by him, and yet the album still sounds very much like an APP album.
And after Woolfson left the project, the music sounded different.

  • @theplanetruth

    I. LOVE. THIS. WHOLE. ALBUM!!!
As an 80s kid this was my FIRST true appreciation for a song as a work of art. I NEVER turn the station or skip this song when it plays.

Super band, super catalog. APP is amazingly theatrical, each song is like part of a play, and like a play they concentrate on mood and make the lyrics blend into the mood to create an overall feel and atmosphere. The solos are clean and only intensify the mood instead of standing out. They usually are in standard pop format with an A section, A B section, a break and a repeat of the A section but with additional sparks. But the pop is sprinkled with a prog sound and some cool unusual chords and rhythms.
    Quite genius, in fact.

What was so special was looking at the album cover or sleeve to discover the band members and instruments played, lyrics, recording engineer plus all the great artwork. Most did this while the music was playing and not until the end during the first listen. With this said, don’t change a thing. Love watching your reaction to the music of my life.😊

Quote from Wikipedia; In October 1967, at the age of 18, Parsons went to work as an assistant engineer at Abbey Road Studios. He was a tape operator during the Beatles' Get Back sessions, and he earned his first credit on the LP Abbey Road. He became a regular there, engineering such projects as Wings' Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway, five albums by the Hollies, and Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon, for which he received his first Grammy Awards nomination.

Love song that start with layering. Start with one simple instrument then bring in another and then another and another getting more and more sophisticated in composition but because of the layering you can still hear each of the instruments "wonderful" . An album of Alan Parsons i recommend to anyone who might like a to discover a AP gem that did get promoted here in New Zealand was " Vulture Culture " it has a deep red cover with a famous bronze sculpture of a Snake eating it own tall which is very apt for the album.

'Sirius', what the first track is named for, is the brightest star in the night sky, and the second "i" is not silent. The name is pronounced, 'see-ree-oos'. It comes from the Greek, 'Seirios', meaning, 'glowing', or, 'scorching'.

Good to see you have reacted to some of the APP staples such as this, Time, Old and Wise. Everyone has their favourites and hopefully you’ll get round to The Turn of a Friendly Card, Don’t Let It Show, Days are Numbers etc. APP fans all have their underrated favourites and my two would be The Shadow of a Lonely Man (sung by John Miles) and Limelight (sung by Gary Brooker). Parsons and Woolfson worked up the songs and then brought in guest singers such as Colin Blunstone, Steve Harley, Chris Rainbow et al, although they realised that in Woolfson himself they had an ideal interpreter for some of their output. Looking forward to seeing some more of your reactions to them.

Great intro guys. As far as sounding like Pink Floyd, it really only applies to their first 3 albums or so. By the time of "Eve" (1979), they started to go in a more pop, easy-listening direction, although "Turn of a Friendly Card" (1980) has an excellent progressive/classical suite on Side 2. Their last official APP album is "Gaudi" (1987) which sees them returning to a more progressive style.

So the “i” in Sirius is not silent and sounds just like serious. But check out the info below. Interesting story and there is a great song you might wasn’t to check out called Wishing On A Dog Star by Perry Farrell,Satellite Party. Great song with great lyrics.
Sirius, The God * Dog Star
The effect of Sirian energy and influences generated during 1993 / 1994 (the last cycle when Sirius A and B were closest), created renewed interest in this most influential heavenly body. The history books and religions of the world have had much to say about the God * Dog star. This article reflects on our ancestors' beliefs and inspired insights into a great mystery ~ the mystery of the Dog Star and its influences on our little corner of the universe.

Thank you for your great reaction! I saw Alan Parsons Project earlier this year for the first time and it was an amazing experience! I hope you will give your reaction to the concert in a future video. Sirius is definitely the introduction to Eye in the Sky and is one of the best openings to any album. Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls adopted this as their theme song in the 80's and 90's. Keep up the great work and have fun at the concert!

Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky and was very important to the ancient Egyptians…. They believed it was the home and Seat of their Gods. And the Eye in the Sky was the Eye of Horus. When you listen to the introductory deep synth at the opening of Sirius, think of that distant alien sun blazing hot blue in interstellar space… shining 100,000 times brighter than our own sun. I can almost see and feel the shimmering heat and radiance of it in the opening notes of the introduction. Then the almost serpentine weaving of the notes between the ascending and descending strings.

You need to listen to Tales of Mystery and Imagination from beginning to end. It's all based on Edgar Allen Poe stories. I love Alan Parsons, but his one is my absolutely favorite.

Sirius ("seer-ee-us" - from Greek "Seirios"), according to Homer, was the canine companion of Orion the Hunter in Greek mythology. Sirius is also the name of the brightest star in the Earth's night sky (the "Eye in the Sky"?) - the star lies near the foot of the constellation Orion.
The song is an excellent example of layering - with a consistent pattern over which are added layers of counter-melodies and harmonies - but which then peel away to leave a different pattern which sets up the following song. APP did this as the album opener on their first album with "A Dream Within A Dream" (less layers, but a spoken vocal is a significant layer) leading into "The Raven", again on I Robot which begins with the title song leading into "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You", on Pyramid with "Voyager" leading into "What Goes Up". "Eve" was the first album to break with the theme - while "Lucifer" is a layered instrumental, there is a clear division between it and "You Lie Down with Dogs". "The Turn of a Friendly Card" was the first APP album not to start with an instrumental, instead featuring a 16-minute multi-movement piece taking up almost the whole second side of the original LP. This^ album - "Eye In the Sky" - returns to the "instrumental leading into a vocal song as album opener" form, but it is again discarded and not returned to until the peri-Project album "Freudiana" (mostly an Eric Woolfson effort - most copies do not call it an Alan Parsons Project album, but Alan is featured, and did have some hand in the creation of the album.)
APP is a bit hard to do reactions to - almost every album is a concept album and loses a great deal if one doesn't listen to the whole album: both Parsons and Eric Woolfson had classical educations, and there are many references to Greek and Roman mythology, and not getting a reference can change the meaning of a song, which then affects the next song!
    ---------------------------------------------
You also mentioned King Crimson and DGM's zealous guardianship of their music. The best way I know to react to KC music "on-camera" is to react to one of the several "splinter" bands: Adrian Belew's Power Trio / Power Quartet plays a number of songs from his time in KC, and Tony Levin's Stick Men (Tony and Pat Mastelotto are both past and current members of KC) plays a number of KC tunes at their live performances that are well worth reacting to.

Eye in the Sky (1957) es una novela de Phillip K. Dick, escritor de ciencia ficción, al cual se deben obras tan magistrales como, Do Androids dream of Electronic Sheep? (1968) (Blade Runner en su adaptación para el cine), The Man in the High Castle (1962) o relatos como Minority Report (1956) llevado al cine por Steven Spielberg.
De Alan Parsons Project recomiendo su primer album, Tales of Mystery and Imagination
(1976) dedicado a Edgar Allan Poe. Aparte de ser ingeniero de sonido de Pink Floyd en Dark Side Of The Moon tambien lo fue en los albums The Beatles, Abbey Road y Let It Be
Saludos y me alegro de que ambos estéis bien.

Guys, the wonderful thing about the music you react to, for a 66-year-old veteran, is having lived it since it appeared, having heard it for the first time since the beatles with their evolution, until the 80s, which according to me, creativity disappeared a lot , except for rare exceptions , thank you for reminding me of those times !!!!!

Sirius is a world-famous intro at sporting events indoors. The lights are shut off, the music comes on, then the lights, and the starting line-ups are introduced. It was really common in the NBA.
